My mum always did this and often the presents were not what I'd have picked to go in their stockings but it made her happy, they had extra stuff to open and I doubt anyone even remembers what the gifts were now they are teenagers, I know I don't.

My parents were quite hard up when we were little and I know my mum absolutely loved being able to shop for her grandchildren without having to worry.

Just let it go, it really doesn't matter in the great scheme of things.

I've never understood this point of view. The giving of gifts is entirely at the discretion of the giver (IMO). Therefore, who are you to tell your DPs how many presents they will or won't buy?

I would only have a problem if one DC was given significantly more than another DC - but that doesn't seem to be the story here.

YABU. I do a stocking for DS. None of my sisters do stockings for their DCs. We never had stockings growing up (except for the year I decided to hang my dad's socks up on Xmas eve at bedtime - cue panic from totally unprepared parents - I think we got an apple each and a few coins!) - anyway - a few years ago my dad decided to do stockings for the 3 grandchildren. I was a bit put out as I thought DS would be confused. But it's been fine. The children all love it. Dad enjoys it. Well he did then. Slightly harder now there are 10 grandchildren! I've even been known to buy a few bits to add to the stockings he does if I see something.

It's up to them how much they spend and how many they buy. I could sympathise if it was excessive but unless it's hundreds of crap plastic bits of tat then yabvu

I understand where you're coming from- GPs buy our DCs tonnes of crap every birthday and xmas. I've tried suggesting one thing and then money for their savings if they want to give more, but to no avail. I know the GPs enjoy seeing their faces and choosing things for them, but actually 20 quid for their savings twice a year will benefit them a lot more in the long run.

But you would be very unreasonable to tell them off, just smile and be gracious and happy that you have Parents who love your kids and want to spoil them,

I disagree: YANBU. I still twitch when I remember the year that PIL turned up with bags and bags and bags of presents and declared, "Now here are your REALLY GOOD presents". That would be about 7 years ago. Most of the presents were big, flashy and utterly crap, but they took up an enormous amount of space in our tiny house.

They still try to out do Father Christmas even now he is more symbolic than real in our house. Apparently this year they are getting ds2 and 3 a tablet each and ds1 a laptop, reason being so that they can play games and stuff in their rooms. They know full well that the rule in this house is that all internet activity is done in the living room. So they'll be having those over my dead body.

2 years ago they bought them all micro scooters. Great, you'd think, except that they already had a shedful of scooters, and bikes, and skateboards, most of which they ignored in favour of playing football.

Every year I let them have a short list of stuff from the dses' Christmas lists but they rarely stick to it, preferring instead to get them whatever tat they've seen advertised as the "must have" toy in Argos or wherever.
