to think that you can't block someone's driveway?

Apologies, it's a parking one!

Just about to go to bed & looked out the front window to see a car parked completely across the dropped curb of our driveway blocking our car in. Not sure when it was parked there, must have been in the last 2 hours. Don't recognise the car, and it's a bit late to go knocking to see if the neighbours do!

DH leaves for work at 5:30am & is worried that if the car will still be there. We had this happen once before, but it was a much smaller car & luckily he managed to manoeuvre through the small gap that was left, but there would be no chance this time.

Would it be unreasonable to report it?

Oooh love a parking thread. No advice though soz just place marking Grin

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 21/10/2014 23:27

Can you not go down and investigate? It may well be a taxi / fast food delivery person / someone just dropping something off. The car may well be gone in the next few minutes.
I would either go investigate - only knock on doors where the lights are on though if you decide to ask neighbours, or wait till the morning and see. If it is still blocking you in at 5am you have no choice but to knock on doors till it is moved or report it.

Icimoi · 21/10/2014 23:27

I believe it is an offence to park across someone's driveway so that you block them in. They may just be there for a short time, e.g. to drop someone off, but if they're still there in, say, half an hour, you probably should report it.

ReallyOTT · 21/10/2014 23:27

Have you checked there's not a note with a number to call left in the car?

puntasticusername · 21/10/2014 23:28

YANBU. It's illegal to block a car in. One would hope that if they've parked that stupidly they aren't planning to stay long, but who knows!

Blink1982 · 21/10/2014 23:28

Its either illegal to block exit or entranve to a drive one of the two, cant remember which though... Sorry!

thenightsky · 21/10/2014 23:31

Have you been out to see if anyone's left a note in it to say where they are. They may think they will be off so early in the morning, nobody will notice or care. Little do they know your DH is away at 5.30am!

ATruthUniversallyAcknowledged · 21/10/2014 23:31

Oooh, a parking thread Grin

Leela5 · 21/10/2014 23:34

YANBU this boils my blood! Marking place coz I love a good parking thread! Grin

I found a 4x4 parked across BOTH my allocated parking spaces in our private car park this morning. Car park comes with our house and backs onto a school so parents use it as their own private pick up and drop off point, even though there are signs up saying it's private. I don't normally care but I wanted to park this morning and the fact that she'd had the cheek to park over both my spaces made me really mad.

Notmeagain1 · 21/10/2014 23:34

If its there in 30 min, i would report it since DP has to leave for work at 530. YANBU otherwise he may not be able to leave on time and be late to work. Hopefully the car will have been moved and that will be the end of it.

Good luck.

Leela5 · 21/10/2014 23:35

I agree with other posters - give it half hour then report it

BackforGood · 21/10/2014 23:37

I agree you shouldn't, but know that people 'can', as I've been blocked in (or more often out) of my drive on many occasion as people seem to thing it's fair game to park over our drive just because we live close to a Drs surgery Confused

Corabell · 21/10/2014 23:37

Take a note of the registration and contact the police if it's still there when your husband gets up - they can contact the owner through the dvla- while you fantasise about crushing their car with a monster truck for blocking you in.

FannyFifer · 21/10/2014 23:38

Set it's alarm off & when the person comes out tell them to shift it.

FishWithABicycle · 21/10/2014 23:38

It's illegal to block someone in, but not illegal to block access into an empty driveway.

However, whilst you would have the legal right to, in the interests of neighborhood harmony I don't think you should go door knocking now to stave off a potential problem at 5.30. There's every chance the car will be gone by then. If it's still there, you'll have to wake up as many households as you need to find the culprit. When you do so make sure you give details of all the other families you had to wake up, to whom they owe an apology

Bragadocia · 21/10/2014 23:38

I think it's illegal to block someone in, but not illegal to park over their driveway if the car isn't in it. But that's only what I've gleaned from other MN parking threads!

LaurieFairyCake · 21/10/2014 23:40

Your DH can just beep his horn at 5.30 am til it's moved - you can't knock on doors at that time

Trust me, everyone looking out will HATE the person scuttling to move the car and NOT your DH

DancingLola · 21/10/2014 23:44

Been out for a check, no note on it. The only house with lights on that I can see is the one rented to students - they have their own driveway which is empty!

Sent DH to get some sleep, I'll give it til 12 before I do anything... If I can stay awake that long!

Phone a tow truck company and have it removed.
You wouldn't have to pay, they would have to pay to get their car back.
They wouldn't do it again!

Mascaramascara1 · 21/10/2014 23:47

I'm another one for the alarm. Go and give it a few hard (non-damaging) thumps and wait for the owner to come out.

Redglitter · 21/10/2014 23:50

Don't phone a tow truck yourself you might very well get the bill. Phone the police. They can try trace the owner if they can't they'll come out and if they agree you can't get out will have the vehicle removed at the other drivers expense

Mouthfulofquiz · 21/10/2014 23:52

I'm almost excited!!!
I put a note on my neighbours van after they kept blocking our parking spAce at night. I must be a bit odd, I actually wanted it to happen again so I could go out for a 'chat'!
This thread is keeping me going during a night feed...

KissMyFatArse · 21/10/2014 23:58

Blatant placemarking!

Mouthfulofquiz · 22/10/2014 00:01

Update please, it's 00:01!! Hahahah

ADishBestEatenCold · 22/10/2014 00:36

It's well after 12. I think OP must have fallen asleep.
