To think there's someone living in my loft?

On Monday morning when I returned from the school run the back door was wide open, I was a bit un-nerved, shouted hello and checked around, nothing seemed untoward or out of place so I presumed I'd left it open before I went. Fine.
Tuesday we didn't go to school, nothing to report.
Wednesday I closed and locked the back door and looked back at it as I was closing the front door, it was 100% shut and locked with the key in. Get back from the school run and it is wide open again. Now I'm freaked out.
We leave the key in the back door all the time to avoid puppy accidents while we're finding the key, so today just as an experiment I locked the back door and took the key to school with me. It was still shut and locked when I got in.
Now I've just been in the utility room, which is just off the kitchen (where the back door is) and it is part of a single storey extension so has a loft hatch, we've never ever been up there (I always kind of presumed it wasn't a proper loft) and as soon as I walked in I noticed the hatch had moved quite considerably, it was literally the first thing I saw as there is quite a gap around it so it has only happened since around 4pm; the last time I was in there.
The door to the utility room is always shut because the kids aren't allowed in there and I'm the only person in the house

AIBU to think the only logical explanation is that someone has recently moved into my utility room loft?

Can you ou lock utility away from house and make sure there is no escape?

annettec01 · 21/05/2015 21:38

On my god get someone over now! Just to check but would I hell be in the house on my own x

Gilrack · 21/05/2015 21:39

Squirrels that use the back door key, Pip? I know they're surprisingly intelligent but ... Hmm

Rudawakening · 21/05/2015 21:39

I remember as few years ago watching a you tube video of a guys apartment, his food was going missing so he set up a camera thinking it was a rodent. Then camera caught a girl living in his loft space coming out when he went out and sneaking back just as he opened the door.

katemyn · 21/05/2015 21:39

I would be freaking out!! Def get it checked

ScorpioMermaid · 21/05/2015 21:39

Shit. I wouldn't be able to put the kids to bed. I feel sick for you OP.

Donthate · 21/05/2015 21:40

Holy shit. I have just watched Stalker and am imagining all sorts. Run OP.

forpityssake · 21/05/2015 21:40

Ach gwan, open the hatch ??

Zucker · 21/05/2015 21:40

That's some fairly fancy squirrels opening a locked back door with the key!

Get out OP, call someone..... ANYONE! runs about in a blind panic

BlueBananas · 21/05/2015 21:41

Ok I've rang DP and he thinks I'm being hysterical and will be home in about an hour Hmm
So I've got both the sleeping DC and put them in my bed with me and locked the bedroom door
I really hope it's squirrels or a cross dressing DP!

CalleighDoodle · 21/05/2015 21:41

Ex partner trying to shit you up?

SavoyCabbage · 21/05/2015 21:42

An hour!

Pispcina · 21/05/2015 21:42

Ah sorry, should have RTFT Smile

Not squirrels.

AutumnFades · 21/05/2015 21:43

Hiding this thread until I can read it tomorrow when I'm not about to sleep. I'd stay the night in that house about as much as I'd turn down a hit date with Jarvis cocker.

Fairy13 · 21/05/2015 21:43

It couldn't be the cat could it?

luckiestgirlintheworld · 21/05/2015 21:44

Oh gawd. Marking place.

ginagslovechild · 21/05/2015 21:44

Can you hear anything untoward??

mineofuselessinformation · 21/05/2015 21:44

I've never said this before on here, but please call the police. They won't mind if there's nothing to find, and would rather you call than not.
And.... Once you have had it checked, someone needs to go up in the loft space and make sure it's secure

MildDrPepperAddiction · 21/05/2015 21:44

Hope it's nothing op.

On a tangent, what's Luther?

BlueBananas · 21/05/2015 21:47

We don't have a cat, just a puppy who is in her crate when we're not in/in bed
I'm glad I've never seen Luther or Stalker right now

If whoever it is has been living here all week they've had ample opportunity to kill us so we should be safe for an extra hour I reckon
No can hear no noises and haven't heard anything off all week, I was feeling very calm about this until I posted on here ha

MrsFrisbyMouse · 21/05/2015 21:48

it's probably a wind tunnel of some sort and a faulty lock on the back door. Have you left a window open upstairs somewhere?

why on earth would someone camp out in your loft?

I'm pretty sure it will just be case of the wind!

wooldonor · 21/05/2015 21:48

Have you recently moved in, could a previous occupier still have a key, how would someone have got in in the first place and why would they leave the back door open?

Trying to think is logical explanations

murmuration · 21/05/2015 21:48

If he thinks it's nothing, is he going to go up there?

DennyDifferent · 21/05/2015 21:49

I don't have a utility room, no downstairs loft hatch, but I can't stop staring into the kitchen at every little house sound.

I would 101 OP, nothing to loose by calling and maybe you will go to bed with some peace of mind tonight!!

cleanmyhouse · 21/05/2015 21:51

Fuck me. An hour?

If it's squirrels, they're pretty clever.
