To wonder why the Press aren't banging on about the age difference between George and Amal?

looking at these pictures he could be her dad but are the Press banging on about the 16 year age difference? Er no. You don't think it's because he's a man, do you? If a woman of 53 was marrying a 36 year old man, she'd be labelled a cougar and he'd be a toyboy but Amal isn't being called a toy girl!

My arse is she 36. She looks 45. Very lovely and glamorous etc, but still much older than 36.

Still, as long as everyone is a consenting human adult I give not a fig what two people do.

poolomoomon · 13/09/2014 17:03

Oh but they do go on about men with much younger women though. If the man is wealthy then of course the woman is a money grabbing gold digger and if he isn't so wealthy then she clearly has daddy ishoos.

My friend (26) started dating a 56 year old man last year, they're still together and very very happy. Her dad died when she was ten so everyone assumes it's her daddy issues and that's the only reason she's with a man that old. She loves him! Really truly does. Thirty years is a huge age gap but it just doesn't bother them and when I see how happy they are I realise we make way too much of an issue out of age. Her mother won't talk to her btw, completely cut her off for it Hmm.

Agreed that there's definitely a cut off point, so I wouldn't condone an underage girl/boy with an adult OBVIOUSLY. But any adult should be able to date another adult, if it makes them happy then that really is all that matters. The number of years you've been alive really shouldn't affect anything, just as gender or race shouldn't.

squoosh · 13/09/2014 17:06

Michael Caine's wife is 14 years younger than him, I'd no idea they had an age gap. Just because you marry someone older than you doesn't mean you'll end up as their carer, or feeling your lifestyles are completely out of step. There's a chance of course but it's hardly a foregone thing.

CateBlanket · 13/09/2014 17:07

I would so bang him until he didn't know what day of the week it was

What an awful thing to say. Imagine if a man posted something like that about a woman.

I know someone who has worked with Amal. She's apparently a lovely, very bright person and she is 36.

limitedperiodonly · 13/09/2014 17:56

I'm willing to believe Amal is 36. We could chop off a leg and count the rings but that seems too extreme.

But she looks older than 36. She's Lebanese, isn't she?

A friend is Persian and is 30 going on 45. She's looked that age for nearly 10 years. It's convention for fashion and grooming in that part of the world. One day she'll hit 60 and the clock will start winding backwards.

Meanwhile, in my corner of the world, I look in the mirror and imagine I look about 24 - tops. I think I have reverse body dysmorphia. One day I will write the definitive paper on it. I'm just waiting for my hangover to clear.

EggButty · 13/09/2014 17:59

I've been in a relationship with a man 14 years older than me and no one said a thing. I have also been in one with a man 6 or 7 years younger than me and people had plenty to say about that. Why anyone gives a fig, I'm not entirely sure.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 13/09/2014 18:07

What's with all the bitchiness about her looking older than 36? That's what I'd have guessed from those DM photos in the OP.

limitedperiodonly · 13/09/2014 18:25

It's not bitchy Mimsy. She's 36 but she looks about 55.

It's her choice but it seems a bit of a shame to me.

I am 50.

GarlicSeptimus · 13/09/2014 18:28

Alamuddin has a bone structure that could support a skyscraper. She'll look the same until she's 80. She's alarmingly thin, isn't she?!

So is Amal secretly gay too ?

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 13/09/2014 18:29

Well, we'll have to agree to differ on that one, limited! I'm 53 and I share an office with several women in their 30s. She looks much more like them than like me! I'm going by skin etc rather than the way she dresses.

Oodlives · 13/09/2014 18:39

I'm (almost) 36 and dh is 52.
He's not Clooney but I don't think that's a bad thing Wink

CateBlanket · 13/09/2014 21:01

I think Amal looks in her mid 30s. She dresses quite quirkily a lot of the time.

kennyp · 13/09/2014 22:16

i reckon they're (the press) all being nice about it as they're gagging to be the first ones to have the "official" wedding photo to print etc. as it'll be a biggy biggerson (more so than jessica simpson (ha ha). ditto why the press were usually nice to brad and ange (wanted wedding picture)

i couldn't give two hoots either way. it still reminds me of bridget jones/ mark darcy in reverse.

francisdrakehasleprosy · 14/09/2014 13:04

And here I was hoping this thread has revealed the fact that Wills and Kate have decided to name their #2 Amal. Feeling v disappointed now.

Chairthing · 14/09/2014 13:14

YABU. Equality should come from not mentioning these things at all, not subjecting men to the same abuse as women in the press.

My first husband was 21 years older than me, and I was 19 when we met. Age is a number, 15 years at their age is nothing.

Sollers · 14/09/2014 13:32

George is looking a bit old recently, isn't he? He appears to be turning into my old uncle Frank.

however · 14/09/2014 13:41

Hugh Jackman articles almost always contain the age diff between him and Deborra Lee Furness.

Onedropoflove · 14/09/2014 14:33

Hugh is very much like George

Nancy66 · 14/09/2014 21:51

Neither Hugh Jackman or George Clooney are gay.

Def are lots of closet gays in Hollywood but they aren't two of them

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 14/09/2014 22:34

I'm glad you said that, Nancy. I've always thought that if George were to be gay, he'd have come out a long time ago and he certainly wouldn't be working quite so hard at going out with a long procession of beautiful women! He's very liberal in his views, isn't he? Just can't see it sitting well with him to live a lie like that.

However, it is only fair to say that where Mr C is concerned, I am not even one tiny little bit objective!

CateBlanket · 14/09/2014 23:45

Nancy - how do you know?

OP posts:
OldF0ssil · 15/09/2014 00:03

so who are the closet gays?

I am not so convinced gc is gay either to be honest. I think he seems to have integrity. eg, raising awareness on how america's actions impact upon the world, friendships with intelligent people outside of the sleb world......... I find it hard to reconcile that 'integrity' (maybe too strong a word, sanity, decency & self-awareness) with a sustained determination to insist he's straight if he's not. Doesn't quite stack up. Saying that, he's not for me any more than my weary jaded carcass would be for him! :-p

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/09/2014 01:20

I have my suspicions about Tom Cruise. I think it is an open secret that John Travolta is gay.

I think Rihanna is bisexual, if not a lesbian (appreciate she isn't strictly a Hollywood star).
