...to not shave higher than my knees?

I recently told* some of friends, at a group we go to, that when I shave my legs, I only do my big toes my lower legs and occasionally my knees. Apparently this is highly unusual and very odd behaviour on my part! I have very fine and fair hair on my thighs (despite being very dark haired) and so have never felt the need to shave them.

Is this odd and unreasonable behaviour? I'm surely not alone in this?

*it came up randomly in conversation, I didn't just sit there and blurt it out!

Well it is usually considered polite not to say 'eww gross how revolting etc' when people are talking about things their bodies do, even if it is something your body doesn't do.
Not saying that you in particular have had that response but some people have been quite unpleasant.

chibi · 12/06/2015 18:35

it wasn't the surprise so much as the ewwww who does that? Oh my god, no one has that kind of hair on their legs

I've no doubt others do things I don't when it comes to grooming. I would probably avoid suggesting they had something wrong with their bodies however

I'm funny like that, me

MarchLikeAnAnt · 12/06/2015 18:35

Does anyone else have to shave their feet? I do Sad I'm so hairy, its really horrible.

uttercyclepath · 12/06/2015 18:35

I have never shaved above my knees.

Come to think about it I don't think I've ever seen hair on my thighs. It must be very fine.
I need to have a look.

CatthiefKeith · 12/06/2015 18:36

If I only shaved to my knees I would look like I was wearing mohair cycling shorts!

ghostyslovesheep · 12/06/2015 18:36

it's not a youth thing - I'm 45

I am dark haired and my back of knee/thighs are darked haired

I shave full leg and bikini line because although I don't wear short stuff I'd feel like I was wearing hairy shorts if I didn't

Sallystyle · 12/06/2015 18:38

I always thought that people with light hair were less hairy. Then my blonde dd was born and she is 8 now and has loads of hair on her arms and legs and back. While they are light they are very noticeable. It already worries her which makes me really sad.

Elletorrito · 12/06/2015 18:39

Trying to do less and less hair removal despite getting hairier every year. It's my small act of rebellion against our beauty norm of being hairless. Feel less self conscious each time I go out with stubbly legs.

I have 2 under 3 and spare time is for sleeping or doing fun stuff. I don't find hair removal fun.

When my dd was little I didn't take her swimming for a year because I was too knackered to do any shaving. I let my embarrassment stop me and she missed out.

So I'm working hard on not caring. Also I don't reckon most people really look/ judge at the swimming pool.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 12/06/2015 18:41

Winter this statement just confirms how wilfully ignorant you are.

'Hardly something to get all worked up about'.

Stop for a moment and think about what it would be like to be ALWAYS worrying about thick visible hair. Never able to agree to spontaneous swimming/beach trip. Half an hour in the bathroom most days to make sure you haven't missed any. Choosing clothes based on which bits of you they will cover, dreading someone touching your skin incase they feel the stubble.

Think about it, just for a minute. And then tell me that it is hardly something to get worked up about.

Sallystyle · 12/06/2015 18:43

While I am here and we are talking about hair, what do people do with facial hair? I have started to grow some light facial hair, especially on the lip.

I can't wax due to being on retin a. I could get it threaded but that would hurt? Shave?

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 12/06/2015 18:44

Elletorrito, I'm trying to do the same thing. Sometimes I chekc the mirror before I go out and see a fresh load of chin/neck hairs and think, fuck you world I am not confirming to this women must be bald everywhere except the top of the head nonsense and so I deliberatly don't pluck them. It's a small rebellion and I still spend way to much time plucking but I have realised that even with noticeable and obvious facial hair I still have good friends, family a loving boyfriend and a good job, so the world will not implode just because I have hair in the same place that millions and millions of men are allowed to have hair.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 12/06/2015 18:46

U2 join me in my mild rebellion! Pluck when you can be arsed, otherwise just accept that sometimes the world will see you with a hairy face. If you are a loveable person you will still be loveable even with facial hair.

MarchLikeAnAnt · 12/06/2015 18:47

It seems I'm alone in the world with my hobbit feet then..Grin

RiverTam · 12/06/2015 18:47

Well said, Alibabs. I find this depressing enough for myself but 5yo DD has hairy legs AND a hairy back so doubtless will be surrounded by people going Shock every 5 fricking minutes, once she's old enough for this to be an issue. Poor mite, she has hobbits for parents (too short-arse to be yetis, thigh plenty hairy-arse).

RiverTam · 12/06/2015 18:48

Though, not thigh, though it's true if my thighs too.

RiverTam · 12/06/2015 18:49

I have hobbit feet, March. And I once cut my toes shaving them.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 12/06/2015 18:50

March you are not alone! I have thick black hair pretty much everywhere except my eye balls.

grapejuicerocks · 12/06/2015 18:55

I feel so sorry for DD who is blessed with her fathers fur. I know you can't have laser treatment until you are 18 but roughly how much will it cost for full legs?

GaryBaldy · 12/06/2015 18:57

March you are not alone, I have hairy toes and tops of feet Sad

It's good to know I'm not alone. Flowers and Cake for all those like us.

Rainbunny · 12/06/2015 20:03

I still remember the first time dh walked in on me shaving my toes. He thinks he's very original when he laughs about my hobbit feet...

I also have incredibly thick and long eyebrow hairs, unfortunately not nice looking like Keira Knightley's... It took me until my mid twenties to learn that women trimmed their eyebrows, literally a life changing moment for me!

poppym12 · 12/06/2015 20:57

I think my legs must be upside down. Rarely need to defuzz lower legs at all but I get hairy knees and thighs Blush

Julietee · 14/06/2015 14:57

facial epilator. I don't have to wax my moustache any more.
