...to not shave higher than my knees?

SingingSamosa · 10/06/2015 00:03

I recently told* some of friends, at a group we go to, that when I shave my legs, I only do my big toes my lower legs and occasionally my knees. Apparently this is highly unusual and very odd behaviour on my part! I have very fine and fair hair on my thighs (despite being very dark haired) and so have never felt the need to shave them.

Is this odd and unreasonable behaviour? I'm surely not alone in this?

*it came up randomly in conversation, I didn't just sit there and blurt it out!

I feel your pain. :(

(although I am not that hairy, but let's just say that I prefer good coverage around the crotch.)

UngratefulMoo · 11/06/2015 20:38

I don't shave my thighs. What a thought! I do shave my big toes though, and am not ashamed of it.

emwithme · 11/06/2015 20:40

Christ, sometimes I just shave my ankles-to-midcalf (if I'm wearing capri-length). I depilate the minimum I feel necessary, mainly cos I'm a lazy moo and DH can do one if he has an issue

Generally I do lower legs once a fortnight, armpits every shower, upper leg/bikini when needed by swimwear or similar (although I trim it more frequently so it's not a TOTAL 70s porn bush), face is about every 4 - 6 weeks when I've looked in the mirror and thought "FUCK I look like a teenage boy

KatieScarlettreregged · 11/06/2015 20:44

I have thick dark hair on my head, my fanny and my underarms. The rest of my body hair (including eyebrows, which I dye) is blonde and fine. I have never shaved my legs above the knee. I am 46.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 11/06/2015 20:49

People shave higher than the knees? Shock Who knew?

Lozy79 · 11/06/2015 20:53

I have really fine hair and would love a thick head of hair like some of my friends, but found the downside to thick hair is some of them need to shave all over their legs everyday and even their tummies and nipples. Now my underarm hair is actually non existent and i shave my lower legs about once a month. So that is fab, yet I still long for beautiful thick (head)hair.

SoupDragon · 11/06/2015 20:53

Soupy is that because the hairs don't show or you choose not to?

They just don't show to the point where I would say there aren't any (there are though, if you look closely). Below the knee though - gorilla territory by the end of winter! I am very dark haired.

Mousefinkle · 11/06/2015 21:08

My friend told me last summer that she needed to shave her thighs for the first time in almost a year because she'd be getting her legs out with the weather and all. I was taken aback that anyone shaves their thighs at all, ever. She's blonde and has blonde hair everywhere as well so WHY? I don't get the need to shave thighs, I can't see them ever getting stubbly like the lower legs surely?!

Never shaved them, never will.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 12/06/2015 16:05

Please can we stop with all the shocked faces?? WTF is the matter with some of you?

Purplepixiedust · 12/06/2015 16:09

I only shave up to my knees. When I used to go for waxing I only had half leg. YANBU.

Cornettoninja · 12/06/2015 16:19

Absolutely alibabs, I'm Hmm at all these women who seem unable to comprehend that their normal isn't everyone else's.

This thread is the reason I will never go to a fair haired beautician. There's nothing weird about me other than the fact I have dark hair, pale skin and genes that have blessed me with a liberal covering of fur, thighs and torso included. It's not fun choosing to spend hours removing the bastard stuff because of people using terms like 'yeti' and treating female body hair like some sort of deformity ffs.

SnakeyMcBadass · 12/06/2015 16:20

I shave from ankle to hip every other day. Hate having hairy knees. Thigh hair is virtually non existent, so no stubble. Do underarms at the same time. I just prefer having smooth legs.

Bunbaker · 12/06/2015 16:24

"Please can we stop with all the shocked faces?? WTF is the matter with some of you?"

I agree. Just wait until you get to my age and the hair grows in all sorts of places you don't want it to.

Dawn Grin

I shave my thighs, I have dark hair. No tummy or arse hair (much) though. I even (shock horror) sometimes shave my arms, they're blonde but I have a lot of ink Wink and it looks better (IMO for me, no one else) with a strappy top.

And for all you blondes, my oldest friend was a blonde and never shaved above the knee. We'd sometimes share a bed after nights out as a teen and yep, she had rough legs Grin

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 12/06/2015 18:06

In defence of my own shocked face, I genuinely have never thought about it or had it come up in conversation. I was shocked at my own ignorance. I don't think that means there is something the matter with me (there are lots of things wrong with me, but I don't see how thats one of them!)

JasperDamerel · 12/06/2015 18:14

I think the shocked faces are not that some women with lush and vigorous thigh hair choose to remove that hair, but that it was considered shocking for a woman with sparse, fine, blonde hair which was virtually invisible to leave her thighs unshaven.

chibi · 12/06/2015 18:20

Oh god this crap

'I have three blonde hairs on my entire body and can't understand why anyone shaves, how awful, why would you do such a thing'

How anyone gets to adulthood not realising that other people are different, different bodies are not the same, and people like the things they like which may not be what they themselves like...

chibi · 12/06/2015 18:22

And really crappy to make people feel like their bodies are defective if they have more than three blonde hairs on their bodies

Piss off with that

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 12/06/2015 18:24

Julietee I think we might be twins.
I am hairy like a man all over, I am not ashamed of it, it's just who I am it's not like people who have very faint, light hair have worked hard to achieve that! It's just my body and it happens to be hairy as fuck.
So yes I do shave above the knees.
Doesn't bother me apart from the facial and neck hair, that does upset me a bit. It's just so relentless.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 12/06/2015 18:26

Well, not being completely blind or terminally stupid, I (and I'm guessing others) never for a minute imagined every woman has a body exactly like my own (which has a lot more than 3 blonde hairs). But I never really spent much time wondering exactly where and how much body hair is on another body. Shoot me for having a blind spot. Hmm
Hardly something to get all worked up about. I imagine there are things you've never thought about too, and would be surprised to learn.

HesterShaw · 12/06/2015 18:27

I have luxuriant foliage on my lower legs which is blonde (beat that) and I haven't shaved it since April when I had my smear test.

It's not been remotely hot enough here yet for shorts.

Shave if you want. Don't if you don't want to. Your friends are very rude.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 12/06/2015 18:27

*And really crappy to make people feel like their bodies are defective if they have more than three blonde hairs on their bodies

Piss off with that*

Hey, nobodies making you feel anything. If you've got an issue its your own, don't go pushing it on to others. Piss off with that

Sallystyle · 12/06/2015 18:31

I rarely shave, sometimes I only do the bottom bit where shorter trousers may show off just above my ankle.

I have never ever shaved higher than my knees.

chibi · 12/06/2015 18:32

Oh ok. Perhaps you thought suggesting that anyone whose body doesn't meet some gold standard of womanness was somehow freakish was actually a way of making conversation?

I guess there really are all kinds of people
