or was Peter Kay homophobic on Strictly?

His bit with Rinder made me cringe so hard.

That kind of 'humour' based on the idea that gay men are predatory sex pests belongs in the 70's with Alf Garnett type sitcoms rather than 2016 doesn't it? Felt dated, lazy and really awkward.

Not that I expect Peter Kay to be at the cutting edge of comedy of course but still.

Just me?

Hmmm, no not just you. Not sure I'd go as far as homophobic, but certainly a 'the 70's called and they want their 'hilarious' gay joke back'. Disappointing as PK may not be cutting edge but I've never seen him as a complete tit before. The lovely judge was generous, but then again, what was he supposed to do?

Peanutbutterfingers · 19/11/2016 22:57

Yes! I found it really uncomfortable, dated and unnecessary

ThisPasadenaHomemaker · 19/11/2016 22:58

I love Rinder and just felt exasperated on his behalf.

And I have a soft spot for PK, Phoenix Nights is a favourite of mine.

Disappointing to say the least.

Why what did he say?

Isitjustmeorisiteveryoneelse · 19/11/2016 23:02

Sort of expecting something in the papers tomorrow about it and poor Rinder will have to say something like 'no it was fine, wasn't offended etc etc' . Actually OP now you've mentioned it, the more depressing I'm finding it.

DearMrDilkington · 19/11/2016 23:04

What did he say?!Shock

ShatnersBassoon · 19/11/2016 23:04

He's a great observational comedian, but I don't think he's any good at off the cuff humour. He went for a cheap laugh and it was embarrassing.

ShatnersBassoon · 19/11/2016 23:06

He did the old fake jump pretending to have been pinched on the arse by Judge Rinder, then made some jumbled joke about being a 'closed case' ie not available for gay sex Hmm

Duchess and Dear.

50 second mark onwards.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 19/11/2016 23:13

Ugh, PK's humour is so not relevant anymore and there's only so long he can peddle out 15 year old catchphrases before they become seriously unfunny.

FranHastings · 19/11/2016 23:14

I thought it was unnecessary and offensive too. I thought Rinder looked really uncomfortable and felt sorry for him.

Mind you, if you look at twitter, he's being praised as some sort of hilarious comedy god. Bantz, innit. Hmm

ThisPasadenaHomemaker · 19/11/2016 23:16

I get that Cherry. I guess I expect it from him but expect better from Strictly?

Surely he wasn't ad-libbing so someone okayed his content? Am embarrassed for Claudia for being in such hysterics too.

I just expect better all round I guess.

DearMrDilkington · 19/11/2016 23:18

Oh what an absolute twat. Completely un-called for. I hope he gets in trouble for it.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 19/11/2016 23:18

I reckon that was ad libbed, it was deeply unfunny, I love Judge Rinder too he was a very good sport about it Sad

ShatnersBassoon · 19/11/2016 23:20

I don't think it was scripted. It wouldn't have been so horrible if anyone had had time to think up something funny.

I don't think Claudia particularly got the gist of it and was just laughing because that was the comedy skit, so that's the cue for the presenter to piss their pants laughing while trying to listen to your earpiece and check what you need to say next.

Chippednailvarnish · 19/11/2016 23:21

Peter Kay and his dickhead friend Paddy come across as a bunch of smug 1970's throwbacks.

furlinedsheepskinjacket · 19/11/2016 23:24

dated lazy awkward ? surely that just sums up pk's humour ?

phoenix nights was a lonnnnnnng time ago

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 19/11/2016 23:25

Ugh don't get me started on Paddy McGuiness. I remember reading an interview not that long ago, although back in page 3 days, where the interviewer said "you look glum Paddy" and his response was "i am, the page 3 girl in this morning's paper had tiny tits, it's just not right" Hmm cunt

Soozikinzii · 19/11/2016 23:30

I thought that as well and I really like PK love the car share stuff but why do that ? Felt embarrassed and thought judge came out of it well taking the joke

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 19/11/2016 23:33

I feel really, really old.

VoodooPeople · 19/11/2016 23:33

Between his accent and the poor sound quality on the video I couldn't understand a word he was saying so I'm none the wiser. The 'pretend bum pinch' was rather childish but PK has always been like one of his Phoenix Nights characters.

Livelovebehappy · 19/11/2016 23:34

Definition of homophobia: 'dislike or prejudice against homosexual people'. So no, I don't think PK appeared to dislike or show prejudice towards Judge Rinder, but maybe he behaved a bit inappropriately. Think the choice of words for the subject heading of this thread is a bit OTT, but I agree it was a bit like going back to the 70's type of comedy, and was done for cheap laughs.

StrictlyPan · 19/11/2016 23:37

Agree Livelove - it was fairly cringey and RR ddn't seemed piqued by it. Unfortunate and pretty embarrassing - stereo-typing a thick uncultured northerner is as upsetting!

VoodooPeople · 19/11/2016 23:40

Off topic, but I was listening to Radio One the other day and was delighted to hear that Judge Rinder and Benedict Cumberbatch are really good friends. Apparently he was BC's best man and they've known each other since Uni.
