To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

I so wish I hadn't watched the trailer for Poltergeist tonight...

BettyCatKitten · 21/05/2015 22:27

PeachyPants · 21/05/2015 22:28

This thread has scared me shitless. I hope you are feeling ok OP, I'd have been out of there hours ago.

Gilrack · 21/05/2015 22:28

Why wouldn't a secret lodger use the house loo during the day? Confused

curlyweasel · 21/05/2015 22:29

T'was a dark, dark night on the moors...

bellathebluebell · 21/05/2015 22:29

Oh my flipping good god! Have just landed on this thread. I seriously hope you don't live in Midsomer!

Reminds me of when DH and I went to look at a house. The family had gone out and the estate agent was showing us around. He opened the loft hatch and DH had a look only to be confronted by the teenage son when he turned the light on. We still laugh about it now.

MagelanicClouds · 21/05/2015 22:29

If, when someone does go up for a look, all you find is a box of old films....
Please don't watch them.
I might have seen too many horror films.
Is it safer to stay locked in or run off into the night?

TandemFlux · 21/05/2015 22:30

Hold tight OP!

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 21/05/2015 22:30

Occasionally I can't find my keys when DH is dropping DD at nursery and I need to leave for work so I don't bother locking the door.

Not doing that again!!! Shock

Gilrack · 21/05/2015 22:30

Grin bella

LuluJakey1 · 21/05/2015 22:31

Do not go and check the hatch. Do not unlock the bedroom door even. It never ends well when people do it in films. Wait until DP arrives home and confirms it is safe.

PeachyPants · 21/05/2015 22:32

MagelanicClouds or perhaps a creepy old doll or mannequin.

Christinayanglah · 21/05/2015 22:32

Dh thinks his luck is in as I have snuggled right up to him in bed, haven't the heart to tell him it's scary loft story on mumsnet

26Point2Miles · 21/05/2015 22:33

Men living under beds? How weird. Everyone watch your ankles when going to bed tonight...

Aermingers · 21/05/2015 22:33

Tell DP to hurry up! The whole of Mumsnet is waiting for him.

Withalittlesparkle · 21/05/2015 22:33

Errrr has no one seen Paranormal Activity? Seriously loft hatches give me the creeps at the best of times!!!

26Point2Miles · 21/05/2015 22:34

Maybe DH is home.... He's maybe downstairs still, tied up in the utility room!

twirlypoo · 21/05/2015 22:34

Holy crappola. I just read this, went and checked under Ds bed no one living there and then looked at my loft hatch suspiciously. I honestly don't know how your so chilled out waiting for your husband to get home. I'd of piled us all in the car and been in a travelodge on Monday Grin

sunnydayinmay · 21/05/2015 22:34

daisysunflower · 21/05/2015 22:34

wowfudge · 21/05/2015 22:35
