..to be driven mental by the purple promo boxes that pop up on MN.

Eg the box tonight that's promoting the Nick Clegg chat or something similar.

It drives me insane and when they repeatedly pop up on my phone as it means I can't see half the screen. I'm forever trying, usually unsuccessfully, to click the tiny little cross to get rid of them and then lo, a few min's later, another one pops up. I end up leaving the site as can't be bothered. It's also happening on the laptop, although doesn't obscure as much of the screen.

Please get them under control MN - if I cross it once I really don't want to see it again!! I thank you...

I hate them. Intrusive pop ups just piss me off and make me feel negatively about whoever is sending them

Stratter5 · 17/03/2015 13:42

Same here, Imperial; I wonder just how many 'interested clicks' were simply users trying to close the damn thing.

TedAndLola · 17/03/2015 13:45

Please don't keep it just for desktop... or if you do it, make it stay closed once it's been closed.

MsFanackerPants · 17/03/2015 13:50

Android phone (Samsung S5) and Chrome. Have also clicked through unintentionally when trying to close it

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/03/2015 14:23

So far 68 people have taken the survey, 66 want the pop-ups gone, 2 neither love nor hate it, and a big, fat zero like it and want it to stay!!

CoffeeToffee · 17/03/2015 14:55

JustineMumnet
We've had lots of feedback from folks that miss things because they forget that webchats are on/happening and would like reminders, and we're just trying to make sure everyone is across the interesting stuff we are doing

Simple solution is that you have a mailing list that people can subscribe too to let them know what's on. That way the user has total control.

Sticky sliders are fairly standard but that doesn't make them any less annoying. Sticky sliders are a LOT more irritating than normal ads.

DrDre · 17/03/2015 15:13

I'm assuming this wasn't tested on a variety of devices / browsers. Case in point why you don't employ testers at your peril! (not saying MNHQ don't employ testers, but this obviously hasn't been adequately tested)

Hellolemonade · 17/03/2015 15:44

"Well loads of people use them - ie click on link rather than closing straight away, so in that sense they appear to be useful/popular, yes."

I've clicked on it many, many times now not once did i INTEND to!!

Using macbook with chrome, android on windows phone and Nexus 7 tablet - pop-ups on each are irritating to different degrees - the phone being worst.

LaChatte · 17/03/2015 16:38

iPad mini OS8, Safari browser, v. v. v. annoying.

Also, when I click on them it is entirely by accident, usually while trying to close the sodding thing.

Pizzadelivery · 17/03/2015 19:32

Ipad safari & chrome
iPhone safari, chrome and mobile

I also may have been a person who showed interest by clicking... I wasn't interested the x is too small and the ad too big. I closed the window each time and went to another website.

Bit like when you dump a good game or app cos the ads are too intrusive.

Also doesn't matter if its advertising nappies, tampons or mumsnet, still a bloody advert!

marriedsingleparenting · 17/03/2015 19:43

Iphone 5 and Safari. YANBU, bloody irritating!

GlitterBelle · 17/03/2015 20:01

Google nexus phone.

I don't find them so bad on iPad and chrome - as it's easier to close them. Think it's the worst on phones.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/03/2015 20:09

There will probably not be a full survey, and if there is, it will not be until after Tech finishes 'tweaking'!

florascotia · 17/03/2015 20:12

Windows 7 PE plus Firefox

As well as the VASTLY IRRITATING purple boxes, I find cookies freezing the site, as well.

I click on a thread, then on an individual message. My browser screen goes blank while lots of cookie notifications whizz across the bottom of the screen. Then one called 'crowd control' comes up in bottom LH corner of the screen, and often the whole site freezes. I have to stop and start again. Frequently, that's just too much bother, so I go away and look at something else completely different.

Do others have similar problems?

CaptainHammer · 17/03/2015 20:14

I've clicked on them quite a lot Justine, but always by accident!! They are really annoying!

Teeb · 17/03/2015 20:30

Hate them. I really think mn you need to look into upgrading your tech team, not just fobbing us off with talk of improvements you're going to be making. It shouldn't take a site of your scale months to carry out tech tasks.

CrabbyTheCrabster · 17/03/2015 21:03

Incredibly fucking annoying and really give me the rage. Admittedly I am very fucking ragey at the moment but still; just fuck the fucking fuck off with your stupid fucking advert boxes! Hmm Do it much more and I will just fuck the fucking fuck off from your site altogether.

I am definitely very full of rage atm. Blush

MinesAPintOfTea · 17/03/2015 21:18

They are low-level irritating on the computer. On the phone, when they turn up I go off to another website because I like having more than 5 lines of text visible. Between the three banners, I only have about 40% of my phone screen visible (maybe 25 works).

SconessMcFloness · 17/03/2015 21:27

Annoying! V annoying!

CommanderShepard · 17/03/2015 21:59

I've tried on Android, Windows Mobile, Windows 7 and 8.1 and Fedora Linux, using Chrome, IE, Firefox, Opera and Konqueror. Same in each browser/OS combo, and it bothers me greatly that I seem to have done more testing than your tech team. I even, for the avoidance of doubt, tested in a text-only browser but funnily enough Mumsnet isn't very functional that way (and the banner text still appears).

What with this and your semi-regular outage the mind boggles to think who you pay for this brand of expertise. Ensuring the banner doesn't reappear by linking it to the browser cookie is not hard. I imagine many MNers could talk them through it if they're having trouble.

darkness · 29/03/2015 16:09

Im just bumping this thread
because I'm just sick of having to click to get rid of the
"Jumpstart your career " purple box

MN ..really - this .....this is your best fix ???

bcareathe · 30/03/2015 16:54

Incredibly annoying. At a minimum, Mumsnet, you need to ensure that after I've clicked the X to make a purple banner go away, you never ever put up the same purple banner, i.e. with the same text on it, again and make me repeat that action. I just had to make the same one go away THREE TIMES in quick succession as it kept reappearing. That's beyond the pale, and it can't possibly be intended behaviour - it has to be a bug, surely.

MamaLazarou · 30/03/2015 16:56

YANBU! By far the most irritating thing about Mumsnet.

JustineMumsnet · 07/04/2015 14:03

Hello all,
We've updated the design a bit - lost the purple, narrowed the width, made the cross button to close bigger. We are also instituting a twitter-style character limit so it will never stretch beyond 3 lines (on a standard iphone 5 width phone). I've attached an image. Hopefully it's functioning properly as well now, so will be much less irritating. Let us know what you think.

..to be driven mental by the purple promo boxes that pop up on MN.
legoqueen · 07/04/2015 15:45

Another who has been driven insane by these & has only clicked on accidentally while trying to get rid...
