There's a demonstration outside the Brooklyn Courthouse where ACLU solicitors are in court re this ban.

GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 01:37

He's forgetting one thing - The very same vehicle (twitter) that is letting him "connect with the people" is helping the people organise the demonstrations and solicitors and everything.

GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 01:37

Rumours flying that this is an actual government coup.

A Clemson professor got deported.

He's been living here for 7 years. He went to Tehran to visit his mother,, and when he got back, they escorted him off plane and sent him back. He has a job (professor), house, dog, car in airport carpark. He wasn't allowed to do anything about any of it, apparently.

Important clarification. This does not prevent Trump admin from blocking new travelers.

So who wants to be the one to tell Trump that there were more people at JFK airport tonight than there were at his inauguration?

Javid Zarif, foreign minister for Iran
Unlike the U.S., our decision is not retroactive. All with valid Iranian visa will be gladly welcomed. #MuslimBan 7/7

FreddoFrog · 29/01/2017 02:57

How does the US actually remove a sitting president? So if everyone finally decides enough is enough, how does Trump get removed?? (I'm an optimist Grin)

Also, someone (I think merry) upthread said that Obama said he'd intervene if the ban affected children born in the US. What powers does Obama have now?

Off to Google....

GingerIvy · 29/01/2017 03:06

He could be impeached or declared unfit for office,

mimishimmi · 29/01/2017 03:11

Look up the fall of the Plasco building in Tehran on 1.19.2017 Another job similar to 9/11. Iran is gojng to blame (probably correctly) the US and another ally in the Middle East...then declare war. Which is what the crazies are hoping for

Hopefully the Iranian government don't bite the bait and just blame it on the fire ..very nervous times for those of us from communities accused of being terrorists in the past. It's heartbreaking to see how this all works and how much collaboration there is.

FreddoFrog · 29/01/2017 03:12

Yes, thanks Gingerivy, so I'm reading. Impeachment (or assassination) seem to be the only way. It's incredible the breadth of the US president's powers when compared to, say, the UK or Australian PMs....

drivinmecrazy · 29/01/2017 03:31

We really need action rather tham rhetoric.
People are being stopped from free travel though rights at birth. Not so different to Nazi Germany.
I know it's not a popular comparison but why shy away from it.
It is what it is.
If you are currently a national fron a banned country, America currently has the right to treat you as hostile. An enemy of the state. Without any grounds, purely on the grounds of race.
Disgusting and unacceptable to the majority of the 'free world '

AcrossthePond55 · 29/01/2017 04:26

Freddo Obama has no actual 'power' per se in govt as a former President. But he could have enormous influence with the public and foreign leaders.

And removal from office by means of impeachment is only used on a sitting President for treason, bribery, or 'high crimes and misdemeanors'. The grounds for Bill Clinton's failed impeachment was the crime of 'lying to Congress'. Unfortunately unpopular policy will not be enough for Trump to be impeached. There must be some criminal or unconstitutional behaviour or action. And unfortunately Trump has a 'yuge' team of advisors and lawyers who will be sure that he stays on 'just this side' of the Constitution. Removal by unfitness for duty? He may be an unprincipled, greedy prick, but he's not insane.

No, unfortunately I think we're stuck with Madman Trump until 2020. Our only hope now is the 2018 midterms. We need a Democratic majority in the Senate and/or the House of Representatives. I can only hope that in 2018 there is a Democratic equivalent to the 'Republican Revolution' of 1994.

FreddoFrog · 29/01/2017 07:00

Thanks Acrossthepond, really helpful. The internets are giving me a (well overdue) crash course in US history & politics. Bloody interesting stuff (though obviously everything Trump related is horrifying).

FreddoFrog · 29/01/2017 07:11

Australian newspaper, The Age, has an interesting article re which countries the Donald has made the subject of the ban. The article says the ban does not include Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, UAE. Why? Because Trump has hotels/other business dealings there!
