Is it ok to put the heating on now it's mid September?

I had it on in May. Once in August, and felt guilty.

Is it ok to put it on now? Winter is finally upon us.

well technically winter is not here as tomorrow is the first day of autumn. however it is not a competition so if you are cold and can afford it put it on.

Everyone has a cold in our house, and its dark and gloomy and feels like winter. Oh well. I just put it on anyway.

I'm putting mine on for 1/2 an hour each morning and its enough.

If you are cold you can put the heating on, no matter what the calendar says.

I've had to put my heating on; annoying cos it's so expensive but i started shivering & knew it was time to switch it on when even my extra long-haired fluffy Persian cat started hiding under a blanket...

Btw - the first day of Autumn tomorrow... oh no; thanks for that info :(

crack on, I hate being cold so if i am cold the heating goes on.

I start out at 20°c then as the winter grows bitter it creeps up till the coldest weather mean it all the way up to 35°c

Is it the cost or habit.

growing up my parents had a coal fire, as coal was expensive it was only lit when we had ice on the windows lol.

A bit of both I suppose. In my mind, it should be warmer in the spring months (even though it might not be!) so I can't justify having the heat on, even if I feel cold. I also pay a fixed monthly bill, so it accumulates over the summer when I don't use the gas as much, so I can be in credit for the winter. Works out better like that.

I agree. In our house it is the thremostat not the calendar that decides. Our thermostat is set at 18 degrees so if it falls below that the heating autmatically comes on. If you can afford it I don't see the point in being a martyr to the cold.

I am wavering. I see it as a personal challenge to go as long as I can without putting it on. Not sure how my kids feel about this lol (though of course if they were cold i would...honest).

I frequently make it to November. But It feels really cold this ear. I don't think it IS that cold but because of the lack of much heat earlier in the year I think we all just want to hibernate!!!!!

I really don't understand this thing people have about when they first put the heating on- and it's not just you op it's lots of people. Honestly,who gives a fuck -we live in the UK! I will quite happily put on the heating in July if I'm cold and it doesn't mean that I'm jinxing the weather for the rest of the year.

We're lucky our house is exceptionally well insulated, but my heating won't go on until end of October hopefully, and goes off and of March. I only have it on for an hour in the morning and about five hours in the late afternoon/early evening, it goes off an hour before we go to bed. Other than that I fill in with thermal long johns and tops, and have dug my old ski socks out to keep my feet warm.

It has nothing to do with jinxing the weather and everything to do with reducing my heating bills. I won't truly suffer but if I can put an extra jumper on or a pair of thermals, then that's what I'd rather do.

last november i can remember it being like spring, i had 3/4 lengths sandals and a top on it was that warm.

Well its cold here today and I have put tights on for the first time in months and I thought that was bad enough!!! DH always has the heating on for half an hour in the mornings though!
