..to be driven mental by the purple promo boxes that pop up on MN.

Eg the box tonight that's promoting the Nick Clegg chat or something similar.

It drives me insane and when they repeatedly pop up on my phone as it means I can't see half the screen. I'm forever trying, usually unsuccessfully, to click the tiny little cross to get rid of them and then lo, a few min's later, another one pops up. I end up leaving the site as can't be bothered. It's also happening on the laptop, although doesn't obscure as much of the screen.

Please get them under control MN - if I cross it once I really don't want to see it again!! I thank you...

Morning!

Thanks all for your feedback, we have spoken to Tech and they have asked us if you could tell us what device and browser you are using please?

This will help us to fix the issues - apologies all and thanks in advance.

Ooooooooh · 17/03/2015 10:28

I hate it too. I use an iphone.

Celeriacacaca · 17/03/2015 10:42

Hooray - some action from MN - fantastic. iPhone here and Macbook air.

I hate it too, iphone and laptop on chrome browser. Why can't you just close it once and be done? It's the multiple appearances that get my goat.

CrystalCove · 17/03/2015 10:59

Its an I Phone 5 and browser is Safari.

NeedABumChange · 17/03/2015 11:02

IPad mini on safari not the app!

forago · 17/03/2015 11:07

i use an android phone and google and a windows laptop and google - gets in the way on both!

AtomicDog · 17/03/2015 11:09

Another one saying please get rid. The bar is always across typing box and can't be moved.
I am typing garbage and cannot seebwhat I've typed.
It wintry close for me.
I'm on android with android browser.

HeyheyheyGoodbye · 17/03/2015 11:10

iPhone with Safari and MacBook Air with Chrome here!

V. annoying. I don't mind it the first time but the x is so tiny and even if I click it, the purple thing reappears on every subsequent page! Really irritating.

addictedtosugar · 17/03/2015 11:13

Laptop with chrome and IE (8?)

Think the problem comes because I open active convos, and then open however many conversations I'm interested in as new tabs.
I then get 15 little purple boxes to shut.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/03/2015 11:20

I'm sorry MNHQ - but do we have to let you know what browsers we are using? As far as I have seen, everyone hates these purple pop up promo boxes - I have not seen one single fan of them - so why do we have to have them at all?

Please just ask Tech to axe them, once and for all!

zirca · 17/03/2015 11:35

Samsung and chrome. Hate them.

JustineMumsnet · 17/03/2015 11:41

Hello everyone. Sorry for your woes.

It is fairly standard to have a notifications bar like this and we aren't using it for ads but to let people know about events and useful content. We've had lots of feedback from folks that miss things because they forget that webchats are on/happening and would like reminders, and we're just trying to make sure everyone is across the interesting stuff we are doing.

That said, clearly there are some issues with size, look and functionality particularly with regard to removing sliders and making sure they don't keep showing.

So I think as a first step we need to get all those things sorted - hence request for browsers etc as these problems don't seem to be common to all - before we start talking about ditch the whole thing.

We'll also experiment with some different colours/formats etc to see if we can make it less of a problem for those having them.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

zirca · 17/03/2015 11:43

They are way too large for the text in them and the X is too small to close them. If that helps?

JustineMumsnet · 17/03/2015 11:44

Yes I agree - certainly on mobile it looks that way to me too. We're on it!

@CactusAnnie

I am using a Sony Xperia phone, Chrome browser.

but MNHQ - there are hundreds of posters on this thread all agreeing that they are really annoying.

Lots of us are not using the site because of it .

I don't think that knowing everyone's exact combination of browser and phone will change that.

92 to be precise. But absolutely take your point we are looking at them. Let's see if we can make them less annoying as a first step?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 17/03/2015 11:51

Seriously, JustineMumsnet - does anyone actually like them? What's the use of having something that keeps us updated on interesting things on the site, if it irritates the fuck out of the vast majority of us?

Well loads of people use them - ie click on link rather than closing straight away, so in that sense they appear to be useful/popular, yes.

I do appreciate the idea behind them. But they are very annoying. Maybe if they only came up the first time you came on and you could close them straight away if you aren't interested that would make it less intrusive. It's the fact that they keep coming back that's the biggest issue for me. It's getting to the point where we can't see the content for all the adds and pop ups. If I wanted to be advertised at I'd watch channel 4 instead. Wink

darkandlight · 17/03/2015 11:58

android tablet
android phone
firefox
chrome

all problems

linux desktop firefox browser
still a problem endless popping up...

darkandlight · 17/03/2015 12:01

ah just read this!
didn’t realise you were shooting for fairly standard

DPotter · 17/03/2015 12:01

Hi Justine
I use a standard desk top with Windows 8 and Google.

I don't mind being reminded once but everytime I click on to a new thread I get the b thing again....
I think it could be the posititioning as much as anything else - it's just in my eyeline.
Perhaps the reason so many people appear to be clicking on to it is because they miss the X as it's so tiny
