t's a simple as John prangs his car because he's John and bad at corners; Jane prangs her car because she's a Woman Driver
Othering - the UK press is very good at this. Seeing a group as 'other', only using negative examples of 'other', rarely using the 'other' group in a positive sense, quoting statistics about 'other'. Posting negative things on MN about the 'other'.
People then say 'well, it's freedom of speech'. Which it is - but if the 'other' does not have a big platform and the group 'othering' has a massive platform, it does rather feed the narrative that the 'other' is a threat.
For 'other', insert any group 'you' have issues with.
It's Muslims, LGBT people, people on benefits, the poor, disabled people, immigrants, women
Funny - there's one group who have a massive platform and rarely get seen as 'other'. But they are the ones who say 'well it's freedom of speech' when people complain about what they say.
If you have a massive platform and you use that platform to constantly 'other' people and the 'other' group have a smaller platform, your freedom of speech is in danger of feeding and reinforcing public perceptions.
And that can be hard to see when you are not 'other'.
And if you are 'other' and you complain, raise objections and ask for a safe space - then the people with the big platform call you 'snowflake' or worse.
