If you could retrain as anything what would it be?

I'm a PA and a bloody good one (if I do say so myself) - am on mat leave from being PA to a Director... there's some satisfaction in what I do (I manage some projects solo, etc.) but most of my role is frantic last-minute activity for someone else, in office 8am - 6pm and contactable until 10pm (US company)...
I'm just wondering if you could retrain as something else, what would it be??
Money being no object (ha, wouldn't that be nice?!)
I wish I'd taken my degree more seriously (not majored in art history! why???!)
I think I might have enjoyed graphic design... maybe even accountancy...

Falconer. Or maybe horse riding instructor. I'm sure I could combine both, as historically, falcons were flown from horseback...

Neurologist. I would have to re-do all my exams as I have no relevant qualifications whatsoever, but it's a fascinating discipline.

(buys lottery ticket)

I'm a bloody good PA too. I very nearly went back to uni straight after my degree to do physiotherapy. Got an offer at the best uni for it, and then completely flunked out of the a level biology I was doing after developing a sudden fear of failure, meaning I didn't get in.

I'm in a better place now, so seriously considering applying again after my maternity leave finishes. I'd also quite like to be a midwife though, I love the idea of working with lots of different people in different settings. Hate the monotony of office work.

Jewellery. Not beaded shit, but Jessica McCormack stuff. I come from a FAMILY of jewellers and watchmakers and it's insane that I didn't go into it. I guess my uncles are just really bad at making money, and I always saw it as a poor career unless you worked for Cartier etc. - I had no idea that an individual could make it big.

I should have studied gemology and gone to work for someone like Sothebys and trained that way.

A detective. I always wanted to be a journalist or a detective and went for the former. I do sometimes wonder if I made the right choice!

We even did a day on my journalism course with a high-profile retired detective, who said I was by far the best sleuth! Gahhh.

This is going to sound weird but I've always secretly wanted to be a dentist. Sadly though I was never very good at science but that's something I would defiantly do if I was capable.

Neurologist - with lots of research. ( Wasn't really possible to do science in the 70's unless you were a boy and did all three. I wanted to do English, French and Biology - had to do History instead)

Or a lawyer - wills and trusts or property

Went in to teaching. Am thinking about retraining - something legal - too old/poor/ bogged down with kids etc to do the full lawyer training but something might be possible.

I love my job but if I had to pick something else, I would choose clinical psychologist or plumber.

silveroldie2 · 05/03/2015 14:20

Retired now but if I could live my life again would love to be a dendrochronologist, if not that then a geologist.

Onethirdamidwife · 05/03/2015 14:20

smileandnod do it!!! I am 40 this year, have 3 kids (youngest 2) and I'm just starting my third year as a student midwife! I love love love it and am sooooo chuffed to have the opportunity to have a job that is sooooo rewarding, satisfying and makes a difference to the families.

I think I would like to be a GP, or a psychotherapist.

I work in an applied science field, but am retraining, but a bit old to start on either of those unfortunately, so it's a compromise retrain.

curlyweasel · 05/03/2015 14:36

Restaurant critic or pest control using birds of prey.

cojmum · 05/03/2015 14:46

I would love to be a town planner. I have a related degree but sadly cannot afford the fees for the MA.

Sloegin2 · 05/03/2015 17:15

A midwife - always wanted to be one.
So after having my children, I did an access course and in 6 months I qualify as a midwife :-D

Nocturne123 · 05/03/2015 17:22

Good for you sloegin! I'm glad there are so many others who'd like to do something else. I'm a sahm to 2 under 2 now but did law before. Wish if just done medicine like the rest of my family... Ah hindsight

FelixFelix · 05/03/2015 17:28

Textile designer. I think about it every day but sadly there's no chance Sad

SmileAndNod · 05/03/2015 17:32

Glad to hear youve done it onethirdamidwife and sloegin But midwifery is sooo hard to get into isn't it? I think I'm too old and I have no idea how the child care would work, not to mention when I would have any peace to study, my children are just too demanding (have had to escape to kitchen to post this!).
In another life, I think I would have been a good midwife. I Already get all the mums at the school gates telling me ask their pregnancy / gynae problems so I obviously must look caring and empathetic at leastGrin

LaurieFairyCake · 05/03/2015 17:34

A pilot

I watched Top Gun yesterday Grin

ephemeralfairy · 05/03/2015 17:39

A funeral director.

Zippidydoodah · 05/03/2015 17:39

Ah I'd love to be a midwife, too, but have just accepted that it won't be possible due to a dp who works away a lot, and 3 kids. No one to look after them when doing night shifts.

CelticPromise · 05/03/2015 17:41

Smile I am retraining as a midwife. At least half of the women on the course have kids and some are in their forties. It's worth looking into Smile

Former lawyer here. Retraining as an occupational therapist and absolutely loving it. Hoping to work in paediatrics when I qualify.

It's never too late to retrain.
