Brits have an unhealthy obsession with hummus

It seems to be the only chilled product where a third of an aisle is taken up with a mind boggeling array of versions. Most people think its some king of health food, when actually its filled with generic vegetable oil and has far far more than a packet of crisps.

Its also uber easy to make your own in less than one minute that is vastly superior.

I just dont get it.

I don't dislike hummus, but I do think it is bland. As is white bread. It's good to have something bland sometimes.

Hummus (unlike white bread) looks a bit like bf baby poo though.

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/11/2015 22:23

Oh my goodness, yes, steak. What is the point of it. Needs to be covered in deliciousness like béarnaise sauce, for it to actually be enjoyable. I thought I was alone in this thinking.

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/11/2015 22:26

Steak tastes delicious, but you need a decent steak.
I do agree that sometimes you need that white blandness, that's where cheap white bread and tinned chicken soup/instant mash feature.

reni2 · 02/11/2015 22:27

Oh I do understand why steak is lovely, by itself with a bit of salt and pepper, barely cooked.

Lweji · 02/11/2015 22:40

It depends on the bread.
It depends on the steak.

It depends how hummus is made and how garlicky and spicy it is.

Indole · 02/11/2015 22:43

How does steak have no flavour? That is just bizarre. It is full of flavour. You are doing it wrong! It needs to be really seared on the outside and very pink in the middle (or red if you can cope). Then it will be juicy, delicious and possibly one of the best foods on earth.

Also, hummus isn't bland! I have no idea what you people are on about!!

TheDowagerCuntess · 02/11/2015 22:57

See I disagree. I would choose pretty much any other meat over steak in a restaurant, and rarely cook it myself.

I've eaten good steak - just find it a bland meat when compared with others.

PrimalLass · 03/11/2015 08:11

Steak cooked properly is amazing. I brush it with garlic oil, s&p then sear it in a very hot pan. It is one of the things I never mess up, for some reason.

MedSchoolRat · 03/11/2015 09:58

very pink in the middle (or red if you can cope)

And full of E coli? (shudder).

TeamFinn · 03/11/2015 10:04

I thought e.coli was only on the surface of the meat so searing it killed it Confused

MedSchoolRat · 03/11/2015 10:07

yeah, that's what the experiments say.

But it's easy to contaminate nonetheless.

I've been reading too much about HUS lately. Not a fan of big slabs of meat anyway.

squoosh · 03/11/2015 10:08

I'm intrigued now at folk who dislike hummus because it's "bland" .
Do you avoid bread, rice & potatoes for the same reason?
One of my many dislikes of white bread is for it being so boring.
Oh, and steak. Has no flavour whatsoever of its own.

I never said I dislike it because it’s bland. I merely stated that I find it bland. The most boring component of a mezze platter.

It’s perfectly acceptable and perfectly scoffable if served to me but it will never be something I could get excited about.

p.s What the hell kind of steaks have you been eating? Steak has SO much flavour.

Indole · 03/11/2015 10:08

I always eat my steak pretty much raw in the middle and have never had any kind of illness as a result.

This suggests that minced meat is more likely to be a problem:

God I adore a big slab of rare steak!

E Coli be damned.

Happyminimalist · 03/11/2015 10:18

Having spent an hour talking to a Spanish man in his 30's last week, It seems the Brits have a weird obsession with fast food and convenience food.

Janeymoo50 · 03/11/2015 11:38

The best steak I ever had, ever - was on a flight (yep really - I have no idea either how they managed it!!). It was an airline called Wardair Canada - back in the mid 80's. They only had one class on that airline, Wardair Class so everyone was treated the same. I'm talking white linen napkins, glasses, and a fillet steak which simply melted in the mouth (plus afternoon tea and scones mid way across Canada).
I adore steak, we're thinking of a nice couple of rib eyes for Christmas Dinner - griddled somewhere slightly between rare and medium rare with some french mustard on the side, home made chips and some watercress (for show).

Hatethis22 · 03/11/2015 11:49

There's a Moro recipe that involves strips of rare steak served on a big pile of hummus if that helps.

squoosh · 03/11/2015 11:57

I would definitely be okay with that.
