...to not shave higher than my knees?

SingingSamosa · 10/06/2015 00:03

I recently told* some of friends, at a group we go to, that when I shave my legs, I only do my big toes my lower legs and occasionally my knees. Apparently this is highly unusual and very odd behaviour on my part! I have very fine and fair hair on my thighs (despite being very dark haired) and so have never felt the need to shave them.

Is this odd and unreasonable behaviour? I'm surely not alone in this?

*it came up randomly in conversation, I didn't just sit there and blurt it out!

Re Apparently this is highly unusual and very odd behaviour on my part I would say as you do it is nether unusual nor odd on your part. For you it is utterly normal.

They are pretty rude to comment on it.

I have never shaved above the knee and the hair on my legs above the knee is very fine and light.

I wish I had never started shaving my hair and I would imagine it would all be very fine still. Too late for me now. i wish the younger generation of women would cotton on to the fact if you just leave it it is not so hairy and let Imac/Venus and all those bloody waxes make their money elsewhere!

(During winter I barely shave at all and I look pretty normal!)

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 10/06/2015 02:49

Yanbu, I only do up to my knees.

I'm fair haired anyway but I can't be arsed with anything more. My years of cuts to my knees from shaving are long gone.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 10/06/2015 02:56

I've never gone higher than my knees, I really don't need to as my hairs are very very fine and fair. I wouldn't have started on my lower legs except for some reason the hairs around my ankles started to go darker and curly!
For ages I didn't do the inside of my calves either as there was virtually nothing there; but after a few waxing sessions, where the waxer did the whole lot, I just started doing the whole lower leg too.

I wouldn't dream of interfering with my upper legs as things stand.

thiskiwicanfly · 10/06/2015 03:24

Only to my knees here either, occasionally (very occasionally) I might do slightly higher but only when I have a brain fade in the shower and just go a bit high and then have to even it up. Legs and pits shaved every couple of days, brazillian wax every 6 weeks or so (when I remember to book it).

So no, you are not unusual or abnormal - you do you and they can do them and it's no-one else's business tbh.

FindoGask · 10/06/2015 05:18

I don't understand why anyone else should care how much you shave your legs?!

Itsraininginbaltimore · 10/06/2015 05:24

No YANU and it's not unusual at all - I do the same. But then I am pretty much hairless above the knee anyway, so perhaps it's just the really hairy people that find it odd!

I know a girl who has her bum and lower back waxed. Shock

spottybottycream · 10/06/2015 05:24

Yuk, stubbly thighs!

NobodyLivesHere · 10/06/2015 05:26

I only do to my knees generally. I do my thighs in the summer/on holiday. It's not weird either way!

NormaStits · 10/06/2015 05:26

The hair from my knees down is thick, long and black so when I shave, I take that off. Above the knees, it is so fair and fine you can barely see it.

I don't think shaving causes lower leg hair to get thicker and darker. I've saved very sporadically all my adult life and it's still like this. Both of my grandmothers never removed their leg hair and it was thick black also. I remember seeing it through their skin coloured tights as a child, it was really noticeable!

NormaStits · 10/06/2015 05:28

Just to add, one grandma was very fair, ginger with freckles and fine blond arm hair, blonde armpit hair, but still thick black leg hair.

ToysRLuv · 10/06/2015 05:33

Whoever asked whether thigh hair could even be coarse and dark -yes it can Sad. Fecking mediterranean genes. I have legs as hairy as mu husband, a hairy tummy and hairy nipples. I often dream about a vat of magic hair removal stuff, that I could just sit myself in from neck down. Alas, I have to save to buy a Lumea..

ButterflyUpSoHigh · 10/06/2015 06:35

I do the same I thought most people did.

keeptothewhiteline · 10/06/2015 06:50

Depends on your hair growth but I suspect most woman don't need to shave their thighs. I can't think of much less appealling than stubble on the thighs.
I have very light growth on my thighs, not noticable, and have never shaved them.

gamerwidow · 10/06/2015 06:53

I would love to be able to shave only to the knees but unfortunately I have thick dark coarse hair all the way up.
Very painful in summer when the stubble rubs together on my thighs. I'm thinking of giving up and just wearing trousers. OP consider yourself lucky and be pleased you get away with only shaving bottom of legs. I suspect your friends are jealous of your lovely smooth thighs Wink

meglet · 10/06/2015 06:56

I wax my thighs. The hair is dark but I don't get ingrowing hairs higher up.

muppetme · 10/06/2015 07:02

Thanks to everyone that says there's something wrong or anormal about shaving thighs. I'm sure all the women with PCOS on this forum will feel much better about reading that :s.
I shave/ trim everything below belly button. Plus pits and face wax at least once a week. :(

I only shave up to my knees too! I thought that was the norm.

Bodicea · 10/06/2015 07:10

I wax up to my knees. Nothing above. Blonde extremely fine down on my thigh. Would never touch it! Don't want Stubbly thighs. Yuck!

cariadlet · 10/06/2015 07:10

Up to knees - and only in Summer. In the winter I live in trousers or very long skirts and thick black tights so only poor DP has to see my hairy legs.

meglet · 10/06/2015 07:12

muppet some people are oblivious to how much hair removal some dark haired women have to do. I don't have pcos but have had a constant hair removal regime since I was about 14.

Bodicea · 10/06/2015 07:13

Ps is you have to sorry. To be fair I am jealous of my v hairy dark haired friends who have fabulous eyebrows and eyelashes. I have to dye mine which is a pita. We each have out cross to bear!

SoupDragon · 10/06/2015 07:13

The hair on my thighs is invisible. I have never shaved or waxed it beyond a skmgle attempt to see if it made any difference to appearance (it didn't).

So, no I don't shave above the knees and no it isn't because I'm doing a half arsed job.

Lolly86 · 10/06/2015 07:13

I have dark hair on my arms and legs so it all gets shaved whole leg and bikini area under arms and the arm itself. Otherwise I feel very manly Confused

Bunbaker · 10/06/2015 07:18

"It's possibly a "youth thing""

Nope. I'm 56 and would look like Mr Tumnus if I didn't do the whole leg

"Do thighs even get hairy (I mean beyond usual fine hairs)?"

Yes. It might be an age thing. As you get older the hair on your head gets thinner and becomes more abundant in places you don't want it. My thighs never used to be this hairy (and neither did my upper lip and chin). I have very dark hair BTW.

I use an epilator now.
