AIBU?

To not let my 13 year old get Pokemon go

AIBU to not let my daughter who is 13 get Pokemon go because I think it's pointless and a waste of time and people are being ridiculed for playing it.

It just seems like a silly fad that will blow over.

My DM was just like you OP. She wouldnt let us have or do anything that was popular: Just because.

Just because everyone else had it. Just because it was popular.

But the real reason was just because she didnt like it.

I remember her being such a killjoy for absolutely no reason. I never understood her vehement objections to harmless things and I dont understand yours.

Of course it's a silly fad that's going to blow over. What did you play with as a child? I'm pretty sure I had all the fads there were. Everyone did. That's why they became fads - because they're fun.

You sound like a classic case of grumpy old killjoy who doesn't like to see "children these days" having fun. Live and let live. She's 13 for crying out loud.

Pokemon gets people up and moving, interacting and having fun!

Don't see the problem. Surely better than pogs? When walkers gave them away in crisps me and my friends would use all our lunch money to buy crisps! Pokemon go is much better

What would you rather your child done?

Sorry OP, YABU. I wish you could see how the little town where I live totally changes at night with people playing Pokemon Go. The town center used to be practically deserted from around 9 pm, now it comes alive after dark with people hanging out at the Pokestops and/or battling each other at the gyms.

Give over. I'm 25 and just got it. Love it. It already encouraging people to walk more.

I got it yesterday and within an hour I was taking my 3yo DD for a walk whilst we caught Pokemon. She LOVED it.

Don't be a grinch.

YABVU. It's brill.
But it's killing my battery, and annoying the shit out of my 15 yo when it keeps crashing just as he's going to take on a gym!

we walk a lot, but the kids are begging to go out, walk further, new routes. I think it's positive.

13 year olds are supposed to waste time. It's part of being a kid. If she wanted to go out boozing and partying I would be with you. Let her have the app.

I think YABU.

I decided to get it even though I have never been a huge fan of pokemon. Last night I went for a walk with OH after dinner. Something I have never done really! And I am planning on going out for a walk over the weekend.

If it gets people moving I cant see that being pointless. Just tell her to look where she is going whilst out playing.

YANBU. I wouldn't let mine get it either because it *is a waste of time!

There's plenty of things that are technically a waste of time but fun. Not letting your dd participate in the latest craze is mean IMO. Everyone on YouTube and school will be talking about it - why can't she join in?

Me and my usually sloth like teenager got our 10k walking badge after three days. Since he's never knowingly walked a centimetre more than he has too, I'd say that's the opposite of a waste of time! And we've had a proper laugh and chat while walking too, something that isn't often easy to get with a teenage boy. So to hell with all you joyless fuckers, I think it's a fantastic game! Grin

Most computer games are a waste of time. Least this one gets them outside. If they are safe then it's great

Report
DonkeyOaty · 15/07/2016 08:30

Gos YES to usually sloth like teens being out and about

AMAZING

Can't quite believe it, they trot off after homework, all that fresh air and exercise

If people are worried about their kids' safety, go with them?

If you can't trust them to have road sense then you shouldn't let them out alone anyway.

Report
BertieBotts · 15/07/2016 08:44

But they can still play the game. Since you can play it from within your own house. They can play it in the supermarket while you drag them for a weekly shop. Or in town while you buy things you need. To and from school/other activities (supervised, and you take the phone off them when they're at school).

What are all these 13 year olds supposed to be doing that is so much more enriching and productive than play?

Well actually Pokemon has always been a computer game iit started with the Gameboy originally called pocket monsters in early 1996 it became Pokemon when it was released world wide the card game came off the back later that year.

But there's a new mobile phone app where you use your phone and Pokemon appear in your real life surroundings and you have to collect them as you would in the card game!

You big misery.

It's fantastic fantastic fun. It gets people moving and talking to each other.

We had a fun walk to school today and caught a Zubat.

We are going on a family outing tomorrow to a local museum where there are loads of them.

Ds22 takes dd10 with him to go hunting. It makes my heart smile.

How can something which is such fun be bad? It's a really,...well..I'd call it joyful game. It is lighthearted, fun, happy and joyful.

Lighten up.

YABU! I live near a cluster of pokestops and love seeing groups of friends and families walking around - it sounds daft but it's really brought the quiet little area to life over the past few days.

Chances are it'll die out, but why not let her enjoy it?
