Only about 55% of people voted in the last US elections. True floating voters are increasingly rare. You don't have to assume that all non voters will vote a particular way to realise that sometimes elections can be won simply by getting out the vote.

Doesn't matter, they are happy to go along with the rest, you are still making an assumption that those that didnt vote would automatically vote for the dems..

Populists are good at energising their supporters. No populists ran for election in the UK in 2015.

UKIP would disagree, and the fact that Corbyn himself has said that he needs to take on a more populist approach kind of negates the argument.

Clinton did take the rust belt for granted, however she lost because of people who stayed at home or voted for third parties, not because of Trump's power to flip voters.

Again with the assumptions, there was a lot of Sanders voters who flipped to Trump, and those that voted for third parties need to be addressed, which comes back to self reflection, so my original point still stands

BaggypantsCrimplesnitch cheers, still not sure of the protocol here. Still thinking about it, there's a Samantha Bee one on it too, but the laughter even seems unkind. I wonder if it's a Section 25 thing.

How can a Pres who can't read do the job? And I love the stuff posted here, thanks everyone,Flowers
Justanotherlurker · 07/02/2017 20:03

Guess what. I don't HAVE to post balanced posts. I post what I want. If you want to counter with other side posts, feel free. I don't care. But don't dictate to me what I can and cannot post. I'm tired of you sniping at me.

I addressed your "american nazi-ism" and provided a poll, so....

It's an interesting paper on what Europeans think of Muslim immigration.

However, public perception and reality can often be very different.
That's where governments are supposed to lead. Based on evidence.
It's convenient for some to propagate a narrative that we should fear Muslims. Any Muslims. Or any others that are not like the majority. And blame those others as a group for whatever goes wrong.
We've seen it before and it doesn't end well.

GingerIvy · 07/02/2017 20:04

Poll? Pfffft. All polls are fake. Ask Trump.

And you feel free to address whatever you like. But stop bloody sniping that you want "balanced posts" from me. I don't have to post the way you want, and I sure as fuck don't need to post "balanced posts." So back off.

CussingQuim · 07/02/2017 20:05

Quite right Ginger. You are not the BBC. And what is 'balanced' anyway?

WE are all capable of reading to form an informed opinion Grin

woman12345 · 07/02/2017 20:10

Is there some type of irony that it could be Germany leading a fight against American nazi-ism

Absolutely agree Ginger
Germans are an absolute paragon of virtue in the effort the state has made to intelligently address Nazism. School kids are taught it, and of course, many English Jews are taking up Germany's offer of citizenship. There's AFD but compared to this country and US, it's a liberal, thoughtful nirvana. Except for the AFD, but at least they try.
The British invention of concentration camps, the Irish famine, the Highland clearances, the anti semitic pogrom in York in the 1200s is not taught or learnt about in England. Maybe if English people knew more of their history they wouldn't have made the choices they have.

Lweji · 07/02/2017 20:11

Is it more important to convert Trump supporters or to encourage the opposition?

I think it's definitely to engage people who are disillusioned with politics and politicians. Not necessarily that a great candidate will come along, but at least to make sure the wrong one doesn't get through, as it can easily happen.
Most people have been sleep walking.

amispartacus · 07/02/2017 20:11

t's a simple as John prangs his car because he's John and bad at corners; Jane prangs her car because she's a Woman Driver

Othering - the UK press is very good at this. Seeing a group as 'other', only using negative examples of 'other', rarely using the 'other' group in a positive sense, quoting statistics about 'other'. Posting negative things on MN about the 'other'.

People then say 'well, it's freedom of speech'. Which it is - but if the 'other' does not have a big platform and the group 'othering' has a massive platform, it does rather feed the narrative that the 'other' is a threat.

For 'other', insert any group 'you' have issues with.

It's Muslims, LGBT people, people on benefits, the poor, disabled people, immigrants, women

Funny - there's one group who have a massive platform and rarely get seen as 'other'. But they are the ones who say 'well it's freedom of speech' when people complain about what they say.

If you have a massive platform and you use that platform to constantly 'other' people and the 'other' group have a smaller platform, your freedom of speech is in danger of feeding and reinforcing public perceptions.

And that can be hard to see when you are not 'other'.

And if you are 'other' and you complain, raise objections and ask for a safe space - then the people with the big platform call you 'snowflake' or worse.

Sadly - we only get taught some of our history. Maybe we should be taught the darker sides of our history.

Ah hello again Lurker. Here to insult again but not offer anything yourself?

If you want to ignore my posts and make some ad hominem comment, carry on. If this thread is all about some patting everyone else on the back then just be honest about it..

Poll? Pfffft. All polls are fake. Ask Trump.

Ah, deflection, and yet you ridicule the trump supporters picking and choosing polls ...

Dont take it personally, Im a contrarian who really doesn't like Trump but your the one just spamming everything from your echo chamber, if you did actually look at the poll you would see it was in response to your "Germany combating American Nazi-ism" comment, maybe you need to wait a while until you someone on facebook offers a counter argument before you respond....

GrouchyKiwi · 07/02/2017 20:18

I agree with lurker that the Democrats lost the election mostly through their own doing: the shadiness over Clinton's nomination v Sanders; underestimating the disenfranchisement of rural middle America; and an assumption they were high and dry vs the idiot candidate put up by the Republicans. I think they - like Labour here - also underestimated how good the Republicans are at getting behind their candidate, even if they hate them. There weren't very many high-profile GOPs who were against him.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/02/2017 20:18

Sorry, that should have been "feeling of disenfranchisement".

lljkk · 07/02/2017 20:19

"Is it more important to convert Trump supporters or to encourage the opposition?"

it seems to be that swing/middle voters are the ones that need to be persuaded. They can't be described as supporters or opposition.

amispartacus · 07/02/2017 20:20

lurker

That poll:

All further migration from mainly Muslim countries should be stopped

So - the words 'migration, Muslim and stopped'.

Negative words.

How about

Refugees from war torn countries should continue to be admitted

I've had a look and can't find the full details of that survey. Were there any other questions?

A survey is only as good as the question asked. Ask the right question in the right way and you NUDGE people to the right answer.

That's why the Brexit question was worded carefully

Aggressive arse-hat?

Lweji · 07/02/2017 20:21

But GOP should also question how they ended up with Trump as their candidate. Great that they won the election, but is this the President and country they actually want?
They have also underestimated their own voters.
