Brits have an unhealthy obsession with hummus

It seems to be the only chilled product where a third of an aisle is taken up with a mind boggeling array of versions. Most people think its some king of health food, when actually its filled with generic vegetable oil and has far far more than a packet of crisps.

Its also uber easy to make your own in less than one minute that is vastly superior.

I just dont get it.

Courgettes rookie? That's carb laden poison! You'll get fat instantly.

Have some dust. No carbs in that.

Blueandwhitelover · 02/11/2015 17:32

I want the perfect recipe for hummus with quantities! None of this some garlic or a dollop of oil- I want quantities (then I can adjust for taste)
and more to the point, how have I missed Yumboxes??? Is there a cheaper version anywhere?

MrsAlexanderSkarsgard · 02/11/2015 17:33

I would just like to announce that you are all wrong and that M&S Moroccan topped houmous/hummus/houmus/humus is the bestest and most tastiest ever Grin
All I need is that and a spoon to shovel it in eat it.

squoosh · 02/11/2015 17:34

I find hummus a bit bland.

rookiemere · 02/11/2015 17:34

You're so right Micah - why in fact do I need to eat at all. I should be able to manage perfectly well on a variation of 5:2 with 500 cals per day 5 days per week and 200 for the other two. This would be much better for me.

Off to scoop home made houmous out with chicken breast strips. Yum.

DoreenLethal · 02/11/2015 17:55

I am currently eating home made kidney bean and chick pea hummus; with avocado and haloumi salad.

GendrysHornyHelmet · 02/11/2015 17:56

I'm now thinking that the op is the aunty on Blackadder that only eats raw parsnips.

reni2 · 02/11/2015 18:12

Hummus is most delicious if replaced by a juicy steak just before serving.

noeffingidea · 02/11/2015 18:13

Has any one mentioned houmous spread on cream crackers with caramalised onion chutney yet? It's bloody lush.

Moln · 02/11/2015 18:15

well ok that's plámásed me some what IHaveBrilloHair.

trollkonor it does help and your words have do a lot in restoring my faith in humanity. Thank you.

hibbleddible · 02/11/2015 18:25

You think we are obsessed with hummus here?

You have clearly never been to Israel. They have numerous restaurants and street stalls that specialise in the stuff. It is yum!

Home made hummus is very healthy: chick peas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, a pinch of salt and a bit of water.

mudandmayhem01 · 02/11/2015 18:57

Parsnips surely not they are very carbyGrin

specialsubject · 02/11/2015 19:25

here's the perfect recipe in my opinion; it's all in the order of adding the ingredients.

life IS too short to skin a chickpea.

BikeRunSki · 02/11/2015 19:36

I live that the website special linked to has a Lenten Brownie recipe that uses tahini in place of eggs and butter, but still includes cognac!

Boleh · 02/11/2015 19:47

I use this recipe with the olive oil substituted by Greek yogurt - it's pretty garlicky so if you aren't a garlic fan I'd slightly reduce it.

trollkonor · 02/11/2015 19:50

Parsnip surprise is made from a vegetable that looks like a thingy.

ragged · 02/11/2015 20:25

third of an aisle? Really? Where are these aisles? I want to start shopping at that supermarket.

I luffs humus. I'd live on it if possible.

Lweji · 02/11/2015 20:36

I have taken the last batch of my home made hummous out of the freezer.

I'm blaming you all.

GendrysHornyHelmet · 02/11/2015 21:10

Oops. It's a turnip not a parsnip. Blush I suppose most parsnips are shaped a bit like a thingy. Are we still allowed to eat those or can I share some of the dust that's doing the rounds? Maybe Nanny Plum could make us all some steam.

bertsdinner · 02/11/2015 21:42

I love humus, I love its bland, pulsey texture and flavour. It is quite calorific though.

HopefulHamster · 02/11/2015 21:43

I had hummus with my dinner tonight just because of this thread, even though it didn't match the rest of what I was eating at all. Yum.

Janeymoo50 · 02/11/2015 21:54

Hummus should only ever be eaten on holiday in Greece/Cyprus etc with local wine, bread, sunshine, the sound of the sea etc etc. It should never be eaten in a sandwich with carrot and fruit...that thread still haunts me.

ragged · 02/11/2015 22:01

hummus tastes very spicy to me. Blush

MadGhostlyGnome · 02/11/2015 22:08

The Guardian (of course) has a good starting recipe for hummus which you can then use to tweak the garlic, lemon and salt to your exacting tastes.

No dust for me thanks, I'll stick to my carrots and hummus. I even roasted sweet potato (in olive oil! ) and dipped that yesterday which would probably give the carb police a heart attack, despite sweet potato being exceedingly good for you.

ragged · 02/11/2015 22:12

I'm intrigued now at folk who dislike hummus because it's "bland" .
Do you avoid bread, rice & potatoes for the same reason?
One of my many dislikes of white bread is for it being so boring.
Oh, and steak. Has no flavour whatsoever of its own.
