To say men playing video games is childish?

PampersNotPampered · 16/10/2015 13:21

My DP is the most wonderful person, and the video games don't annoy me to an extent of anger, but they do raise my eyebrow a lot.

DP is only 22 but I think this is still too old to be playing games, although I understand men more than twice his age do. I once asked DP ''aren't you a little old for those?" And his reply was a very calm 'no, it's a stress reliever and my boss plays it too' (his boss is 44 with a wife and 2 DCs).

What cringes me out the most is him swearing and talking to other players over the zombie games etc, who are mores often that not less than half his age or not much older than half his age! Yes, really.

I understand that I'm lucky he's the type to ask 'do you want me to come off this?' And often I just say no darling. This is because I can get on with other things. Even I ask him to come off, he will and you wouldn't have known he even liked playing because he acts so normal once he's off.

My DP is a 'normal' bloke in all aspects apart from the silly video games. I just wish he'd stick to fishing instead lol.

AIBU to say grown men playing video games is a little bit eye brow raising worthy? I understand it is a stress buster, and perhaps I'm just a moody cow and need to be put in my place by fellow MNetters.

Ooh! Is he playing Dying Light? If so you are missing a trick as DP and I have spent days very happily playing it together in coop mode.

I am a 42 year old gamer and proud of it. Am currently working my way through Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

Anyone else got Assassins Creed Syndicate on preorder?

Seriously though OP, sounds like it is something he really enjoys and is very considerate when it comes to coming off the game. I decided that if I couldn't beat the gamers in my house, I'd join them :-) Maybe you should consider it too!

Kacie123 · 17/10/2015 19:01

Ooh, will look up shadow of mordor, thanks!

Alien Isolation was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced Grin

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 17/10/2015 19:09

enslaved a few of us. toria has been persuaded into the bells and whistles edition by me

I have Arkham Knight but have only got to play the Harley Quinn DLC. My dp has commandeered it and has just finished the main plot.

jorahmormont · 17/10/2015 19:38

Until Dawn is gory if you make wrong decisions. I had a nightmare about the monsters in it the other night and it was bloody horrifying - but the game itself is brilliant, really makes use of the 'butterfly effect' (which so many games are adopting at the moment) and lets you see which decisions you made that influenced certain outcomes.

MsJamieFraser · 17/10/2015 19:49

dh and ds1 (9) are currently playing FIFA 16, (ds is battering dh Smile

dh plays 18+ games, when dc are in bed

both have been playing for 2+ hours so far... sat night is ds1 and dh down time/lie in's as ds/dh does not have to play football until 1pm, on Sunday.

Ds been up since 6am, trained with his academy, played 2 x 50 min football games (with his club) had lunch and then went and played 6, 20 mins games in a league competition (they won).

so NO I do not think men who play football are childish, I see it no different to "adults" watching mindless soaps. hate all soaps, dont get the entertainment value of them at all

MsJamieFraser · 17/10/2015 19:51

games not football Hmm

whois · 17/10/2015 19:58

Playing video games is only an issue of it is done at the expense of other things like doing their fair share of chores and family time.

I don't see it as any worse than watching TV really.

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 17/10/2015 20:40

I was just catching up an d was going to mention Dead Space and Alien Isolation - very creepy. I also liked Alien Colonial Marines, I loved playing as the xenomorphic, it was great fun sneaking up and savaging people.

I also loved Skyrim, it always feels like a game for a cold, wet day.

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 17/10/2015 20:41

*xenomorph that should be.

MrsCorbyn · 17/10/2015 20:46

Yanbu video games are childish regardless of gender

JCDenton · 17/10/2015 20:53

Is there an approved list of leisure activities for adults I can look up somewhere?

Is posting on internet forums on it?

gamerchick · 17/10/2015 21:06

You can play dying light in coop mode?

Fear not, the divys who say it's childish are the same ones who clutch their tits at kids playing adult rated games. There is no winning in their heads Wink

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 17/10/2015 21:10

What is the difference between watching TV and playing. Is it the controlling what you do part?

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 17/10/2015 23:16

My 3 game date with Nathan Drake has come to end now. Might have to go and play Mass Effect.

YouTheCat · 17/10/2015 23:45

Isn't it lovely how a thread about how we are all childish has turned into a games review? Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 17/10/2015 23:52

Cat, geeks stick together. One day we will take over the world and making gaming compulsory or a life sentence of hard gaming.

Finallyonboard · 17/10/2015 23:58

OP yanbu! It's so odd! Why would people prefer to waste their life in a pretend world of pointless games rather than spending time; with real people, making connections, enjoying nature, exercising etc! It's awful!

YouTheCat · 18/10/2015 00:12

Finally, I manage to do all of those things and still have time for gaming.

Have to say though, people are over rated.

Rdoo · 18/10/2015 00:48

Some of the views on this thread are really disgusting and I've seen them several times on mumsnet when games get mentioned.

"Childish", "immature", "unattractive", etc

I tell you what is childish, immature and unattractive, people sneering at someone's harmless hobbies.

I've spent most of my Saturday night playing "The Last of us" on the PS4. I've had a great night Grin. I think I'm nearly finished it. I have GTA to play next although I did play through most of it on the 360 I want to play it again on the PS4.

Have any of my gaming buddies played Far Cry 4, I LOVE that game and I can't wait for the next one!

paramedicswift · 18/10/2015 01:07

YABU

I am sure your partner thinks you have some childish hobbies too

No hobby is 'superior' or 'more proper' than any other, live and let live

jorahmormont · 18/10/2015 01:07

The geeks shall inherit the earth!

Finally funnily enough I manage to play games AND spend time with real people, make connections and enjoy nature etc etc. Maybe we're just better at multitasking than you? :)

For what it's worth, I'd rather play a game than 'make connections' if it meant connecting with sneering snobs like you :)

I haven't played Far Cry 4 yet but sooo want to, I have so many games to catch up on!

LuisCarol · 18/10/2015 01:16

OP yanbu! It's so odd! Why would people prefer to waste their life in a pretend world of pointless games rather than spending time; with real people, making connections, enjoying nature, exercising etc! It's awful!

If you replaced the word "games" with "stories", would you feel the same about books?

kali110 · 18/10/2015 01:45

I think it's childish and ignorant to call to judge people simply for what they enjoy doing.
Cannot believe some of the crap that has been posted on here Hmm
I'm in my 30's. I started around 16 . I admit i haven't been on my playstation or wii for year or two however i'm addicted to the games on my phone.
Yes i have piercings and some tattoos, ( not all visible) however i'm definetly very feminine! Grin
I could say playing board games, doing jigsaws or puzzles is childish, but i won't. I'm not ignorant.
I also find as a chronic pain sufferer that it is very helpful at distracting me from my agony.

HappyMeerkat · 18/10/2015 01:55

LuisCarol

exactly, many people read and a lot of games are in a sense stories that you interact and play through, whilst other's like CoD (online) and FIFA are stress relief and provide a safe and satisfying way to de stress and be competitive as they are largely indiscriminate of somebody's physical capabilities everyone starts on an equal playing field.

personally i find fishing or knitting boring and involve less interaction, brain engagement and variable than gaming and due to this they could be classed as childish and immature due to the dullness and inactivity of any kind of thinking, but thats what people decide to do for a hobby and let them get on with it without judging (except in situations like this to show my view on different hobbies)

NuckyS · 18/10/2015 08:35

Dammit, looks like I missed a great Bioware yarn...big Mass Effect geek here (just started my fourth playthrough from scratch)

36 year old gamer here, still in the midst of a four year and counting affair with Skyrim.
I think there are some troubling things about gaming culture at times, but by and large it is no more or less 'mature' than other leisure activities.
