His bit with Rinder made me cringe so hard.

That kind of 'humour' based on the idea that gay men are predatory sex pests belongs in the 70's with Alf Garnett type sitcoms rather than 2016 doesn't it? Felt dated, lazy and really awkward.

Not that I expect Peter Kay to be at the cutting edge of comedy of course but still.

Just me?

"I don't think it's homophobic
or about anal sex"

"This case is closed" - SAID BECAUSE HE IS A JUDGE

Peter Kay jumping away in horror -because Judge Rinder happens to be standing behind PK and OH NO! JR IS GAY!!

"This case is closed"
The case = PK's bum
It's closed because... He doesn't want JR's willy up it.

THE ''JOKE' WOULDN'T WORK ON ANYONE ELSE BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT CALLED JUDGE

THE 'JOKE' WOULDN'T WORK WITH A WOMAN BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE WILLIES

THE 'JOKE' WOULDN'T WORK WITH A STRAIGHT MAN AS THEY DON'T WANT THIER WILLIES UP PETER KAYS BUM

The whole joke is about a gay mans willy pestering a straight mans bum!!

DramaInPyjamas · 21/11/2016 15:07

I think I explained that in simple enough terms to understand Grin

The joke isn't even funny - case closed!

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 21/11/2016 15:11

Drama Bravo - I think that was simply enough put Wink

5to2 · 21/11/2016 16:18

His whole act is remembering space hoppers, Arctic Roll, flare jeans and other 70s references

No it isn't. And he isn't an "act", he's an excellent comedy actor and writer as well as stand-up comedian.

Also he is 2 years older than me and would be 7 in 1980. A lot of the references are 80s, not 70s.

I think he got it badly wrong here, but imagine the intent was self-deprecation, to acknowledge he'd not be attractive to a man. I've never seen any evidence of homophobia in his performances or writing until now.

Some people seem to be equating him with Bernard Manning or Jim Davidson. FFS, get a grip.

Owllady · 21/11/2016 16:35

Peter Kay has let himself down. I'd go as far as to say he's ruined Christmas

FRETGNIKCUF · 21/11/2016 16:41

It was not anal sex....

fucking hell, how old are you people? It's a standard classic Morcombe and Wise "ooo someone pinched my bum" joke, not get this gay man's cock out of my arse. And "case closed" is because PK's character is not interested in the person pinching his arse.

I definitely think the offence here is very much in mind of the beholder.

StrictlyPan · 21/11/2016 16:49

I'm not sure which is worse now. Donald Trump or Peter Kay.Sad

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 21/11/2016 18:52

Fret Which I'd then put the question to you again - why move Claudia out of the way so that the "bum pincher" was the gay man? Why not just play out his little "joke" with a woman instead?

DramaInPyjamas · 21/11/2016 20:33

If he's "an excellent comedy writer" then why is he resorting to cheap laughs from a 40yr old, not-even-that-funny-in-the-first-place, Morecambe & Wise gag ?

His best stuff was equally co-written with Dave Spikey & Neil Fitzmaurice, which he later claimed all the credit for.

BertrandRussell · 21/11/2016 21:01

I do!mt think Morecambe and Wise would have done the "case is firmly closed" line......

SapphireStrange · 22/11/2016 11:52

Bert, I agree, definitely not. When they did it the joke was always on Eric. Which is why he was funny and endearing, and Peter Kay is a boorish homophobe.

TaraCarter · 22/11/2016 13:32

FRET Step back a minute. You have a good number of people telling you that "case" stands for anal sphincter. In my case, this is because I have encountered enough "jokes" about clenching arseholes in the presence of openly gay men. I imagine the others here have too. How likely is it that all of us are making up these common cultural references that have apparently passed you by, and you're the only one seeing the joke in its intended light?

How likely is it that a professional comedian wouldn't know he was making a joke that would translate to "my arsehole is closed" to most viewers over 14?

I expect PK would have his head in his hands at this thread.

FRETGNIKCUF · 22/11/2016 14:13

Case? Means sphincter?

No one has said that. They said that this case is closed was a homophobic thing but not that case is a specific word for that. Hmmm..... oh fuck. Well if it's a known word for anal sphincter then I guess this is very poorly judged.

TaraCarter · 22/11/2016 14:20

No, not that "case" generally means sphincter! In this context, together with "closed", he's saying his arsehole is clenched.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2016 14:23

I've left this thread because the only possible explanations are that either FRET is Peter Kay's mother or she's on a wind up. I suggest nobody else wastes their time.

FRETGNIKCUF · 22/11/2016 14:25

Bert. No need to take a difference of opinion so personally. I genuinely don't think he's a homophobe that's all.

PaddingtonLoverOfMarmalade · 22/11/2016 14:25

To me it seemed unfunny, outdated and inappropriate. It will put me off watching him in future.

TaraCarter · 22/11/2016 14:28

FRET Whether he is homophobic or not is an entirely different question. It is perfectly possible he intended the joke to be on him. It's still a joke about being scared RR is going to shag him.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2016 15:08

FRET. You are of course, entitled to your own opinions. You are not entitled to your own facts!

The joke was homophobic.
Peter Kay may or may not be homophobic- but if he isn't, why would he tell a homophobic joke?

Tropezienne · 22/11/2016 16:00

Cheap laugh but not homophobic IMO.

Datun · 22/11/2016 16:32

There's a bit of a leap from pretending someone has pinched your bum to implying that all gay men are uncontrollably promiscuous. I don't think when ErIc Morecombe did it to Glenda Jackson he was implying that all women were nymphomaniacs.

SapphireStrange · 22/11/2016 16:38

No indeed, Datun, the point is that the joke was on Eric for thinking that a gorgeous individual would be interested in dweeby him.

The jokes aren't comparable; in this case the joke was on Judge Rinder for being gay and therefore apparently unable to control himself when another man was standing in front of him.

BertrandRussell · 22/11/2016 17:11

Datun. Why is "Steady- this case is firmly closed" a joke if it's nothing to do with Robert Rinder being gay?

Datun · 22/11/2016 19:11

I don't know. A euphemism? I still don't see how it is homophobic. Presumably the homophobic part is implying that all gay men are promiscuous?
