To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

This is so scary!

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 21/05/2015 22:37

Our downstairs loft hatch sometimes lifts up of its own accord when it's very windy, especially if for some reason it's very windy and we have both front and back door open simultaneously (momentarily, before the inevitable slam!).

Doesn't explain your random door unlocking, though...

Am intrigued, op!

MagelanicClouds · 21/05/2015 22:37

If its a creepy doll.... Your only hope is KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!

Ahem.

It's probably just air pressure or something equally as dull.

Waltermittythesequel · 21/05/2015 22:37

Where is he??

Has the wife turned up??

What's Luther?!

wigglylines · 21/05/2015 22:38

I second it's probably kids.

But I would call the police, not wait for my partner to come home.

I was going to put some boxes in my loft tonight. Instead, I seem to be obsessed with what may or may not be in someone else's loft Hmm

daisysunflower · 21/05/2015 22:39

Cat's with thumbs maybe?

PeachyPants · 21/05/2015 22:39

Bloody hell I think no matter what happens I'd be buying nanny cams to set up all over the house to see if I could get to the bottom of the opening door and hatch.

SnotQueen · 21/05/2015 22:40

Oh God, my bedroom is a converted attic room.
My bed is right next to a loft hatch.
I hope I see morning Confused

Gilrack · 21/05/2015 22:40

Oh, good lord, it's obvious. The pregnant wife is in Blue's loft.

Chocolateporridge · 21/05/2015 22:40

This has totally boosted my fear of loft hatches, please post soon op so we know the outcome or I may never sleep again!

Christinayanglah · 21/05/2015 22:40

Dixie

What will you do if you find someone

looks for bag for life so don't need to go to bathroom, in case of ankle grabbing

SomedayMyPrinceWillCome · 21/05/2015 22:40

Hope OP's DP is home now & investigating (yep, I'm place marking too)

daisysunflower · 21/05/2015 22:41

Yes, I need to get to bed really but am hanging around a bit for an update.

Mrsstarlord · 21/05/2015 22:42

Missing wife?

MoreBeta · 21/05/2015 22:43

Put some flour on the floor under your hatch before you go out.

Go out. Lock the door as normal and just wait outside hidden. If someone comes out you know it is them. If they just walk around your house you will see the flour footprints.

You can also buy fairly cheap home security video cameras in Homebase that you can set up yourself.

Also change your locks. We always change our whenever we move.

You can buy barrels for Yale type locks in Homebase. You dont need an entire new lock - just swap the baarrels.
