His bit with Rinder made me cringe so hard.

That kind of 'humour' based on the idea that gay men are predatory sex pests belongs in the 70's with Alf Garnett type sitcoms rather than 2016 doesn't it? Felt dated, lazy and really awkward.

Not that I expect Peter Kay to be at the cutting edge of comedy of course but still.

Just me?

Are people seriously using the defence 'if it happened on a light entertainment show in the 1970s it's fine ' Grin

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2016 15:23

Yep "If Eric Morecambe did something completely different 40 y ars ago, then of course it's OK for Strictly to perpetuate gay stereotypes and endorse homophobic humour now"

It's a bloody shame, actually. One of the first light entertainment programmed to have, totally without comment, 2 women presenters who make jokes and have a relationship without male mediation, then they do this.

ClaudiaWankleman · 20/11/2016 15:30

I was really disappointed in Claudia to see her laugh so much.

FRETGNIKCUF · 20/11/2016 15:31

Now someone is saying the joke is based on anal sex???

Ha ha ha ha. Literally dying.

SapphireStrange · 20/11/2016 15:35

YANBU. It was homophobic and retrogressive.

I agree with those saying it would have been fine if the joke had been that one of the women was pinching his arse.

Even if he didn't mean it to be homophobic and was 'picking on' the nearest person to him, it was ill-thought-out.

In Claudia's defence, I thought she was laughing not so much at that per se but more out of exruciation that he was mucking up the Ts and Cs.

ClaudiaWankleman · 20/11/2016 15:39

Katy07 He makes me and gives gay men a bad name

He shames all gay men by being excitable, enthusiastic and entertaining? Who gives a shit if he's camp while doing it? Men are not valued based on their adherence to masculine tropes.

BakeOffBiscuits · 20/11/2016 15:43

Fret Iirc it was based on anal sex (I can't be bothered to watch the whole thing again). He said something along the lines of "it's all closed up behind there" or something like that.

Amalfimamma · 20/11/2016 15:43

I do feel some people need to ask for a sense of humour for Christmas.

Ffs lighten up girls. It was a joke, no need to be all pearl grabbing and offended!

SapphireStrange · 20/11/2016 15:46

Amalfi, my sense of humour is present and correct, thanks very much.

It's just not based on 1973.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 20/11/2016 15:53

It didn't come across as homophobic to me. I just thought when he said 'Case closed it was a reference to Judge being a Lawyer, nothing else.

limitedperiodonly · 20/11/2016 16:01

Painfully unfunny and Robert Rinder was smiling because there wasn't much else he could do unless he wants to be called a sensitive queen.

Ages ago I watched someone on a game show hosted by Julian Clary to the same unfunny thing. Julian ripped him to shreds along the lines of 'why would an attractive man like me want a fat fuck like you?' Wish that had happened.

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2016 16:08

Practically a full house......Grin

happypoobum · 20/11/2016 16:11

I thought it was in very poor taste. I also felt like I had been transported back to the seventies and we would have the black and white minstrels on stage next......

TiggyD · 20/11/2016 16:12

The key thing is whether Gay/Bi men find it offensive.

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2016 16:14

"I just thought when he said 'Case closed it was a reference to Judge being a Lawyer, nothing else."

OK. A man pretends to have his bottom pinched by an openly gay man, who has said nothing. He then says "Steady! This case is firmly closed!"

And you thought it was simply a reference to the openly gay man being a lawyer? You know what? I don't believe you.

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 20/11/2016 16:28

The key thing is whether Gay/Bi men find it offensive

Why is it only gay people can be offended by homophobia?

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 20/11/2016 16:29

"And you thought it was simply a reference to the openly gay man being a lawyer? You know what? I don't believe you

Hmm

It's going to come as no surprise that I don't care whether you believe me or not.

As yet, I haven't read anywhere that Judge Rinder himself was actually offended. So until he does it looks like people are getting offended on his behalf.

Fwiw I saw no reason for PK to be there at all. Just get on with the bloody dancing!

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 20/11/2016 16:31

IMO Rinder looked so uncomfortable, that sort of cheshire cat grin & fake-laugh you see women do all the time when some jackass makes an inappropriate comment but they don't feel they can say anything.

Or when your moron boss cracks a "joke" that is categorically not funny but you laugh anyway because other wise you look like a miserable asshole.

BertrandRussell · 20/11/2016 16:32

Well, not being believed is much better than the alternative explanation!

SapphireStrange · 20/11/2016 16:33

Spot on, Lulu.

And I think, regardless of whether you find it offensive or not, the 'This case is firmly closed' 'joke' was clearly homophobic.

limitedperiodonly · 20/11/2016 16:43

The key thing is whether Gay/Bi men find it offensive

Why? I'm a straight woman. I sometimes disagree with the views of other women, straight, gay or bi. Whose views are men - straight, gay or bi - supposed to side with? I'd prefer them to have their own opinions and let me have mine.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 20/11/2016 17:06

Whatever Bertrand Hmm it was my take on it.

I think an intelligent man like Judge is, had he actually been offended, would've shut PK up right there and then.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 20/11/2016 17:08

The key thing is whether Gay/Bi men find it offensive

I think the key thing is was JUDGE offended? The joke was directed at him after all.

Katy07 · 20/11/2016 17:14

Case closed = Judge
Well you can make your sarky comments at me on that too Bertrand but I assumed that's what the link was too. He's 'Judge' Rinder. It's not an unreasonable assumption. And not all of us try to force a 'oh my god I'm so offended' meaning into everything we see or hear. Try taking things at face value and you might not sound quite such a twat.

SapphireStrange · 20/11/2016 17:16

I think he did look offended –well, certainly uncomfortable and as if he was straining to remain looking pleasant.

It was very uncomfortable to watch.
