The problem with this is, as others have said, it's all so vague. Of course there will still be women athletes who are better than transwomen in their sport, and that will give ammunition to those arguing that transwomen have no inherent advantage. And there will be transwomen who are better than women, and then it will be argued that they're just... well... better. And in some sports that might be the case. It's such a crazy situation.

venusinscorpio · 28/01/2016 15:56

I doubt anyone would dare. Imagine the trans backlash for one person. Consider what Caroline Criado Perez got just for asking for women to be on banknotes.

venusinscorpio · 28/01/2016 15:57

one person

that person

LurcioAgain · 28/01/2016 16:01

The BBC have already nailed their colours to the transactivist mast. There have been a whole succession of articles on their website "explaining" trans issues for the person on the clapham omnibus (or should that be cis person on the Clapham omnibus?) with an emphasis on "gender is about how you feel inside" and "brains not matching bodies". They have established their editorial stance, so it's hardly surprising they get in a MTT wife beater and virtue signalling trans-friendly journalist to hold a non-debate.

seagreengirl · 28/01/2016 16:19

No one is saying anything about transmen and the difficulty they will have competing in the Olympics. It's almost as if they don't care...I wonder why Hmm

SisterMoonshine · 28/01/2016 16:22

I just looked on here to see how the Radio 4 debate was.
Oh Hmm

For me though, surgery or not, I think I still feel the same. So I don't think it's the new rules bothering me. But I guess what someone said just now about the fact surgery has been dropped as a requirement opens the door to thousands more trans competitors.

UndramaticPause · 28/01/2016 16:22

Word to the wise. Don't do a twitter search of terf. Your blood pressure will rise to dangerous levels.

GloriaSmellens · 28/01/2016 16:24

I have just had a quick look on twitter and there doesn't actually seem to be that much on there, but there are a few people moaning that it's just soooooo unfair because while trans women will be subjected to testing etc, trans men will just be able to compete Willy nilly (pardon the pun).

I mean, are these people just being deliberately obtuse, really fucking thick, or are they just totally deluded?

QueenStromba · 28/01/2016 16:29

I'm going to go for totally deluded - it comes across as religious fervour.

Snowshimmer · 28/01/2016 16:38

I am also SO angry.
Has this been linked to already?
gendertrender.wordpress.com/2016/01/26/olympic-committee-eliminates-medical-gender-change-requirement-for-male-athletes-who-want-to-compete-in-womens-sports/
This picture of the Iranian National Women’s Soccer Team looks like a Monty Python sketch, but it is real. 8 of 10 are male.
Men, get out of women's competitions!!! We've fought so hard to participate in sports already and many girls and women still have to fight to enjoy sports!

Last two. They do really believe it.

BeyondBootcampsAgain · 28/01/2016 17:07

Big big bit of really fucking thick with a serving of deluded virtue-signalling, imo

Bluebolt · 28/01/2016 17:08

I feel so sad for the future Nicola Adams, the athletes who winning the gold can transform their lives. Nicola and Barry mcguigan fought at roughly the same weight, even at his age it would only take one punch and I would put my money on him winning as now hormones will reduce his huge hands and reach.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 28/01/2016 17:16

Tbf Bluebolt I feel pretty damn concerned about the current Nicola Adams, never mind the poor sods trying to follow in her footsteps. I mean, how long do you think she has before she's expected to fight against a man and winds up with career ending injuries? It's going to be Tamikka Brents all over again Sad

PatMullins · 28/01/2016 17:20

Can I join the FB group please?

LurcioAgain · 28/01/2016 17:52

I remember booking leave off work so I could go home to watch Nicola Adams' gold medal winning bout - I was so chuffed when she won. The thought that she could be forced to go through what Tamikka Brents has been put through is both heartbreaking and terrifying (I don't know if everyone has watched the interview with Tamikka someone linked to on one of the other threads, filmed about a week after her fight, but it's absolutely terrible - she comes across as literally having been beaten senseless - I would be seriously worried about lasting brain damage if I were on her medical team).

"I've just told dh and he doesn't believe me - I sent him links and everything and he's still saying I must be wrong."
I must admit, my first thought was to check the at the date wasn't April first Sad.

It is just such a perverse decision, flying in the face of anatomy and physiology, I have to wonder what the fuck it is really all about. I would have said that there must be an almighty piece of Olympic shit (e.g. bribery, nepotism, something unsavoury) about to hit the fan and they're trying to drown it out with the furore that this will raise - but the furore doesn't seem to have materialised in the press, apart from the readers' comments.

Darrowisred · 28/01/2016 19:27

I would like to be added if someone can pm me.

HermioneWeasley · 28/01/2016 19:48

I wrote to my MP after Maria miller's report on TG equality was published. He said he found my "detailed letter" Grin interesting (good)has said he will pass it to MM for her to respond

Oh well, if enough of us write to our MPs it might make someone ask some questions??

poorbuthappy · 28/01/2016 20:00

Will it take the death (murder) of a woman athlete to force society to deal with this?

ExitPursuedByABear · 28/01/2016 20:07

I too told Dh and he looked at me as though I was mad and then talked about something else.

Surprisingly my mum (no interest in sport) & DH (no interest in feminism AT ALL) both said (in different conversations)but men are so much bigger/stronger/more powerful than women

DH plays mixed tennis & says he plays a different game when playing with 3 women - even when they are 20 yrs younger than him than when he plays with 3 men (he's 63 & actually disabled - Chronic Lung Disease)
