To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

Oh Lordy! I'm feeling scared for you op! But I'm sure there is a logical explanation. Please update!

RandomMess · 21/05/2015 21:51
Shock
blankgaze · 21/05/2015 21:52

What sort of house is it OP? Sometimes the loft spaces between houses are open when they shouldn't be and kids that have been grounded take great delight going into their own loft and exiting and re-entering via a neighbour's house when they know the neighbour will be out.

Make sure that whoever goes up into the loftspace(s) checks out the dividing wall between you and next door, tap it all over to make sure it's solid, if you hear a hollow noise, investigate further, it could be a way through to next door.

I'd want the Police to check too.

CuttingOutTheCrap · 21/05/2015 21:52

Agree with PPs that anyone trying to live in the attic r whatever wouldn't leave the door wide open, they'd try to remain undetected surely. The hatch moving is probably just wind - we have one that does that. Can't explain the door though if you are sure that a)you locked it on the days it was opened and b) no one else has a key

DextersMistress · 21/05/2015 21:52

If you do decide to call the police I wouldn't do it within earshot of the loft hatch. Any potential murderer person up there might not take kindly!

Ironfloor · 21/05/2015 21:52

I agree with whoever said that it's a trick of the wind. It doesn't make sense that someone living in the loft would leave the back door wide open.

indyandlara · 21/05/2015 21:52

Call the police. That is very odd and needs checked out.

FarFromAnyRoad · 21/05/2015 21:53

This can happen. Really. I worked in a place years ago - think large restaurant, old building, nooks and crannies etc. I don't think we'd ever have found him if someone hadn't been poking in artificial ceilings, loft spaces etc whilst looking for mice. Found a chap living up there - didn't speak a word of English. Police took him away and we never really heard much about it after that. Didn't want to press charges because he'd not really caused damage or harm - but it can happen.
Sorry OP. Grin

Starlightbright1 · 21/05/2015 21:53

Gosh..Have you told him there is a whole MN community waiting. Hopefully there is a simple explanation

Hypotenuse · 21/05/2015 21:54

If there is someone in there please shake them and berate their rediculous life choices, especially their lack of stealthiness. Leaving the door open? Amateur!

UnsolvedMystery · 21/05/2015 21:55

If someone was hiding in the loft, why would they leave the door open? that makes no sense.

TartanTrousers · 21/05/2015 21:55

Eek, this is terrifying! Hope your DP is home soon to check...

FujimotosElixir · 21/05/2015 21:57

OMG how creepy, id second sending DP or police up there.

Fabulassie · 21/05/2015 21:58

I'M POSTING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!

AGnu · 21/05/2015 21:58

When DP checks, make sure the back door is open, just in case he gets a foot in his face & the intruder tries to escape. Far better to let them go & call the police afterwards than to find yourself trapped in the house with them!

I'm not helping, am I?! Blush

Gilrack · 21/05/2015 22:00

Grin Hypotenuse. I'm pretty sure you're safe, OP, you have been so far as you say.

I'm very quick to rule out 'weird' explanations but charities were warning that, with homelessness becoming such a crisis, more people were likely to try holing up in unused parts of other people's homes. I think they meant sheds & stuff, mostly, but a loft wouldn't be unimaginable if the "lodger" could get in & out during the day.

Also true about connecting lofts, though - and surprising wind effects!

Hope DP's up there now :)

MadamG · 21/05/2015 22:00

Oh Op take care!

DowntownFunk · 21/05/2015 22:00

A friend of mine had a random bloke living in her pre schooler son's bedroom. They discovered him under the bed after noticing an odd smell.

He was homeless, harmless and had form for doing the same at other people's houses according to the police.

LoopyLily · 21/05/2015 22:01

Your braver than me op! I hope no one is living in your loft Shock

DowntownFunk · 21/05/2015 22:02

Apologies, I realise my post above doesn't help. Posted to show that these things do happen.

Tiredmumno1 · 21/05/2015 22:02

Fab that was just hilarious mean Grin

Hope you are ok OP.

BlueBananas · 21/05/2015 22:04
