DD hates her name

She says it is ugly everyone laughs at it and can't pronounce it and I must hate her as I gave her an ugly name??? Has anybody experienced this, she is 12.

Tell her she can use whatever name she likes. She doesn't have to do a formal name change just yet. If she likes a new name, she can change it when she's 18.

It's probably a lovely name and those who say it's ugly are jealous! I used to get the mickey taken out of me because of my name but I love having an unusual name now.

My name is unusual and I hated it for all the same reasons as your DD. I wanted to be called Tracey.
Now I love my unusual name. It's very pretty.
Maybe your DD will change her mind.

Change her name to Sockpuppet. I think that'll work very well particularly on this day. & at least.. its an easy name to pronounce

I have said to her Leigh, she can use a middle name or nickname but she says it is stupid as everyone at school knows what she is called. She actually wants me to change her name legally and move schools to where no one knows her!

Does she have a middle name she can use ? A girl in my class at school was known by her middle name, eg Miss S. Anne Smith, known as Anne, rather than Miss Sarah A Smith. A friend of dds does this too. dds friend's parents decided to use her middle name, my school friend hated her first name so used the middle.

She's 12. Doesn't everyone do this at that age? I changed the spelling of my name at this age, so did my sister. Hopefully she'll grow out of it!

She does have a middle name (which begins with H, and I genuinely don't have a clue what message above means but if that's relevant) but she hates that too and it is old fashioned and doesn't go with our surname very well, as it was given to her after a dear friend of mine so it is a bit dated.

I haven't been on baby names, I don't know if it's some sort of in joke but it made me feel very uncomfortable and I still do feel uncomfortable and like I'm being accused of lying.

Of course her name isn't Sahlie. I think maybe you need to say what you want to say on the threads you are talking about.

She's never liked her name, but since starting secondary I think she's had so many comments and people not pronouncing it properly it's made her paranoid.

If it makes her happy you can just change her name by Statutory Declaration. You sign on her behalf (her dad also has to agree). Any high street solicitor can do it for you and will charge about £70.

I suggest that you add a name rather than deleting her current name. Then if she ever decides to revert to the current name she can do so.

You need to register the change of name with the school, GP, Passport office etc. The solicitors will give you a free certified copies for that purpose.

I went through a stage of hating my name when I was around that age. And hate a lot of things about myself and identity. Used to say similar to my mum too esp as I preferred my sister's names. Hated my middle name too. I'm not in love with it still at 29 but it's my name and it's what my parents chose for me. I've claimed it now!
I often think these sort of adolescent thoughts shouldn't be indulged too much, unless it's really serious. To my mind it is similar in nature to the idea of wanting lots of plastic surgery, the idea of wanting to be a different person that a lot of girls struggle with at some stage. And is sometimes but not always indicative of low self esteem.
And the thing is, kids will take the mick out of any and every name and to be fair, any facet of another person if they choose.

Maybe she could add an 'h' and pronounce it completely differently?

I am not getting these 'jokes' and would like them to stop.

My name is Bananaramah because my parents were in love with them. I think it sweetly pretty but many people point and laugh and make jokes about it. Tell her to punch them in the face like my dad told me. You only have to do it a few times.

Kids do this. I wanted to change my name her age. It was because I wanted the same name as the boy I fancied's sister. Because obviously, then he would love me.

She will grow out of it. And if she doesn't, she can do whatever the feck she likes with it at 18.

Keep telling her that. I bet her name is completely innocuous.
