His bit with Rinder made me cringe so hard.

That kind of 'humour' based on the idea that gay men are predatory sex pests belongs in the 70's with Alf Garnett type sitcoms rather than 2016 doesn't it? Felt dated, lazy and really awkward.

Not that I expect Peter Kay to be at the cutting edge of comedy of course but still.

Just me?

He's laughing at himself FGS! He's a big blob from Bolton and JR. is a handsome man who plays it camp constantly! JR didn't look embarrassed at all! He got the joke!

Etak15 · 20/11/2016 10:11

I thought Peter was 'in character', judge rinder didn't look uncomfortable - come on he should be able to take a joke - his whole show is about looking down on and taking the piss out of people!

TiggyD · 20/11/2016 10:15

Has PK tweeted about how many gay friends he has, or how JR took it in good humour yet?

SatsukiKusakabe · 20/11/2016 10:15

No, it means it wasn't a successful joke. But it was definitely intended as a joke.

I wasn't explaining why it was funny btw (I said I didn't find it so) I was explaining why it didn't equal Peter Kay himself being homophobic.

Hth.

DramaInPyjamas · 20/11/2016 10:15

"Do you actually know Pete in real life? Where do you get your information from?"

No but I do know two separate production staff who worked on two of his shows and they have say he's an absolute arsehole.

Coupled with the fact that he always appears on the MN 'arsehole celebrity ' threads
...and that he publicly fell out with his oldest friends and colleagues after believing his own hype and taking all the creative credits on the shows, I can safely say that in my opinion, I think he's an arsehole Grin

I actually do like the shows Phoenix Nights and Max & Paddy

But to those saying that it's fine because it's a character he was playing, Roy Chubby Brown is a character too, doesn't mean he is funny or inoffensive

OutragedKoala · 20/11/2016 10:16

It was a joke. Not funny, but not offensive. You all need to get a grip of yourselves. Homosexuals certainly do not require you all to be outraged on their behalf so simmer down

Livelovebehappy · 20/11/2016 10:17

Look at the innuendos made every week on the judging panel. Len quite often makes comments about Bruno and Craig, but I guess it all comes back to the fact that PK is a northerner, and therefore must be uneducated and ill informed about these things, whereas the judging panel are obviously just being entertaining. If people are going to hysterically scream 'homophobia' at this, then at least be consistent.

TheNaze73 · 20/11/2016 10:21

With the exception of Phoenix Nights, he has never made me laugh.

The comment last night was cringy

DoneAndDustednow · 20/11/2016 10:22

I'm gay and I thought it was funny Confused

Just Peter Kay humour. Loads of similar in Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy.

SleepFreeZone · 20/11/2016 10:23

I thought it was funny!

MrsJayy · 20/11/2016 10:24

It was gawd awful really inappropriate I had to fast forward him
Claudia was doing polite hysteria and everyone else just looked embarrassed

SatsukiKusakabe · 20/11/2016 10:24

Being 'in character' does not mean the joke was funny or inoffensive just that a character acting in a homophobic manner is not the same thing as Peter Kay acting in a homophobic manner.

MrsJayy · 20/11/2016 10:25

It wasn't homophobic though (pressed to soon) just really cringy

If the joke wasn't funny the idea that Robert Rinder needs mumsnet to be offended on his behalf is hilarious! I thought my crazy mother was the only person with a stick far enough up her backside to be offended by Peter Kay. Turns out I've found her (similarly humourless) people.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/11/2016 10:30

hm I think it IS homophobic because it perpetuates the myth that all gay men fancy ALL men and are sexually predatory verging on abusive - Judge Rinder see's PK standing next to him and obviously can't control his urges Hmm

it's outdated and harmful

DramaInPyjamas · 20/11/2016 10:32

Frankie Boyle is offensive, some may say unfunny - but he is also a really nice person in real life (yes, I do know him personally before I am questioned Grin)

So you could argue that he is a character since there seems to be two very different sides to him..?
And that it's ok for him to joke about things that take offence because he is a character..?

Geretrude · 20/11/2016 10:34

Even if it were in character, I can't imagine JR found it hilarious. The boys in my class used to push their chairs against the walls when we were taught by a gay teacher. I'm sure they would have said it was a joke. It still wasn't funny

Sallystyle · 20/11/2016 10:35

He's laughing at himself. Judge seemed to find it funny.

Not seeing homophobia here at all.

BakeOffBiscuits · 20/11/2016 10:52

Judge Rinder didn't really have any choice but to find it funny though did he? He couldn't exactly say anything and that's what made me very uncomfortable.

JR had his sexuality made fun of and he didn't give permission for that, he's a contestant who has to watch what he says. So he sort of had to find it funny. Craig and Bruno have lots of opportunities to answer back of someone takes the piss.

And I think Claudia knelt down because she was embarrassed by his remarks.

I will add I find PKs striped TV very funny, but in unscripted stuff he's just self indulgent and boorish. and I know people who know him in RL and he's a miserable, moody sod

MrsJayy · 20/11/2016 10:58

I usually like Peter Kay his stand up Is funny but just found him really cringy last night

Time for the massed ranks of the Professionally Unoffended to rally to the defense of the indefensible...........

Time for the massed ranks of the Professionally Unoffended to rally to the defense of the indefensible

Alternatively, time for the massed ranks of the PO to rally

It was a bad joke, poorly delivered. I'm embarrassed for PK but I'm sure I'll get over it.

Wishfulmakeupping · 20/11/2016 11:14

Went for a cheap laugh :(
He was brilliant when he started I loved his early stuff been going downhill for years now

DoneAndDustednow · 20/11/2016 11:26

How did he have his sexuality made fun of??

If it was a woman it would have been funny because a glamorous woman pinching a tubby blokes arse is unbelievable.

If it were a straight handsome guy the joke would have been this tubby guy is irresistible to even straight blokes.

So it's all funny unless the guys gay?

So you can't joke about with gay men?

I'm a lesbian and I thought it was funny and laughed just as I would in any of the above scenarios.
