Is Xenia being ironic?
Does she know any working class men? I mean, ones who don't live in 1962?
Things have moved on love. Even in the darkest North. The men here even take the dishes out of the sink before they piss in it. now

Mintyy · 07/11/2012 19:57

Oh fgs, just ignore Xenia. She is mumsnet's longest-serving trill.

I've just made my DP watch this twice! He's an intelligent, wonderful man who doesn't believe in stereotypes (other than actually having the baby and BFing!!!) and he's currently washing up Grin

DP thinks it's a clever tongue poke at Iceland. He thinks it shows his mother at Christmas when he was a child and that it's more geared at the being ironic and showing the perfectionist mummy rather than being realistic. He's not offended by prat husband. He thinks it's supposed to be funny he's not offended (and nor am I Angry ) but the day DP is sitting on his arse like that and asks "what's for tea love?" There's bigger problems!!!

Xenia · 07/11/2012 20:08

I will stop now as I need to get a documento ut.

He says he is "stood in front of".. or course he's working class if he says that rather than "I am standing in front of"
He says hi rather than hello.. ugh

"Decision took at the back end of last week."

He keeps saying "you know".He could do with a bit of coaching in speaking.

Interestingly that he is one of the few super market leaders without their pay available but probably I suspect about £4m a year.

"Some of the learning for us... " ugh the type of English used is awful. Might of course might well go down well with Asda. I hate the way they call other workers colleagues. They are the workers or employees.

It's a massive long apology video so quite interestnig - the GMB union had gone to leave advice about this working on a bank holiday in December back in 2009.

"Great ASDA piece of learning" - dreadful management speak.

I just watched the Asda advert and thought it was good!
It's showing 'Look what we do' Women everywhere get on with all this, arn't we great! (Appart from in our house when there is a role reversal about fantastic cooking And I am a brilliant gift wrapper!)
I think that after the camera has zoomed out and the man has just asked whats for tea, mil gets up saying 'Oh the poor lass has been busy all day, I'll start making some sandwiches and 'grand-daughter' can get the pork pies out'...

He is not middle class. It doesn't matter but it might explain his sexism and that of the advert. I am sure as he is in retail the background he has really helps as mostly he is working with working class people. I have looked at about 9 ASDA videos on youtube about people who work there and not one single one had anyone with received pronunciation. I even looked out for what looked like a woman quite high up in retail. It was 100% regional accents. Very interesting.

If you pick sectors other than retail that is not necessarily so. In fact I felt totally unrepresented. Why does it have videos with black women on but no one like me? Do they want to exclude women like I am from liking ASDA?

LineRunner · 07/11/2012 20:16

How does region = class?

Must be international sexism week or something, I've has a catalogue delivered. Well, 2 in a pack.

Presents For Men
And
Gifts For The Girls

In th men's catalogue, we've got gadgets galore.
In the women's, we've got cushions with animals on them, a vase that folds flat Hmm oh, and there's a pen knife

A pink one.

I wonder what makes a phone charger cradle a man's gift and a fluffy cushion with a puppy on it for 'the girls'

Weird.

OnwardBound · 07/11/2012 20:25

Yes alwaysworriedtoo, that's how it was done in my lower middle class/working class grandparents home.

All the wimmin pitched in and washed up, made sandwiches, etc.

The men sat in front of the television with their beer and talked crap.

It made me full of rage when I was six.

Why would I want it presented to me as an aspirational vision of how Christmas should be by Asda?

MzPixielated · 07/11/2012 20:31

its not just asda loads of big names do it, don't even get me started on cleaning product ads...
surely if we ALL complained something would be done?
i was thinking maybe tweet (@asda) them telling them to get this sexist drivel of my television? AIBU?

RibenaFiend · 07/11/2012 20:31

Mintyy I'm really sorry. Blame it on the yoof but what's a trill please? Blush

HeadlessForHalloween · 07/11/2012 20:33

BooBumpDaddyandMe · 07/11/2012 20:33

YANBU

RibenaFiend · 07/11/2012 20:35

"I just watched the Asda advert and thought it was good!

Yes women are great. But not for single handedly planning and executing Christmas while a dolt of a husband sits back and watches Hmm I hope my family appreciate me for more than that!
