firstchoice \i'm so angry for your son.

I decided when I reached adulthood (probably about 23 in my case that all "isms" are to be trusted.

"Civic" nationalism does not wash with me.

ffallada

I hope it DOES get better.
If the vote is Yes, then surely the old 'English bogeyman' stuff should die out - Scotland will stand (or fall) on it's own two feet.

BUT - if a whole stink of anti Englishness has been let out by a vote, what will happen if the vote goes Yes? - the licence to bully the English will be official then.

If the vote is No, however, I can see it getting a LOT worse, at least in the short term. I don't think many Yes supporters will be happy to hand over the responsibility to WM and forget about it Sad

Are there any figures I wonder for what happened in the aftermath of last time (1970's)???

BardarbungaBardarbing · 09/09/2014 10:51

Thing is I have ignored the anti-English stuff and excuse it as a small-minded minority but I think in doing so I've been ducking my duty really.

My son has been told his parents are "E**sh cunts" by a pal with perfect middle class credentials - it is tragic.Sad

hambo · 09/09/2014 10:52

I was accused of 'Stockholm Syndrome' because I am voting no. My mother is English, my grandparents are English and Welsh. It is a disgusting analogy and actually made me cry. Is my mother my father's oppressor?

(and this was from a 'friend' on facebook.)

AnnieHoo · 09/09/2014 10:52

Sorry that was unfair of me plonking in an Albert Einstein quote there.

I think he's referring to Nationalism being infantile when it goes bad and is directed outward to make another group inferior.

WildThong · 09/09/2014 10:52

Agree with itsall
You should make sure you record and follow up on every incident because it is really not acceptable. It is such a shame that a few bigots on either side bring both sides down :-(

Thankfully I haven't heard of any anti-Scottish racism, I despise behaviour like that.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 09/09/2014 10:53

I should have said I've excused it over the last 25 years (and I should say it hasn't been too common for me - More getting the beady eye for my accent iyswim!)

I won't be challenging anyone for the next wee while!

prettybird · 09/09/2014 10:54

Had some interesting discussions last night when I was at the velodrome (ds at 2 hour coaching session - so the parents have time to do a lot of yabbing! Grin)

A couple of the guys (one accountant, one businessman, medium sized enterprise) surprised me by volunteering that they were both Yes. The businessman made the comment that he thought that there were lots of closet YES voters Shock - the opposite of what has been implied on these threads Hmm.

His prediction was 60/40 Yes. The other guy's was 51/49.

What's fascinating is how many people are discussing it and staying friends Grin. A few of the other parents (who I already knew were Yes voters) said they're now bored by the whole thing and just want to vote. Their view was that people have already made up their minds and there isn't any point in further attempts to persuade either way - again, going by these threads (and others on MN) - not something I'm sure I agree with.

Just for a bit of balance

It really is a small minority of knuckle-draggers. If it were widespread or an "undercurrent" then surely there would be more reports of it?

I should have said

"all isms are not to be trusted"

  • apologies, it's touching on emotive issues and I have dreadful typing.

Like I say ItsAll I choose to ignore it and think of it as the other person's problem, as in they have an axe to grind.

I recognise what firstchoice is experiencing although it is further along the scale.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 09/09/2014 10:59

Thanks for sharing the hate ItsAll.Hmm

AnnieHoo · 09/09/2014 10:59

That is frightening Itsall. The ugly face of Nationalism. Infantile!

Itsallgoingtobefine....you can try as hard as you like, but there is more racism and abuse from YES voters than from NO voters in general daily life.

weatherall · 09/09/2014 11:01

the UK economy is a bubble heading for bust

Scotland has this one opportunity to escape or we're going to get dragged into another recession by a WM that cares more about their London houses prices than the well being of the people in Scotland.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/09/2014 11:01

Prettybird the latest TNS poll had 23% still undecided

chocoluvva · 09/09/2014 11:01

take responsibility for ourselves

I think taking responsibility for yourself means acting in a way that considers the effect your actions will have on yourself and other people. Examples that come to mind are not drinking to excess, being tidy in order to have a clean and safe environment; considering the needs of the people around you/in your community/internationally...

I honestly don't think you can say that voting for an independent government for 4.5 million people is anything to do with being a responsible person.

I find that argument meaningless.

BardarbungaBardarbing · 09/09/2014 11:01

Hi weatherall missed you when I was out visiting the real world!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/09/2014 11:02

Itsallgoingtobefine....you can try as hard as you like, but there is more racism and abuse from YES voters than from NO voters in general daily life.

And that statement, I completely disagree with. Have you any evidence for this?
