A remedy made from diluted bits of the Berlin Wall - seriously, that's surely just a test to find out how far they can push it, isn't?

Exexpat: you're right about childhood leukaemia - and I believe no more further treatment is required - a real cure.

Crumbledwalnuts · 15/06/2013 11:56

Ellie:

You are ignoring the fact that many, many tests have been done on homeopathy and it's been found, conclusively, not to work.

A lie.

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/06/2013 12:00

I posted much earlier about how, years ago, I used to nurse young men with testicular cancer. Despite surgery, this was almost always a death sentence. Now, in the vast majority of cases, it is cureable.

Then there's pre-eclampsia
Anaphylaxis
Peptic ulceration

That's just a few off the top off my head.

aladdinsane · 15/06/2013 12:04

Well it does nothing for delusional ideation, actually that's not true, it works a treat at creating delusions

blackcats73 · 15/06/2013 12:05

Modern medicine and medical practises are chuffing ace. My ds1 was born ten Weeks early and survived due to the drugs and equipment as well as the care and scientific knowledge of the staff. He's fine. So although he want cured of his prematurityhe didn't suffer any long term effects of it. Keep your magic water and kind words. He needed specialist drugs and equipment or he'd be dead now.

TimeofChange · 15/06/2013 12:06

I am very grateful that I live in an age when wise old crones and witches are not executed any more.

I'm hoping that some of the posters on here will never have the power to change that, otherwise many of us who do not conform to the modern scientific way of thinking will be in fear of our lives.

Thank you Crumbled Walnuts for your voice of reason.

exexpat · 15/06/2013 12:08

So you finally admit that medicine can cure leukemia?

OK, here's another one (that I had): molar pregnancy/trophoblastic disease - now almost 100% curable.

Do we really need to go through the entire list of formerly fatal diseases which are now survivable? Modern medicine cures things as well as managing them. Homeopathy does nothing.

Badvoc · 15/06/2013 12:10

Not true exexpat...
It provides all the ingredients for very expensive urine :)

scottishmummy · 15/06/2013 12:11

good grief, take that big ole cross off your back.this isn't mainstream attacking wise minority
none of this is wise woman speaketh.in fact it's a lot of illogical refuting of fact
faith is suspension of fact to adhere to an orthodoxy that is unproven.and some of you have too much faith in homeopathy

exexpat · 15/06/2013 12:12

'Wise old crones and witches' were executed when the majority of people actually believed in their powers and therefore feared.

Now we are (mostly) in the age of reason, anyone claiming to have magical powers is mostly ignored, sometimes ridiculed and only prosecuted when they do actual harm (which is usually through convincing people to believe in them).

curlew · 15/06/2013 12:13

"Ellie:

A lie."

Which bit is a lie? That homeopathy has been found not to work, or that you are ignoring that?

scottishmummy · 15/06/2013 12:20

homeopathy doesn't work.there is no substantive evidence base
there is subjective account from folk, but it doesn't stand up to scrutiny
it's tap water with a bit of woo hoo and faux science

exexpat · 15/06/2013 12:26

I think we are about to run out of space on this thread. It's been interesting talking to you all Smile

EllieArroway · 15/06/2013 12:34

I am very grateful that I live in an age when wise old crones and witches are not executed any more

Me too. And I am also grateful to live in an age where people no longer have holes drilled in their heads to relieve headaches, have their arteries cut for blood letting or have physicians who consult astrology to figure out how to cure their patients.

Know why we don't have all of that crap anymore?

SCIENCE & MODERN MEDICINE.

Before these things existed, your children stood a 50% chance of dying before their 5th birthday - which you would possibly not be around to see anyway since your chance of dying in childbirth was so high.

....otherwise many of us who do not conform to the modern scientific way of thinking will be in fear of our lives

It's bizarre that so many people are impressed by their own ignorance. Bizarre and sad.

EllieArroway · 15/06/2013 12:37

One of my favourite threads ever.

Wonder if shaken up tap water would have saved any of these people?

exexpat · 15/06/2013 12:42

I think a persecution complex is a common symptom of delusions of grandeur...

Can I just reassure any homeopaths on the thread that I have no wish to do them any harm, though I might be tempted to force them to take a dangerous overdose of their own medicine and see what happens (nothing).

scottishmummy · 15/06/2013 12:44

why does homeopathy minick the routines and practices of medicine?
such as consultations,white coats,clinics,treatment of illness,prescription
it is to add an illusion of authenticity that homeopathy lacks.

EllieArroway · 15/06/2013 12:52

it is to add an illusion of authenticity that homeopathy lacks

Exactly!

Crumbledwalnuts · 15/06/2013 13:35

Homeopathy does nothing.

A lie.

In fact it's a lot of illogical refuting of fact

A lie

Which bit is a lie? That homeopathy has been found not to work, or that you are ignoring that?

A lie that I ignore it. Homeopathy doesn't work in the way it says: it doesn't mean it does nothing, or does not help some people, or indeed that people should be so frightened of it that they resort to lying.

Crumbledwalnuts · 15/06/2013 13:36

Before these things existed, your children stood a 50% chance of dying before their 5th birthday - which you would possibly not be around to see anyway since your chance of dying in childbirth was so high.

Please don't credit modern medicine with most of this improvement. Credit clean water, sanitation - on death in childbirth credit the man who made the simple recommendation that midwives wash their hands before helping with a birth - a man ridiculed and rejected by the medical establishment of the time.

Crumbledwalnuts · 15/06/2013 13:37

Exepat: persecution complex? You mean revolting names haven't been called on this thread? Abuse, insults, goading, none of that happened? It would be delusional to suggest such a thing.

EllieArroway · 15/06/2013 13:44

Please don't credit modern medicine with most of this improvement

Haemorrhage caused most maternal deaths - that has nothing to do with having clean hands. A midwife with clean hands can do nothing about that, or eclampsia or a stuck/breech baby etc.

And yes - some scientific ideas were ridiculed when they were first proposed. BB theory, evolution - most things actually. But do you know what changes (intelligent, rational) people's minds? Evidence.

You, of course, wouldn't understand evidence if it sat up and snogged you.

babyhammock · 15/06/2013 13:45

OK let me put my fire proof suit on.
I know of two couples who were trying to conceive (not related/don't know each other) who both spent an awful lot on IVF which didn't work, gave up with IVF, then tried homeopathy. Both got pregnant not long after. Was it homeopathy? Who knows, but I certainly have an open mind.

There's a ton of stuff science can't explain. You only have to start delving into quantum physics to see that and after all everything boils down to energy.
And Crumbled so sorry you're getting such a hard time :(

edam · 15/06/2013 13:46

I had a friend who was a homeopath. She wanted to help people. She studied three years part-time for a degree, which included anatomy, physiology and so on. She was great. Sadly she was injured in an horrific car accident and left disabled and also unable to cope with other people's emotions so had to give up.
