To not let my 13 year old get Pokemon go

NevergetanameIlike · 14/07/2016 22:23

AIBU to not let my daughter who is 13 get Pokemon go because I think it's pointless and a waste of time and people are being ridiculed for playing it.

It just seems like a silly fad that will blow over.

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 14/07/2016 22:24

Why would you? It's perfectly harmless and good fun.

HermioneJeanGranger · 14/07/2016 22:25

YABVU. It's harmless and fun.

Don't be a spoilsport.

Mirandawest · 14/07/2016 22:25

I think YABU. Lots of things are fads and 13 year olds like to be part of fads. My 12 year old got it today - I wouldn't have thought of saying he couldn't.

Whathaveilost · 14/07/2016 22:25

You are being a bit odd TBH.

Redglitter · 14/07/2016 22:25

YABU it's a phase. What's the harm in it
.If all her pals have got it why wouldn't you let her have it. If nothing else it's getting people outdoors. Lots of phases and crazes at that age appear stupid to adults. Let her have a bit of fun

StarMirror · 14/07/2016 22:25

It's just a game, lighten up. She's 13 and it's the school holidays, who cares if it's a waste of time and a silly fad.

Mummyme1987 · 14/07/2016 22:26

I'm hoping it will encourage mine to get out more

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 14/07/2016 22:26

Well aren't you a delightful little spring flower.

You could argue that most activities done for fun, rest or relaxation are pointless. People get ridiculed for train spotting, wearing the wrong trainers or having a wonky nose. That is because some people are arseholes.

SaucyJack · 14/07/2016 22:27

Weird post. Have I missed the intended joke OP?

MuddlingMackem · 14/07/2016 22:27

I told my DS that he could have it on his phone for the summer. He spends too much time looking at screens but thought at least this would get him some exercise whilst looking at the screen. Then I looked up info and discovered that his phone doesn't have a new enough operating system to run it. He's not a happy bunny.

AShadowLurkingInTheShadows · 14/07/2016 22:27

ybu. "it's pointless and a waste of time" if you call getting out of the house walking and getting exercise with your friends, socialising and having fun pointless and a waste of time than I feel sorry for you.

titchy · 14/07/2016 22:27

What's the fact that YOU think it's pointless got to do with it, or is she asking you to play it with her?

Of course it's a fad. Do you still listen to the music you listened to at 13? Wasn't that a fad? In fact isn't everything 13 yo like a fad by definition?

LouBlue1507 · 14/07/2016 22:28

It encouraged me to waddle walk over 10km yesterday, 9 months pregnant and I never walk anywhere! 😅 It's great!

OhStacey · 14/07/2016 22:28

Weird. Perfect game for summer as you have to walk or bike between sites.

noblegiraffe · 14/07/2016 22:28

You think it's pointless and a waste of time so she doesn't get to play it?

Killjoy.

squoosh · 14/07/2016 22:28

Bah humbug to you too OP!

So what if it's fad that will blow over? Fads can be fun and fun isn't a waste of time.

Nogravyforyou · 14/07/2016 22:29

YABU ( first time saying that on here!) it is great fun. I'm a CM and myself and my two charges have had great fun the last two days tracking different Pokemon. I'm also combining it with teaching about maps and directions. Have seen loads of teenagers in little groups doing it, and some have even helped me and the littlies which is think is lovely.
I'm sure the hype will all calm down completely but I don't think it will take away from the fun that you can get spending a few hours Pokemon hunting!

MoonriseKingdom · 14/07/2016 22:30

Pointless - surely the point is to have fun!
Ridiculed - I would've surprised if your 13 yr old was ridiculed given most of her friends are probably playing it.
Most kids enjoy some fad. My brother spent hours of his (1990s) childhood comparing football stickers with his mates.
It's not my cup of tea but can't see why you would stop your teenager playing it. It's hardly Call of Duty!

Sallystyle · 14/07/2016 22:30

My relative just said the same on FB.

Are you her?

Said it's the last thing she wants her child to play on as it encourages them to go too far. My 17 year old walked a few miles playing it and he is really lazy.

You sound fun.

DS has just downloaded it. Am hoping it'll get him out and walking.

UnikittyInHerBusinessSuit · 14/07/2016 22:34

There are some reasons not to let your child do this, but "it's a fad" is not one of them. Did you spend your teens in a coma OP? Because you seem to have missed out on some key parts of the teen experience.

Everything fun is usually pointless. That's why it's fun!

You're being a misery guts.
