..to be driven mental by the purple promo boxes that pop up on MN.

Eg the box tonight that's promoting the Nick Clegg chat or something similar.

It drives me insane and when they repeatedly pop up on my phone as it means I can't see half the screen. I'm forever trying, usually unsuccessfully, to click the tiny little cross to get rid of them and then lo, a few min's later, another one pops up. I end up leaving the site as can't be bothered. It's also happening on the laptop, although doesn't obscure as much of the screen.

Please get them under control MN - if I cross it once I really don't want to see it again!! I thank you...

Laptop and Chrome

I think there are two issues here:

Size/format - on mobile devices, takes up too much space, and x too small too close

Length/frequency of appearance - on all devices. Agree that reminders are useful, but they reappear when you've closed them, and stay on far too long. One brief reminder when you first log on would suffice.

Agree with people above - don't let IT fob you off with a 'it's just some platforms' or 'but people click on them'. They're clicking to get rid of it.

RatOnnaStick · 17/03/2015 12:04

Would it be possible to make them swipe to disappear on the mobile site rather than click? Like mobile Youtube?

Opopanax · 17/03/2015 12:11

I have clicked on those purple boxes, sometimes repeatedly, but never because I actually wanted to. It's always always been because I was trying to close them.

TedAndLola · 17/03/2015 12:18

I'm another one who has clicked on them... by mistake because I missed the little X.

I don't use a tablet or phone, just a desktop where the banner is in the corner, but it's still fecking irritating because it comes back again EVERY TIME I CHANGE PAGE! Not just when I go to a new thread but on every page of every thread. Argh. If I close it I want it to stay closed!!

FenellaFellorick · 17/03/2015 12:18

you'll probably find that the clicks are happening because we're all trying to get rid of the little purple bastard.

CoffeeToffee · 17/03/2015 12:38

I've clicked on them several times but only BY ACCIDENT! The X is way too small to be able to hit easily.

Very, very, very irritating.

I understand that the site needs advertisements but there is no need for the sticky box. It needs to go.

Opopanax · 17/03/2015 12:39

If I close it I want it to stay closed!!

YY to this! I don't mind seeing them once, but more than once is a bit insulting. What, you think I'll change my mind eventually if you just keep asking...?

GoooRooo · 17/03/2015 12:43

I hate them. Does anyone actually do what they ask of you?

BertieBotts · 17/03/2015 12:46

For me it's fine and unobtrusive enough on desktop (and seems to stay away) - Windows 7, Chrome. But it's huge and annoying and hard to close on mobile - Android 4(ish?), standard HTC browser.

The thing is, my phone is slow especially for web browsing. On desktop, if I am interested but want to look later, I can open the ad in a new tab. On the phone, I can't save it for later because opening a new tab is a pain in the arse, plus it tends to load after the rest of the page so it sort of breaks my flow of reading. I'm mid sentence and bang! It appears and pisses me off. On the desktop, it's not covering up any text and loads at about the same time the page does, so it's not so distracting.

grenedeer · 17/03/2015 12:48

Samsung galaxy ace, android.

Ok only 92 people doesn't sound much but there have been other posts about the purple box, and so far NO-ONE has said they like it!

Stratter5 · 17/03/2015 12:50

iPhone 5 and Safari.

I HATE the purple pop up, I never use it, and I do get so pissed off with it sometimes that I just give up.

LulaMayBrown · 17/03/2015 12:50

Yup - I've often clicked on the box but only because the X is so tiny.

Could it have a function where it pops up once but once you have closed it it doesn't pop up again? It's the repetition on each thread that is irritating!

321zerobaby · 17/03/2015 12:52

ipad air and safari.

At the moment I'm on a big screen Mac, a purple box has popped up but easily deleted, and compared to the size of the screen, not quite so annoying (but still a bit annoying).

TheOddity · 17/03/2015 12:55

YES! last couple of days seems particularly intrusive? I have given up on my samsung ace phone and reverted to ipad because I can't even get to the post box on my phone any more and all the boxes are actually crashing my browser Sad

I hate it. So much I'm using the site less the last few days as it's been extremely intrustive. I need ONE popup max. (I'd prefer none at all, but hey...).

Hated on all the following :

I use Windows 8, IE and Firefox.
Windows 7, Firefox.
On tablet and phone iOS, Safari.

Please get rid or reduce to a bare minimum.

And indeed, the fact that this latest one is about Nick Clegg, that's enough to boil my piss.

IrenetheQuaint · 17/03/2015 13:04

Why can't you have the purple box on the desktop but not mobile site? Or if you must have it on the mobile set, set it to shut automatically after 10 seconds. Even if I could close it (which I can't) it would be v annoying to have to click every time.

Sony Ericsson Xperia, Android, default browser

luckylavender · 17/03/2015 13:04

I nearly posted on this yesterday but thought that people would say there was an easy way to get rid. MNHQ - take note!

GinSoakedBitchyPony · 17/03/2015 13:05

Not sure I was clear in my post, but I completely agree with PP.
I do NOT want to have to keep closing it. It's bad enough popping up once, but when I've closed it and then 2 seconds later go to a different thread and it pops up again, that really is irritating as fuck.

BertieBotts · 17/03/2015 13:05

Yes - desktop it's actually useful. I don't MN "properly" on the phone, just quickly to fill time.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 17/03/2015 13:14

I hate them too. I click on active convos, then right click each thread Im interested in to open in a new tab.

Agree that the x is too small and I have inadvertantly clicked on the link by accident a few times, maybe others are doing this too?

Id rather it was got rid of TBH. Im on a laptop using windows 8.1 on google Chrome if that's anything to do with it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/03/2015 13:14

I've created a survey - thread here - to see if we can get some more accurate data on how popular/unpopular these boxes truly are.

HibernoCaledonian · 17/03/2015 13:16

Samsung Galaxy Alpha so Android phone and Firefox. I'm another person who has accidentally clicked on them while trying to hit the X.

I also agree with pp who have said that I do NOT want to have to keep closing it. Once is enough.

Stratter5 · 17/03/2015 13:18

Thanks for starting the survey, SDTG, great idea

ImperialBlether · 17/03/2015 13:21

I've clicked on it several times while trying to click on the X. I'd hate you to think that was me showing an interest! I'd be happy with it appearing just once, as I do like to know what's going on, but once I've read it I want to be able to get rid of it easily.
