This is now the fourth thread in six months - which must say something about vaping. Thread 3 & links back are here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1985116-AIBU-to-carry-on-evangalising-about-electronic-cigarettes-Part-3?pg=1

For all new vapers I will again copy Allergic's great summary of what all the terms mean - but don't hesitate to ask anything about vaping

We all started from scratch & know what how very confusing it can be.

No question is to daft to ask - it really can be a minefield but it is a route to no more cigarettes! (nearly 18 months in for me!)

Allergic's great summary:

""A very simple guide for those who have been a bit overwhelmed by all the variety discussed on this thread. Experienced vapers either ignore, or check for errors please!

There can be a trade off to be considered around cost, variety, overall experience and hassle.

The cigalike ones are the simplest to deal with in that you just unscrew one cart & screw in another. These tend to be the type that you can buy at the local market or shopping centre for a comparatively cheap initial purchase, but the carts they use can be very expensive and tend to be limited in flavours/strengths depending on brand. They can be useful in that they are small, look the most like "real" cigs, and are the most hassle-free, but the experience really isn't as good as other methods and the cost is higher.

The next step is to have a battery and disposable tank type system (CE4 in my case) where you buy the different liquids and fill the tank yourself. The batteries last a few months to a year (about the same or a little longer than the cigalikes) and the tanks (clearomisers) last anything from a couple of weeks to a couple of months - this can be extended by cleaning, but the coils inside do eventually pack in. This method is much cheaper and gives a much more satisfying experience, but has the added faff of unscrewing and topping up the tank rather than just chucking the

You can then go further and use tanks that have replaceable wicks & coils, can be stripped down & "serviced" etc. There's also a lot of variety and complexity available in the overall set-up e.g. variable voltage batteries. All these add to the hassle factor but allow the overall experience to be much better fine tuned to suit the vaper. Cost is a moot point here - you will save money using serviceable tanks, but people that get really into this can spend a fair bit on shiney new toys!

When it comes to the "juice" or liquid there's a hell of a lot of different things to consider - nicotine strength, flavour, the balance of "throat hit" vs vapour etc. But basically there are 3 ways to get the right juice which are buy ready made from a big importer (limited options), buy made to order from a smaller supplier (needs to steep for a few days), or buy the makings & mix your own (hassle, mess & steeping). These have been ordered from minimum hassle/maximum price to maximum hassle/minimum cost.

I'm a naturally lazy person and comparatively new to vaping, so I have a battery & disposable tank system, and am currently buying imported juice (Hangsen pineapple and Smartjuice Red tobacco flavour) which I know has steeped plenty while being shipped over and both brands have very good quality control. I will probably go directly to mostly mixing my own once I get a bit more money at the end of the month to buy all the bits & base liquids, though will probably continue buying the Smartjuice tobacco flavour because I like it so much! I doubt I will go down the road of serviceable tanks unless I get a nice glass one eventually."

No thanks Derek, lol.

Shonajoy · 28/03/2014 17:29

I fancied pineapple, does it crack the tank of my MVP Ive just ordered?

Ledare · 28/03/2014 17:30

Shock Very true. It is known!

Allergictoironing · 28/03/2014 17:34

Yet I vape pineapple more than half the time, and though I've just killed an on CE4 it was the coil that went, the shell was fine? I think it depends on the brand of flavourings used, Hangsen doesn't seem to crack tanks.

Just got back from London, for the first time since I've been completely cig free. Oh my gods could I smell the smoke on other people walking past me, it was vile! I feel even more vindicated in my decision to vape rather than smoke Smile

TheFutureMrsB · 28/03/2014 18:02

Hi all, jumping on the Vape wagon about time too my DP has been doing it for nearly a year now and hasn't looked back since but I haven't been able to manage it as the throat hit is just too much for me, so should I be looking to get a VG base rather than a PG base liquid and could any of you lovely bunch of vapers point me in the right direction please? Just looked through DP's collection of juice and they all seem to be PG based :(

Allergictoironing · 28/03/2014 18:12

Have a look at Liberty Flights web site, they do a load of flavours in a range of PG/VG blends including 100% VG.

Also have a think about how you are vaping, as the technique is quite different from smoking. You need to take much slower gentler drags than with a cigarette, and also many tend to take 2-4 drags frequently rather than vape solidly for 5-10 mins then an hour or two gap like you would smoking, sort of levelling out the amount over time. You'll also probably want to drink more at least at first.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 28/03/2014 18:36

Gin They technically didn't, I said I knew the risks and wanted it, I didn't even ask them to replace the tank obviously because I told them it was my own fault which it was, they were just lively and insisted! They don't even list pineapple on their menu, you have to ask for it.

I've used 3 pineapples, other 2 (including hangsen) were fine, this "fucked" the entire tank in less than 2 hours, it was mental. I still have the tank will take a picture later!

Derek I can just see you waiting anxiously on the postman!

TheFutureMrsB · 28/03/2014 18:56

Another question, sorry!

Can you direct me to unflavoured nicotine juice?? for doing my own juices please?

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 28/03/2014 18:58

Basically I thought having used two pineapples already, it would be fine! So wrong and it's a shame as the pink evod was lovely on my twist. :(

Anyhoo, here's the murdered damaged Evod and my lovely new mini protank (and offending pineapple).

TheFutureMrsB · 28/03/2014 18:58

Thanks for the link Allergic, have already looked there and they seem quite expensive compared to the ones I can get in the town centre, not VG based though(or as far as my DP has bought anyway). He's been paying £5.95 for a 30ml bottle.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 28/03/2014 18:59

Mrs I don't have any experience with mixing but was told on here the other night the alchemists cupboard

TheFutureMrsB · 28/03/2014 19:05

Thanks Schro that looks like a good place to start, off to Asda in a mo so will leave this to my DP lol.

Shonajoy · 28/03/2014 19:48

Amazon do zero nicotine, I have an unused bottle of mixed fruits that came with my vaper.

I find myself ordering all sorts of random stuff I don't need because I like parcels. Confused

I am finding this metal mouth piece really weird, it's odd. My pineapple tastes lovely though in it!

TheFutureMrsB · 28/03/2014 20:05

Shona is that the unflavoured one?

Allergictoironing · 28/03/2014 20:06

Future try looking at this place for liquids for mixing. I gave you the Liberty Flights just because I happened to be looking there the other day & noticed that they did the 100% VG thing, & I know not everywhere does.

Though I must admit I do pull myself up sometimes when I find myself thinking "oh gods that's expensive for e-liquid" & remind myself just how much cheaper even the most expensive is than stinky fags!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 28/03/2014 20:23

Evening all Smile

I haven't been around much for a week or so because of work.

Welcome to all the new people on the thread! Massive well done to everyone who's recently made the switch and very good luck to all those who are about to try vaping (waves at lurkers) Flowers

Going back a few pages to catch up ...

Allergic I agree (sort of) with the price of juice v stinky fags but I don't even know if I will use it lol so I need to find a cheap one for me to try so I don't feel so bad if I still get the hurting throat hit and can't use it iyswim.

TheFutureMrsB · 28/03/2014 20:47

Derek I've never tried it. My DP has loads of either fruity ones or minty ones so they are the only ones I've tried so far.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 28/03/2014 20:47

Cantabile, congrats on getting your singing voice back!

Allergic, hope your interview went well.

Buckteeth, I got mouth ulcers from cherry flavours too. I think there's something in it that doesn't agree with me. I actually don't handle any fruit flavours well, try some non-fruit flavours and see if you get on better.

EatShit bloody well done sticking with a flavour you don't like. As soon as you can afford it, get a few different flavours, even things you're not sure about. I have really surprised myself with the flavours I like and those I don't. It's also good to switch around flavours sometimes, if the vaping is not quite doing it for you it can kill the craving. Hope the antibiotics are kicking in now and you're starting to feel better.

You can't go wrong with an innokin. I fell over drunk on Wednesday and my MVP is scuffed to fuck but still works perfectly. They're built like tanks! I'll post a photo tomorrow if I get time.

Everybody please be careful with tank cracking liquids. If you notice any cracking or frosting on the tank, throw it away and any liquid that's in it. You really don't want to be inhaling degraded plastic molecules.

Schro, I got a pyrex drip tip (mouthpiece) from fasttech for my mini protank. If you're using the sort with a removable drip tip it's worth considering. I hated the iclear30 because of the metal drip tip.

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 28/03/2014 20:53

Plenty Think I will order one, it feels like it's hurting my teeth, even though it's no where near. It's the strange cold whistling feeling that's doing it. Confused

YY about tank cracking liquids, I am really glad it just murdered mines straight away instead of a slow melt tbh.
