Brits have an unhealthy obsession with hummus

It seems to be the only chilled product where a third of an aisle is taken up with a mind boggeling array of versions. Most people think its some king of health food, when actually its filled with generic vegetable oil and has far far more than a packet of crisps.

Its also uber easy to make your own in less than one minute that is vastly superior.

I just dont get it.

DonkeyOaty · 01/11/2015 21:52

I don't like it. Gag.

thornrose · 01/11/2015 21:56

Most people I know just like the taste! I don't know a single person who thinks it's the King of health food! Confused

insoectorgina · 01/11/2015 21:57

My office is full of people on a diet eating carrot sticks and it....

No other country goes so mad on the stuff

OP posts:
EnthusiasmDisturbed · 01/11/2015 21:57

I prefer sainbury's or even better tescos than my home made hummus

its not that hard to understand that some people cba to make it or prefer shop bought

GravityLucy · 01/11/2015 21:57

Are you familiar with this treatise on hummus? m.youtube.com/watch?v=cLGUFaizAHs

Sighing · 01/11/2015 21:57

The anti hummus threads seem to be a thing at the moment.
Well done on your cooking skills?

padkin · 01/11/2015 21:58

Horrible stuff. But then so is tzatiki and taramarsolata. It's a texture thing for me.

Branleuse · 01/11/2015 21:58

who said its the king of health food. I just thought it was delicious, especially the sweet chilli one, with falafels and pitta

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 01/11/2015 21:59

I don't like my home made hummus much. Must be the lack of oil and salt!

Duckdeamon · 01/11/2015 21:59

The few times I've tried to make it it's gone horribly horribly wrong.

Senpai · 01/11/2015 21:59

So are Americans. Hummus, pita bread, quinoa, and kale are all the rage here.

OP his many countries have you actually lived in and which ones weren't feeling the hummus love?

Leavingsosoon · 01/11/2015 22:01

I love hummus with caramelised red onion and a banana.

It is delicious.

thornrose · 01/11/2015 22:01

Sorry, how many countries!

Cookingongas · 01/11/2015 22:02

Don't be silly. Avacado is the health food - extraordinarily calorific fatty demon- of the linnet. Hummous went out a year ago.

Yet I still eat both in quantity as they're f- ing delicious

annandale · 01/11/2015 22:02

Beige food is top in the UK.

Chicken, chips, hummus, pitta and tea for that beige feeling.

I luffs hummus myself but yes lol at the idea it's a health food.

Cookingongas · 01/11/2015 22:02

Linnet? LINNET?!? Moment! Autocorrect crap

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 01/11/2015 22:03

Hummus is delicious, but I had no idea it's thought of as particularly healthy. Tbh the fact that I love it is fairly good indicator that it's not Blush

Missdread · 01/11/2015 22:04

I have a real problem with hummus. Seriously, I do. I HAVE to have it daily with Pommbears and Kettle Chips dipped in and (preferably) a glass of wine. It's probably me that's keeping the UK hummus market in business......

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 01/11/2015 22:04

I don't think I know anyone who eats hummus...

thornrose · 01/11/2015 22:06

But Miss do you mistakenly believe it's the fucking King of health food?

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 01/11/2015 22:06

What is so unhealthy about it? Isn't it just chickpeas and garlic which are pretty good for you.

I'm not keen on regular hummus but I tried peanut butter hummus once which I quite liked.

Junosmum · 01/11/2015 22:06

I love hummus. And yes, it's dead easy to make but then you have to wash up the blender which I hate doing.

Junosmum · 01/11/2015 22:08

Toads- it's chi kpeas garlic, lemon juice, tahini (sesame seed paste) and a ton of oil, olive oil in the quality stuff, generic vegetable oil in the supermarket stuff.
