So, I said I'd go to a friend's daughter's christening (just the service) a while a go. No problems there apart from the usual trying to get into Chruch school bollocks. Just picked up the invite to check I'd got the times right for tomorrow and noticed this little beauty. "Please don't wear dark colours, after all, it's not a funeral. Also, you many not wear pink, purple or ivory unless you are the parent, God parent or grandparent".

I already have a purple dress that I was planning to wear. Is this a thing now??? I've never even read a bridezeilla missive saying one may not wear a certain colour!

Good on you

FruVikingessOla · 12/10/2014 15:20

Hehehe, fourcorneredcircle. But please tell us there were other babies being Christened at the same service too!

Bettercallsaul1 · 12/10/2014 15:35

phantomnamechanger - like this one?

Come to the christening of our baby!
But only in red, blue, green or navy.
Come in ivory, purple or pink.
And you'll get neither food nor drink.
Oh sorry! - I forgot that YOU
Are not one of the chosen few!
So you won't be coming to the drink and grub
But all the same, we'd like a sub!
So pin your banknotes (twenties will do)
To anyone wearing a "forbidden" hue!

Well done

MissWing · 12/10/2014 15:53

The poor mother obviously has some idea in her head about what photos she would like of the day. She's so obsessed with this idea she's behaving horribly and no one has had the sense to tell her. If you break the dress code i don't think you will be the only one.

DanyStormborn · 12/10/2014 16:02

Wow what a wierd invite - they don't seem to think their guests are capable of choosing an appropriate outfit?! I just wouldn't wouldn't go, say you didn't feel well. You were only going for the service so won't affect the catering.

DanyStormborn · 12/10/2014 16:03

Sorry just read whole thread - good for you!

Delphiniumsblue · 12/10/2014 17:24

Well done! Glad that others flouted the 'rule' too!

elizabethan.org/sumptuary/who-wears-what.html

None shall wear in his apparel:

<span class="italic">Any silk of the color of purple, cloth of gold tissued, nor fur of sables, but only the King, Queen, King's mother, children, brethren, and sisters, uncles and aunts; and except dukes, marquises, and earls, who may wear the same in doublets, jerkins, linings of cloaks, gowns, and hose; and those of the Garter, purple in mantles only.</span>

Absolutely brilliant! There were no other babies after all. Just little Violet Rose Ivory. Sadly (as you had all provided a number of witty replies) no one questioned my choice of attire - no one asked me to hold the baby though either!

My SIL made all 80 guests to my nieces' christening wear pink, pale pink to be precise. We all matched the flowers and tableware!
What is it with weddings and christeningd that turn people into such bossy pitas?!

Jill2015 · 12/10/2014 21:10

80 guests at a christening

Bunbaker · 12/10/2014 21:12

Did all the guests meet your SIL's demands pop?

Did the men all wear pink as well?

duhgldiuhfdsli · 12/10/2014 21:19

Why did no-one tell her to fuck off?

treesntrees · 12/10/2014 21:50

If the christening will take place during the morning service what are the usual congregation allowed to wear.

giraffescantboogie · 13/10/2014 03:58
