Brits have an unhealthy obsession with hummus

It seems to be the only chilled product where a third of an aisle is taken up with a mind boggeling array of versions. Most people think its some king of health food, when actually its filled with generic vegetable oil and has far far more than a packet of crisps.

Its also uber easy to make your own in less than one minute that is vastly superior.

I just dont get it.

I love it too

Shakshuka · 01/11/2015 22:12

If you think the Brits have an unhealthy obsession with hummus then you clearly have never been to a Middle Eastern country....

ToadsJustFellFromTheSky · 01/11/2015 22:14

So I guess it's the oil that makes it unhealthy.

Surely that won't be a problem if you use olive oil, which again, is good for you.

Hatethis22 · 01/11/2015 22:15

Who thinks it's a health food Confused

I love it but am not a fan of tahini dressings/sauces as I find them too strong.

RiceCrispieTreats · 01/11/2015 22:16

No toads, it's chick peas and sesame paste (tahini), which is incredibly fattening.

annandale · 01/11/2015 22:16

Not in these amounts Toads.

Now am eating toast, hummus, carrots. I blame you lot.

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 01/11/2015 22:17

I once mentioned to a friend while were were in Waitrose (not a stealth boast, it was just to see what it was like) that I didn't like hummous. In earshot of some naice shoppers.

I could feel judgemental glares all the rest of the way round the shop.

Shakshuka · 01/11/2015 22:19

THIS is a hummus obsession Smile

It's just easy innit?

Like dairylea Grin or Nutella Grin Grin

specialsubject · 01/11/2015 22:21

no food is fattening. Guzzling too many calories is fattening.

no food is unhealthy per se (except canned fizzy drinks which aren't food)

serin · 01/11/2015 22:22

Is that tinned hummus??

Oh the camping possibilities!!

MadGhostlyGnome · 01/11/2015 22:23

I'm with toads, don't really see the issue if it's made at home with olive oil.

Moln · 01/11/2015 22:23

Did you receive a life time ban LeftMy, that would have been the only correct and proper reaction from Waitrose.

There's a lot of hummus hate around these here parts recently.

Hatethis22 · 01/11/2015 22:26

'Fattening' is silly. It is high calorie but that does not automatically = bad.

DoreenLethal · 01/11/2015 22:28

I make a fantastic version with spiced almonds instead of tahini. It also has the garlic and some onions slow cooked in it. it is fab.

BIWI · 01/11/2015 22:29

But you're wrong again specialsubject. Foods that are high in carbs are fattening.

But fats definitely aren't fattening.

Yes, sugary fizzy drinks are fatty, because they are hugely high in carbs.

Hummous is pretty carby, which makes it also a fattening food. It's definitely not a health food - and if you eat it with carrot sticks it's even more carby, which means it's even more fattening.

TheWernethWife · 01/11/2015 22:30

I love Sainsbury's organic hummus

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 01/11/2015 22:31

Moln - yeah, we got a lifetime ban when we went through the checkout and I exclaimed "fuck me, £40 for some fucking olives and some poncy bread and shit, that's not even a meal, we should have gone to fucking iceland".

Grin
Hollyweeeen · 01/11/2015 22:32

"No other country is mad on the stuff."

Have you been anywhere else? Houmous is eaten at practically every meal in Israel.

insoectorgina · 01/11/2015 22:32

Plenty of foods are bad. They are designed in labs to be highly addictive with q combination of fat and sugar that the human body finds very difficult to not over eat on. 2/3 of Brits are obese or overweight!

nightsky010 · 01/11/2015 22:35

British supermarket stuff is horribly gritty and watery.

mudandmayhem01 · 01/11/2015 22:35

If you are not overweight or actually trying to maintain a healthy weight hummus is a great thing to eat, I love it eat loads of it and lots of avocados too.

thornrose · 01/11/2015 22:35

OP I really want to know which countries you've lived in apart from the UK.

trollkonor · 01/11/2015 22:36

I used to live in a country where we had it daily for breakfast and lunch. People made it at home but the supermarket shelves were still full of ready made stuff. Really the UK obsession is very mild.

Food can be highly calorific and still be nutritious, it has lots of protein and keeps hunger at bay.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/11/2015 22:38

"And yes, it's dead easy to make but then you have to wash up the blender which I hate doing."

You have to buy tahini (sesame seeds) so you might as well just buy the humous.
