To not let my 13 year old get Pokemon go

NevergetanameIlike · 14/07/2016 22:23

AIBU to not let my daughter who is 13 get Pokemon go because I think it's pointless and a waste of time and people are being ridiculed for playing it.

It just seems like a silly fad that will blow over.

Thank you Rhi- I'll try again later!

"Also, today I read about paedophiles using the Pokie Stops to meet kids." Where did you read this?

ABunchOfCups · 17/07/2016 20:11

I just posted on the other Pokemon thread about a young girl (15) who works in a local shop telling me how a man approached her and her friends at the local pokestop, they thought he was just playing the game until he started making sexual comments and trying to grab one of the girls breasts, a passing Mum fended him off by hitting him with her shoes and he ran off called police.

Wether this man deliberately targeted the stop I don't know but it must have been frightening for the girls, you'd think this stuff wouldn't happen in broad daylight. It's the closest stop to our home and I was thinking of letting dd (11) walk to it herself but that and the drunk man shouting at the same one as we passed a few days ago I'm not so sure now.

ABunchOfCups · 17/07/2016 20:18

Meant to add that we've passed and chatted to many many more nice friendly people while being out playing this game, but it's a shame there are some twats out there, the girl I was talking to said she will still go out with her friends to the stops but will be looking over her shoulder and leave if she sees a man approaching the stop in future and only set lures off if there's a few families with adults there.

YABVU My kids barely leave their rooms. All of a sudden they want to come out for family walks. It's a phase, but it's great fun; I've got it on my phone on the spirit of competition Wink

SauvignonBlanche · 17/07/2016 20:47

I'm loving it. DD has just persuaded DH to take her and the dog out and I'm drinking Wine in peace. Grin

Br4duck · 19/07/2016 18:19

First of all the game is free, so when the "fad" is over she can just delete it. Also, who cares if people get ridiculed!!!

Br4duck · 19/07/2016 18:20

My mum also encourages me to play "I'm twelve" as I rarely leave my room and she says it helps us connect as a family

RoseGoldHippie · 19/07/2016 22:35

It's certainly encouraged my and my partner to get out more! Ha 😜

NurseRoscoe · 21/08/2016 09:37

I love pokemon go! it's encouraged my 3 year old who has hypermobilitiy and dyspraxia to walk more rather than moaning to be carried or go in the buggy as it distracts him, it's doing wonders for him! let your daughter join in the fun, it's not costing any money, it's not encouraging her to talk to strangers or do anything dangerous, it's harmless!

lionsleepstonight · 21/08/2016 09:51

Isn't everything a 13 year old likes a fad and a waste of time?

Lighten up, it's only going to get worse as she gets older!

Mothertoasuperhero · 22/08/2016 01:27

Pick your battles.. If she's 13 and wants to spend her time playing a game that will get her out of the house and socialising then be thankful.. I remember being 13 and not being so innocent. Ps.. Might be bias as me and 4yr old ds have spent most of the summer hols outside catching Pokemon! Grin

KC225 · 22/08/2016 08:15

Thanks OP. OF course I had heard of Pokemon but not really bothered about it. Having read this thread I have now downloaded it. DH has Wednesday off before the kids go back to school on Thursday, so we are taking the kids out for the day hunting for these little creatures. Thanks again.

Zombie Thread Alert!

Thanks to everyone who commented on my post, my controlling ex partner wouldn't let our daughter download pokemon go ( he had her iPhone set up with his email) at the time I texted a link to this thread and she cake home with pokemon downloaded, the power of mumsnet!

HebeSunshine · 29/09/2022 14:11

Are you updating your thread 6 years later? 😆🤣😂

Iguanainanigloo · 29/09/2022 14:11

What's the issue with it? My much younger dc love Pokémon go, and spend alot of time outdoors with their dad playing it on his phone, running around trying to catch more Pokémon, they enjoy it, and it gets them out the house, exercising in the fresh air. What's not to like?! It's not violent, or scary, just harmless interactive fun, that alot of kids (and adults!) seem to enjoy. I rarely get involved with their Pokémon adventures, as it doesn't interest me, but I see the joy it brings them and their dad, and equates to lots of quality time playing together. YABU, as you don't have to love it, just accept your DC does, that's what matters.

Iguanainanigloo · 29/09/2022 14:13

Oh haha, just seen it's a zombie thread. Glad your DC got her way!

LeakyTapTap · 29/09/2022 14:14

It's been around since 2016. Hardly a fad.
