looking at these pictures he could be her dad but are the Press banging on about the 16 year age difference? Er no. You don't think it's because he's a man, do you? If a woman of 53 was marrying a 36 year old man, she'd be labelled a cougar and he'd be a toyboy but Amal isn't being called a toy girl!

Yep, look at Madonna, Sam Taylor-Wood. When it's a massive age difference and he's loaded, the most extreme it gets is "sugar daddy". Bradley Cooper is much older than his GF and there is rarely a comment.

Michael Douglas is another who looks like his spouse's parent but the Press are much too tactful to ever mention it whereas Madonna gets ridiculed for her choice in younger men!

I don't think he looks old enough to be her dad. She's one of those women that looks 45 now and will probably look 45 when she's 65. Age gaps between a couple who are past their twenties aren't really that noteworthy, although I agree the press, esp. The Mail would make a huge deal if she was 53 and he was 36.

Sam Taylor Wood and her partner I found quite weird as they have a 24 year gap and got together when he was only 19.

I don't think there is much of an age gap. She's 36, it's not as of she's 19.

To be fair the age difference between Douglas and Zeta-Jones is so large (25 years) that it does get mentioned all the time, and the Taylor-Wood age gap is so big (and he was so young to start with) that it would be eye-opening either way round.

But you have a point that more moderate differences like 15 years get ignored if the man is older and fixated on if the woman is older. And really really large differences like Clint Eastwood's latest marriage (35 years) would be considered freakish for a woman.

I fail to see the problem regarding a 53 year old marrying a 36 year old regardless of the sex of either. It's a non issue. They are both consenting adults.

I don't think 16 years is a big age gap either - my Dad was 38 and my mum 22 when they married, and my 23 year old nephew married a 39 year old woman (who he met online on a gaming forum in case anyone needs any more ammunition) They recently celebrated their fifth anniversary, which is rather more than some of their critics managed....

I think with both Madonna and Sam Taylor Wood the difference is they have daughters who are closer in age with their partners than they are themselves.

People mention the Zeta Jones and Douglas age gap all the time. I don't think that is helped by the fact they share a birthdate...exactly 25 years apart.

Much older woman/much younger man is less usual than much older man/much younger woman though, generally speaking. So of course the Daily Mail is going to pounce on it, it is what they do. Difference must be derided and stamped out.

16 years isn't that big an age gap, but further down the sidebar of shame there is an article about Denise Welch and her 'toyboy husband'. The age gap there is 14 years. I think the OP has a point.
