Is it ok to put the heating on now it's mid September?

I had it on in May. Once in August, and felt guilty.

Is it ok to put it on now? Winter is finally upon us.

Ours isn't on but it's close, especially as we are feeling the cold after coming back from Spain where it's still 30+ degrees. Can tell autumn is here - the cat decided to sit on my lap for the first time since about April - she is a loner until it's cold!

MamaMimi · 21/09/2012 16:59

KeemaNaan, I'm in Cumbria too and it's not been a great summer again has it? Each year it seems to get more rainy!

Haven't had our heating on yet but dp and I were, just last night, bemoaning the fact that the bed now feels cold when we get in it. Dd1 has been putting her electric blanket on for a while before bed recently and I think we need ours now but we will have to put it on the bed first! Will do it next time I strip the beds for washing. Will put the winter duvet on then too 'cos we're still under the summer duvet at the mo'.

I am also trying to hold out as long as we can before putting the heating on it's just starting to feel a bit cold in the mornings and late evenings now tho' so not sure how long we'll last. Putting on layers of clothes in the meantime but it's not nice when you're warm enough but you're nose is really cold!

Even though we managed to fix the fuel rates for the next 2 winters and pay by direct debit I don't want the payments to go up 'cos they've underestimated how much we'll use. I'd quite like the direct debits to go down 'cos we're using LESS. Smile

I've got jeans, 3 shirts, fingerless gloves, a jacket & scarf on. I just drank a hot cuppa & I'm still shivering a bit. It was about 13 deg. C when I finally put the heating on (yes, I have cracked). Now the lounge is 20 but the hallway is about 15, I guess.

Um, I need to know that the heating system is working fine before the boiler man comes for annual service, right?

lynniep · 21/09/2012 17:02

Out of my hands. My heating is set to go on in the morning if its below 20 degrees (and after 5.30 too). Its being coming on of its own accord for the last few days. I came home on Thursday (do a half day) and I sat there in my coat for a bit, before I thought sod it, I'll put the heating on. Now how do I do that again?...

Melindaaa · 21/09/2012 17:03

Where do you all live?

It's not even cold here in Dorset. I am a wimp with the cold and no way has it been anything remotely close to being even chilly yet.

My twins did the afternoon school run in shorts/tshirt and no shoes or socks today.

CremeEggThief · 21/09/2012 17:04

I made it into November last year, but I can't see that happening this year, as it's since much colder. Hoping to hold out until 1st October.

YANBU, btw.

DeathMetalMum · 21/09/2012 17:09

We have had ours on for around an hour each morning this week as it is just too cold to shower without it on. I am in and out of the house all day with a toddler and have really felt the difference of the hour.

We went and stayed in a static caravan in North Wales last week and had the gas fire on pretty much every second we were in the caravan it was draughty to say the least.

DancehallDaze · 21/09/2012 17:39

"Um, I need to know that the heating system is working fine before the boiler man comes for annual service, right?"

I'd say wrong. I used to struggle to get anyone to come and service ours because they were all swamped with breakdown calls. People putting their heating on for the first time after the summer and finding that something's gone wrong. Now I get the servicing done in the summer when it's quiet.

nappyaddict · 21/09/2012 17:45

I don't like to put it on til 1st November and like to have it off by 1st April.

OhTheConfusion · 21/09/2012 17:49

I have had mine on for almost 3 weeks Blush. In my defence, we live in Scotland and don't have a tumble dryer (it seems to have rained for 6 weeks!)

cheeseandmushroomtoastie · 21/09/2012 17:56

If I'm home alone I will wear slipper socks, and extra layers but if ds is home then I will put it on. This week I have had it on for half an hour in the morning at half five as DH gets ups just before six and its not nice having a shower etc when the house is chilly. It then comes on for half an hour in the evening just to get rid of that chill factor. Extra blankets are coming out this weekend though for the beds and sofas. I like it this time of year when it's not freezing but you can put on your thick chunky cardigans.

TapirBackRider · 21/09/2012 17:56

I've had mine on for the last couple of weeks for a couple of hours during the night. I got in from work last night at 2am, it was 5c. I think that's cold enough to warrant it!

PigletJohn · 21/09/2012 18:00

south coast, not got it on yet, but I think the winter duvets will be going on next week.

CaliforniaLeaving · 21/09/2012 18:03

If I'm still cold with socks and a jumper on, then the heat goes on, I don't care what month it is.

StuntGirl · 21/09/2012 18:06

Our has been on and off all summer. It's on for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night to warm the house through, and then whenever we've got bedding or whatever to dry. We've been doing fluffy slippers, hot drinks and extra layers so far. We just got our bill through and we're still in credit so our bills haven't gone up yet, this time last year they'd gone up to winter prices by now. Am planning on being cheap a bit longer!

thebody · 21/09/2012 18:06

Fire lit, wine chilling, heating just coming on, had a hot bath and in him jams( sad I know) but pure heaven!!

Virgil · 21/09/2012 18:10

Ive just put the heating on but hopefully only for an hour or two. I'm spending tomorrow afternoon winterising the house. We need to finish the loft insulation. I'm digging out the brushed cotton bedding and making some thicker sofa throws since the ones we have are fine for the summer but don't help much in the winter. Think I might make some really cosy ones out of an old quilt.

cheeseandmushroomtoastie · 21/09/2012 18:30

Oh and this is the first year the 13.5 tog duvets didn't come off the bed! Sad

throckenholt · 21/09/2012 18:32

We had a lovely day here in Norfolk today (I could have sworn the forecast was for rain all day). But it had good cold and wet now - am tempted to light the fire - but maybe I should just stick on some socks and a jumper. We haven't had any heating so far.

Jemma47 · 21/09/2012 19:06

The Govt are providing funding for roof insulation up until October - so you might get your loft insulated for nothing - depending on its overall size. Whichever company does it claims their fee from the Govt. Mines just been done for free as its size was small and insignificant...much like the DH

Quiteoldmother · 21/09/2012 19:10

Winter starts after the end of October...don't know how i will survive until then....

lljkk · 21/09/2012 19:22

I'm the other end of Norfolk; we had a high of 13.5 (apparently) & gloomy cloud all day followed by torrential rain.
Enjoying cozy fire as I type. Even DH hasn't moaned at me about the heating being on (atypical).

Bunbaker · 21/09/2012 19:29

"I'm south and it's about 15 in the day and 5 minimum at night at the moment, surely not cold enough for heating!!" 15 degrees is fine if you are moving about all the time, but not if you aren't.

And it isn't that warm round here anyway.

LaurieFairyCake · 21/09/2012 19:40

Im in Hertfordshire and put the wood burner on at 7am cos it was 16.

It's now a lovely and balmy 22. Smile

Teamumizumi · 21/09/2012 19:57

Put it on as otherwise it is rude not to, especially to those who don't have central heating. Is fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff cold.
