AIBU unreasonable to wear purple anyway? Ridiculous christening invite...

So, I said I'd go to a friend's daughter's christening (just the service) a while a go. No problems there apart from the usual trying to get into Chruch school bollocks. Just picked up the invite to check I'd got the times right for tomorrow and noticed this little beauty. "Please don't wear dark colours, after all, it's not a funeral. Also, you many not wear pink, purple or ivory unless you are the parent, God parent or grandparent".

I already have a purple dress that I was planning to wear. Is this a thing now??? I've never even read a bridezeilla missive saying one may not wear a certain colour!

Do let us know how it goes OP

Wear what you like, whatever colour works for you. Going along with bonkers behaviour like this will only help normalise it and make more people think that this is a reasonable thing to do.

Delphiniumsblue · 12/10/2014 07:03

Bonkers - just wear your purple.

moxon · 12/10/2014 07:24

If you're still dithering, OP, wear the purple today and go and stand at the front of the church with the christening party, exclaiming loudly how honored you feel to have been asked to be a godparent to little Violet Rose Ivory.

I laughed my head off at the term 'baptzilla'.

If it was me I would wear what I wanted and if it was vetoed I would just say I didn't see the instruction.

Black is not off the list. Some lovely Halloween costumes in stores atm.

I love this thread.

At DS1's Christening, his godmother (looking ace) turned to me as the guests for one of the other christenings arrived dressed for Ladies' Day at the races and muttered 'I feel rather underdressed now'. And at one christening - DS1 or 2, I can't remember - there were very fetching tartan themed outfits for the christenee and his siblings.

BlinkAndMiss · 12/10/2014 08:01

Hmm, they sound like the kind of people who will hold it against you for the rest of your life if you don't go. I'd either ring and tell them you're not going, then prepare yourself for a public slagging off at some point the church or I'd go with didactylos' suggestion...

FruVikingessOla · 12/10/2014 08:06

I can't believe that, even though you haven't even been invited to the 'do' afterwards (presumably they're having one?), she's trying to tell people what they should wear to a normal Sunday service - albeit with a christening tacked onto it. And I bet there will be other babies being christened at the service too.

Bettercallsaul1 · 12/10/2014 09:56

This would make me see red. I'd go, and give them black looks.

Nessalina · 12/10/2014 10:16

So what time's the service OP?
Are you going, and more importantly, what are you wearing?! Grin

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 12/10/2014 10:22

Probably too late now to get one of these in your size? Grin

As a regular church goer, I've been to many many baptisms, christenings and dedications over the years. One thing I've noticed is that when it was a non member of the church being baptised the clothing is always way more extravagant . We church going Christians must be a sloppy lot.

Sallyingforth · 12/10/2014 11:40

Exactly Tigger, and I'll bet the family of this baby haven't been inside a church since their elaborately-staged wedding.

NoImaginationUsername · 12/10/2014 11:46

Please, please give a bible as the gift!

Can you get one with a purple coloured cover? Or maybe she would love that?

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 12/10/2014 12:35

Celia, i have a thread in site stuff about that (tried to demonstrate to hq and it didnt do it again!), of you wanna come on over? Grin

Blueandwhitelover · 12/10/2014 12:44

If you actually attend the christening you must report back! I've never heard of such a thing.

oldgrandmama · 12/10/2014 12:55

Laughing so much that I've had to dig out the Tena Lady whatsits ... just when I thought my age-related stress incontinence was under control.

confuddledDOTcom · 12/10/2014 12:59

Agree Tigger. I've not been to church for awhile now for various reasons but I don't dress up for church, when my children were dedicated (we don't do christening, which amazingly upsets none Church going family members Hmm I have no intention of christening my children which is totally unscriptual and against our beliefs as Christians to appease people who aren't even Christian or the godparent who has a shelf of gods to pay to to cover all bases) we dressed up but not mini-wedding style and I do dress up a little more than usual if I'm going to someone else's, you can tell the people who are going to church for a rare occasion though.

op, purple is my favourite colour so I say wear it Grin I'm the sort who'd wear anything that was banned though, I'd probably go exclusively in black and purple tbf Grin
