Brits have an unhealthy obsession with hummus

It seems to be the only chilled product where a third of an aisle is taken up with a mind boggeling array of versions. Most people think its some king of health food, when actually its filled with generic vegetable oil and has far far more than a packet of crisps.

Its also uber easy to make your own in less than one minute that is vastly superior.

I just dont get it.

I live in the Middle East and hummus is practically a condiment!

I make my own. A tin of chick peas, juice of two lemons, garlic cloves and olive oil. Don't bother with the tahini. It's amaze. Fail to see how it is unhealthy....

It's not unhealthy. Nor are people obsessed with it, in fact I would guess most people don't even like it. I'm the only person in my house who eats it and that's probably just because I'm vegetarian. If I wasn't I'd probably eat pate or ham instead

GabiSolis · 02/11/2015 07:00

Houmous is lovely but I've never thought of it specifically as a health food.

Scotinoz · 02/11/2015 07:56

Hummus is very popular in Australia too, well Melbourne anyway.

It's delicious, and good in a wrap with falafels Smile

Mintyy · 02/11/2015 08:09

Lol at op getting worked up about the unhealthiness of hummus! I can take or leave it but have about a quarter of a pot maybe once a fortnight. I am on the fat side of chubby and you certainly can't put that down to hummus.

Perhaps you should start a thread about biscuits or sausage rolls op. Then you might have a point.

MadGhostlyGnome · 02/11/2015 08:18

Purely as a result of this thread I have made caramelised red onion hummus, and it is delicious.

Lweji · 02/11/2015 08:21

Come to Portugal, OP. You cannot find it in the supermarket.
I have to make my own. Which I freeze because I don't eat that much of it, just occasionally.

cantgonofurther · 02/11/2015 08:23

I love hummus! it tastes so good!

Lweji · 02/11/2015 08:29

You have to buy tahini (sesame seeds) so you might as well just buy the humous.

You can make it without, but I just put the sesame seeds in the food processor and mix it all together.

What I think is unhealthy is worrying about the carb content of a chickpea.

SusannahD · 02/11/2015 08:42

I love hummus, I love all the nice flavours you can get and a tablespoon of it can make a salad interesting.

mudandmayhem01 · 02/11/2015 08:43

Or that carrots are a bit carby!

Lweji · 02/11/2015 08:45

Cooked carrots are two sweet (don't like them) and a food to avoid if you have diabetes.

Chickpeas have protein, as beans.

maybebabybee · 02/11/2015 08:49

This with bells on! I suspect most of us eat it because it's tasty, not because we think it's a health food. In any case some carrot sticks with some hummus is a fairly healthy snack.

Don't think there's anything wrong with buying rather than making either. To be fair most home made hummus I've eaten tastes like mush, primarily because people in this country seem to have an aversion to adding any flavour to their dishes. I like my hummus with plenty of salt, lemon and garlic ta Grin

Thank you.

This is why I could never go low/no carb. What a miserable existence.

SnozBuriedUnderThePatio · 02/11/2015 08:52

I make my own because I find the shop ones bland but I haven't tried the different varities to be fair. I like houmous to be overwhelmingly garlicky.

insoectorgina · 02/11/2015 08:54

I've lived in many European countries, Asian and south american.

Never known as my h fresh hummus as the UK has, and its mainly full of generic vegetable oil so about as healthy as crisps!

maybebabybee · 02/11/2015 08:56

inso most people have clearly said they don't eat it because it's healthy, they eat it because it tastes nice.

SnozBuriedUnderThePatio · 02/11/2015 08:57

I love a carb or two.

What if we eat our homous with crisps? Will we all die?

insoectorgina · 02/11/2015 08:58

Yes I saw that, I find that part interesting it does not corrolate with real life. However many have also said they be I live it is healthy .

OP posts:
Lweji · 02/11/2015 09:06

The problem with crisps is that the oil is fried.
Vegetable oil per se is fine and healthy.

ivykaty44 · 02/11/2015 09:13

I just can't understand why anyone would wash up the blender, why wouldn't you put it in the dishwasher?

Hygellig · 02/11/2015 10:01

I like hummus but I didn't think it claimed to be a health food. I used to make my own which is probably healthier as I could reduce the salt content, but I've got lazy and prefer some of the brands that you can get in the shops.
