I had it on in May. Once in August, and felt guilty.

Is it ok to put it on now? Winter is finally upon us.

Is definately colder than it was last year. We made it till November with no heating. Mine has been on. ESP on rainy days as it just feels damp! Only 15 mins here and there...I throw my dressing gown on top of my clothes. The kids are not in all day, but I work from home so need no be warm. Today it's pretty mild though. All my windows are open!

starfishmummy · 21/09/2012 14:40

Mine is currently on. The time switch has a button for an hours heat, so hoping that might be enough, but I am cold, I can't wear any more clothes - well I could but I wouldn't be able to do anything!

MrsKwazii · 21/09/2012 14:41

I refuse to put the heating on until October because I'm a bit tight I dread the jump in the gas bill. Stick another jumper on and hold the line Wink

Mind you, this time last year it was hot enough to be on the beach right until the first week of October.

SmileItsSunny · 21/09/2012 14:42

I did this morning - it was wonderful! It's off again now, and I have an ice pack on my foot as I just stubbed my toe - brrr!

GoodPhariseeofDerby · 21/09/2012 14:42

It has been really cold and damp feeling around here. We haven't turned on the heater yet, but had the blankets out on the sofa.

NotMostPeople · 21/09/2012 14:43

Mines been on all week cold equal misery in my books.

Casmama · 21/09/2012 14:49

Ah, wasn't thinking about bills as we pay ours by direct debit so it's always the same amount. I suppose if I was used to getting a low bill in summer and autumn then it may bother me slightly

curiousgeorgie · 21/09/2012 14:52

I try to hold out as long as possible by having the footstool coffee table thing full of throws...

But now my DD has a bad cold so I may have to relent!

PatTheHammer · 21/09/2012 14:55

First week of october last year we had a BBQ in my Mum's garden for her birthday.
This year I've heard it is to be a cold autumn and bit of a harsh winter.
I wore tights to work for the first time yesterday. Don't like putting the heating on till end of October at earliest but may have to cave in if it gets much colder.
DC's seem happy at the moment though, not moaning about cold and the house is in the middle of 3 so not many external walls.

sieglinde · 21/09/2012 14:58

You guys must have waaaay more money than we do. I never put ours on till 2 November at the earliest. We don't have gas, and the price of oil is just ridiculous. But don't feel guilty. No, really. Grin

fluffyraggies · 21/09/2012 15:01

Same here casmama.

Mine is currently on. Hanging about at home today and it feels shivery. It's pretty rural here.

Glad to hear it's autumn tomorrow. I can stop being disappointed at the dingy weather and dig out the cozy woolies, tights and boots. i do that look better than the summer one anyway Grin

Inneedofbrandy · 21/09/2012 15:02

I have storage heaters (work of the devil) when there all on its works out £45 PW and you can't just turn them off and on.

I hate being cold but I hate all that m,oney coming out every week. If I had gas it would already be on! Instead I'm making do with throws and dressing gowns.

DancehallDaze · 21/09/2012 15:19

I don't think it's much different from usual - there always seems to be a mix of warm days and chilly days when the seasons turn. I find that once I give in and put the heating on, it tends to stay on regardless. So I try to resist as long as I can. It's surprising how much warmer I feel by just putting on a fleece cardi or jacket. And that costs nowt! :o

Bigwheel · 21/09/2012 15:44

Ours doesn't go on til Halloween and if off by the end of march. Lots of extra blankets and jumpers for us in the meantime.

casmama - even if you pay by direct debit, your bills will be lower overall if you heat for less of the year tho?! i too am in the 'not on before halloween and off during march' camp. although one time, when DD (then aged about 1) had wet through in the night and i changed her quickly in the morning and took her to nursery, i did get a call after an hour to say her body temperature was very low and ask whether i had given her ibuprofen. i think she was on her way to hypothermia. KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 21/09/2012 15:52

We've had it on for most of September. We had a bit of ground frost when I got up this morning.

Cumbria seems to have missed Summer completely. We had spring, a really wet and windy slightly warmer couple of months and are now firmly into autumn.

HereBenson · 21/09/2012 16:15

Put ours on for the first time about half an hour ago. We've done the extra socks, jumpers, blankets etc and the winter duvets went on the beds yesterday. If it's cold, it's cold, whatever the date.

DontmindifIdo · 21/09/2012 16:28

yep, cracked and put the heating on today. It's cold.

WithManyTots · 21/09/2012 16:32

I've just this morning turned our water heater back on in the mornings, been surviving on solar since spring, trying not to put the heating on or light a fire yet though.

Plomino · 21/09/2012 16:37

Yup, caved in yesterday too , and turned it on. Had an oil delivery about a month ago which was nearly £700 , and only turn it on when we really have to , as the heating just drinks it , but it was so cold and wet yesterday , that we cracked . Mind you , the woodburners going on tonight as well , and even the horses have got their coats on as they have to stay out at the moment , and they weren't feeling too warm either . Will probably give them a hot dinner tonight as well as us .

TalkinPeace2 · 21/09/2012 16:48

No heating
but the woodburner is lit

KenLeeeeeee · 21/09/2012 16:50

Yup, ours is on. It's brass monkeys otherwise! Wish I could say I lived in the far reaches of Scotland but I'm in the SE Hmm

sandyballs · 21/09/2012 16:54

Where the hell do you all live? I'm south and it's about 15 in the day and 5 minimum at night at the moment, surely not cold enough for heating!! Put some more clothes on. We camped further north last weekend and it wasnt particularly cold.
