If you could retrain as anything what would it be?

I'm a PA and a bloody good one (if I do say so myself) - am on mat leave from being PA to a Director... there's some satisfaction in what I do (I manage some projects solo, etc.) but most of my role is frantic last-minute activity for someone else, in office 8am - 6pm and contactable until 10pm (US company)...
I'm just wondering if you could retrain as something else, what would it be??
Money being no object (ha, wouldn't that be nice?!)
I wish I'd taken my degree more seriously (not majored in art history! why???!)
I think I might have enjoyed graphic design... maybe even accountancy...

There are some great and unusual careers I found here occupy me fire scientist anyone?

BreeVDKamp · 05/03/2015 20:19

Wow I'm amazed the amount of people who want to be doctors!! Very worthwhile.

My list of possible careers is:
Tain guide dogs
Beautician
Masseuse
House flipper
Owner of a super cool saloon bar
Potter
Midwife
Own a wedding venue
Party planner

Am currently a sole-trader cake maker! Realistically just want to stick with that and open a shop.

I'm definitely going to advise my kids to think about the lifestyle they want when choosing their careers: want to be outdoors a lot? 9-5 only? Shitloads of money? Lots of time with your family? Etc :) I think that's the way to do it.

If I wasn't a dentist I would love to be a florist.

PilchardPrincess · 05/03/2015 20:28

Astronaut

Roboticist

maggiethemagpie · 05/03/2015 20:28

I'm happy doing the job I do, so wouldn't want to retrain as anything but I wish I'd taken a few years out and applied to be cabin crew or a travel rep when I was younger, I could have seen a bit of the world before settling down and being sensible, now it is too late.

toffeeboffin · 05/03/2015 20:30

I'm another one who really regrets my useless arts degee.

I would have done hard sciences and been either a doctor, or if I didn't make the cut a dietician. Was definitely bright enough.

So wish I'd listened in school!

Keletubbie · 05/03/2015 20:31

I've been a travel writer, food writer, video game reviewer... so far, life is good. Spent my day writing about (and eating) biscuits.

Quite fancy being a dog walker though.

toffeeboffin · 05/03/2015 20:32

Travel/food writer would be good too!

Babynamechange · 05/03/2015 20:33

This thread has cheered me right up!
I'm a pilot ....but would be a doctor in the South Pacific ....

NapoleonsNose · 05/03/2015 20:35

A museum curator, museum learning officer or an archivist. Lots of lovely old stuff to pore over. Got the history degree but not got the money for the masters to train to do any of them. Currently work in admin - v v boring, although I can just about see the sea from my office.

Nocturne123 · 05/03/2015 20:36

For all those who wish for a career in medicine like me or anything else, my brother is currently retraining to be a doctor after qualifying as a solicitor so it's not too late for most if it's just age you're worried about (unless you're 60)

LoveVintage · 05/03/2015 20:42

Provencal that is an epic career choice.

I'd like to be a florist or an interior designer but would only be able to design things I liked so bit limiting.

AwakeCantSleep · 05/03/2015 20:46

Architect.

(I'm a research academic in a social science discipline.)

Julietee · 05/03/2015 20:46

Professional dominatrix. Or carpenter. I like working with my hands.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 05/03/2015 20:47

I would retrain as an anaesthetist. There is one here on MN that I know of. I'm very Envy at her career.

I wanted to be in the SAS when I was about 10. "Who Dares Wins", which I shouldn't have been watching, was my favourite film.

blendedfamilygrinch · 05/03/2015 20:48

Architect here too.
Though I can't draw & have rubbish spatial awareness...

ThatBloodyWoman · 05/03/2015 20:49

I love law,but I think it'd lose its appeal if I did it day in day out.
I think nursing would be my choice.

trixymalixy · 05/03/2015 20:49

I wish I'd studied dentistry at university. i seriously reconsidered going back to uni to study it, but then was offered a job as a trainee actuary. i do enjoy my job, but sometimes wonder what if I'd made a different decision.

morningtoncrescent62 · 05/03/2015 20:53

Wish I'd done engineering - but when I was at school no-one would have dreamed of it as a career for a girl. Not at my school anyway! When the Chilean miners were rescued a few years ago I couldn't stop thinking about the team who'd designed and built the extraordinary machine that got them out of what would have been their tomb, and just thinking, wow, imagine knowing you'd had a hand in that.

If I can't be an engineer I wouldn't mind being the conductor of a world-famous orchestra. I'm not generally of a flag-waving tendency, but I think it would be fun to conduct the last night of the Proms so I'd make an exception for that.

LaLaLaaaa · 05/03/2015 20:56

I uses to be a zoo keeper and now work in animal welfare. It's nice to see so many people wanting to do it but it's really hard work for very little pay/thanks. Zoo keeping is a lot of washing windows and sweeping. It's great but you have to be prepared to work in rain, wind and snow and it can be depressing seeing the animals cooped up for public entertainment, albeit it is educational.

If money no object I'd go back out to work with animals in the wild in conservation projects. Amazing experiences but you don't make money very often so you have to have some behind you.

I would also like to learn to be a horse Physio, but you have to be a human Physio first and I don't like people very much!!

lyrasdaemo · 05/03/2015 20:57

GrinShowjumper or jockey

Olivo · 05/03/2015 20:58

I am a teacher but if I could retrain, I would become a midwife.

RockingDuck · 05/03/2015 20:58
