To be peed off with a 3am phone call?!

I probably am but hey ho. DB's wife had a baby at 2am and he rang me at 3am to tell me - texted, then tried my phone, then DH's when I didn't answer (mine was purposely on silent!). I can't get back to sleep and as I have a five month old myself, sleep is now very precious!! We purposely waited til morning to phone people when our baby was born. There's no way I can go back to sleep now and I've only had two hours

I know I'm being a grumpy cow but could he not have waited just a few hours?! I have no idea how I'm going to get through tomorrow with a lively baby. WIBU to thump him when I see him after I've cooed over the baby?!

I think yabu. They are excited. I can remember being a bit gutted when my sister in law said not to bother calling in the night if I had the baby as it felt like she didn't really care. I'm an insomniac (which for me is worse than having a newborn) and I was woken in the night to be told of her baby son meaning I didn't sleep for the rest of the night and I was delighted. However we asked all our closest relatives what they would prefer if the baby came at night. They all said they wanted waking up...except above sister in law.

With a baby though yanbu, I made it very clear to everybody that until my DC started sleeping through it was absolutely never acceptable to call me at night unless someone was actually dying.

At least he called the right number. I got woken at 03:45 because switchboard misread the bloody rota. Grrrrrrr. (Don't worry, I was polite to her...just glad that by the time I could drag some clothes on she rang back to tell me they'd got hold of the right person. Weekends off are a bit rare and precious for this...)

If I didn't have a baby myself I wouldn't have minded. But my sleep is so precious! I am going to be a complete zombie today

It's lovely news and all, and I get they are excited, but surely sending a text was enough? A few hours before calling wouldn't have hurt them, and unless you'd specifically said to call you when the baby arrived no matter the time, then really there was no need to call you at 3am. It's not like you were going to go to the hospital there and then, was it

YANBU! But the neither is your DB. He's excited, understandably, and prob doesn't realise he will very soon with a newborn
I'm up feeding a baby too so I know that sleep deprivation is the worse kind of torture! I'll give you a free pass to say/do and feel pretty much however shitty you want after only 2hours sleep!
My baby was born in the night recently and I didn't ring anyone, except the relatives who were at my house looking after DD1 to let them know we were heading home (at 3am). Nobody needed to know that badly that they would thank me for a middle of the night call. But maybe thats just our families?

My parents once rang me at 11pm as they forgot to wish me happy birthday and they just remembered! I wasn't bothered, they could have rang first thing the next day. I was just drifting off to sleep.

When dd was about 4 days old she slept for 5 hours in a row and I was so unwell with mastitis, a womb infection and anaemia I really could have done with the sleep. Unfortunately an incredibly drunk woman decided it would be a good idea to try and gain access to my building by running into the door over and over again and smashing a brick against it over and over again. And wailing "leeeeet me iiiiiin". For nearly 2 hours. Dd slept through it all. I could have cried. In fact I did cry.

Oh and yanbu.

YANBU I recently had my first baby, born at 4:45am. We only text peopleat first given the hour and waited for people to respond so that we knew they were awake and happy to talk. We were excited too but I still recognised what time of day it was for those outside the labour ward!

My brother on the other hand was the same as yours, called me at about 2:30 in the morning. This was years ago, DN is 8 now - I took the call and was happy to hear the news, but not sure it was necessary to call at that time, especially since I've been there myself now.

God. I had a 2am phone call from my brother to tell me that he and long term girlfriend were engaged! Noone wants a phone call at that hour short of an emergency,but your brother was obviously bubbling over with joy and excitement. Cut him a bit of slack!

Wow! So many YANBUs, that's sad This is the most important and exciting thing that's ever happened to him and he was desperate to share it with you. You should be honoured not maungy.

As I said, normally I would be fine with it. But not when I also have a small baby to look after

I know it's hard when you are tired to think logically, but you will be tired for one day - this is the biggest thing in his life. Have a lazy day where you only look after your baby and eat sandwiches and doze on the sofa, it's really not worth getting uptight about. We all have nights when we don't sleep - this time it's because of something wonderful.

YABU. lack of sleep can do that to you. Make you U I mean so I can understand why you are. But U all the same.

I'm guessing that posting at this time you are not going to get a representative sample of MNers either. They will all be equally grumpy if they are awake at this time.

Why not try and be happy for your DB eh? Rather than thinking about yourself. Have you got a partner? Can you nap in relay today? Come on, you have a new neice or nephew be happy!

YANBU. A text should suffice surely, especially when you have a LO yourself who doesn't sleep through. You have my sympathy OP but you can't really say anything to them. And congrats on the new member to your family!

We have to go out this morning and husband is working this afternoon. I want to cry. I'm so tired. I also have depression and PTSD from my own birth experience so that isn't helping either.

He's excited and wanted to share the news. It's a bit inconsiderate bearing in mind you have a young baby yourself, but he probably was just caught up in the moment.
It's lovely news, 3am phone calls are often quite opposite.
YABU but I appreciate that lack of sleep can make us a bit grumpy!

I would be chuffed to pieces that my brother wanted me to know so desperately. However I would also then tell him to bugger off cos I need to sleep!
