Just thinking about it: can you imagine being the butler/maitre d/housekeeper/chamber maid etc at the White House and facing your employers changing from the Obamas to Don and Mel? I really do think they will have trouble hanging on to the domestic staff over the next few months Grin

I have a lot of respect for Michelle Obama but I don't think we should hold her up as a feminist role model. She was Barack's mentor early in their law careers but he got to be president and make important decisions and she has some campaigns and wears nice clothes. Her campaigns are worthwhile but it's not like being the actual president or Secretary of State or anything, is it?

I firmly believe that's because Michelle probably knew full well that being the first Black President would be one hell of a difficult thing to achieve. As would being the first Woman President. So to try to be both in one go would be beyond even her. She was canny enough to let her Husband break that first taboo. I still believe she may just break the second and become the first Woman president.

I too have read that Melania plans to tackle Cyberbullying (whilst being married to a man who has done more than his fair share of it during his campaign, the irony!)

Which is weird, because the other well known name I've heard recently linked to a campaign to end Cyberbullying is none other than Monica Lewinsky. She was conspicuously silent during the campaign, I'm sure Trump would have LOVED to have her onboard to talk about HCs character assassination of her.

please no. She is great and all but surely the white house isn't just a revolving door for certain families? There is another equally qualified, wonderful, inspirational black woman out there who could run.

And there is zero evidence Michelle Obama every had any interest in being president. or even a politician at all. Why do people presume that because her husband wanted to be a politician, she does too? She wanted to be a lawyer and a corporate executive and that is what she did - until she had to take on the role of FLOTUS. I will look on her future career with interest. I think she could end up doing many amazing things. None of which will involve elected office.

Un Because the internet and media would rake her over hot coals if she ever made a peep again. That woman was treated so maliciously, and has been by a lot of people ever since. I don't blame her for staying silent.

Very true and well said. I think because she gave some inspirational speeches, people want to see more of her. But I'm sure she wants to get the fuck out of there for a good long while too.

True, except she hasn't stayed silent, she has been speaking out about Cyberbullying - take this excellent TED talk for example:
Monica Lewinsky TED Talk

Which is why I was surprised that the Trump campaign didn't have her on board along with the other group of women who accused Bill Clinton of assault. I bet they tried to get her involved and failed.

But good luck to Melania and her cyberbullying campaign.

Pluto30 · 13/11/2016 22:36

How much are you willing to bet, Un? Seems like a strange and pointless comment to make. You can't know that they tried to contact her.

Good for her with the cyber-bullying thing, and Melania too, if that's the route she goes down. I will watch the TED talk later.

No indeed I can't. But of all the strange and pointless comments to make, me speculating that the Trump campaign likely tried to get ML on board is hardly the most preposterous idea, given that she's still a household name and someone who could have seriously damaged HCs campaign.

But no, I won't be betting actual money on it because it was just a turn of phrase! But whatever, as you were!

Sorry I meant of all the strange and pointless comments on this thread

HeddaGarbled · 13/11/2016 23:37

Trump's supporters ran an ad saying "Hilary sucks, but not as well as Monica" so I don't think there was any chance she was going to support that campaign.
