AIBU to be shocked at the school

handing out my 11 year old dd tampons ?
i was really angry .
she knows all about periods and we have a very open relationship ,she has sanitary towels and that is the best option for me and her i believe
im just shocked as to how my little girl would even manage to get a tampon inside her .
the teacher gave it to them and they weren't even in a sex education class.

No I'm not shocked. I used tampons from my first period. They are giving info on the options. You don't have to buy tampons for your dd if you don't want to but they are an averred form of sanitary protection.

The female vagina is very strecthy, even in one so young. My mum, backward over most things, gave me tampons as soon as I started my periods. She will need to use them for swimming or she will be sat on the edge of the pool looking sad while all her friends swim.

Better still, buy her a mooncup Wink

I was given tampons after a period talk in school aged 11. I don't see why you would be shocked, it's good they are considering these things IMO, so YABU.

Well maybe she asked the teacher? Maybe she was caught short and that was all the teacher had.

And its your dd's choice if she wants to use tampons or not, not yours and why wouldnt she be able to get a tampon in?!

It is her body therefore she should decide which works better for her when the time comes. We were given both towels and tampons when we had "the talk" at school

It's a bit odd that you've made the decision for her, why? What's your problem with tampons? And a very weird comment about them fitting inside her! They will just fine! Why shouldn't she have the option?

This is fairly common and has been for a long time. I'm in my 30s and was given tampons in year 7. I've seen it done in year 6 but by a nurse explaining periods. Not sure what the issue is

I used tampons from my second period.

What is the problem, as long as he advised about hygiene and not leaving it in too long.

Periods were made slightly more tolerable for me once i discovered you didn't have to wear what (in those days) was somewhat like a nappy

And yes we had a talk (not sex ed, purely about periods) and were given a selection of lillets, tampax, pads etc at about your dd's age in high school.

All of our Y7s (11 years old) get given a box with a mixture of tampons, towels and liners. Schools get given these by the companies who make sanitary protection. We then keep the spares as you'd be amazed how many girls get caught out without any when they need them.

How can you possibly know what is the best option for her if she hasn't been given a chance to try anything other than towels?

I started when I was 12. On my second period ever I started using tampons, and haven't looked back since. My Mum hardly ever uses tampons, she doesn't like them. But my body is not hers and if she'd tried to tell me what the best option for me was without even letting me try more than one option, I'd have been pretty pissed off with her!

Is it the pack of samples for year7s? Dd's included tampons & pads. Nobody's making her use them & you can obviously discuss your preferences for pads with her. Not all girls are lucky enough to have such open relationships with their patents.

Dd was just a bit taken aback by the size of the pack and was glad she had a capacious bag.

sorry let me clear this up she hasn't started her period yet and she did not ask for them all the girls in her year were given them.

My daughter has been using them since she was 10.

She feels safer & non smelly!
