I had it on in May. Once in August, and felt guilty.

Is it ok to put it on now? Winter is finally upon us.

aquashiv Do you have real fires on in every room then? If not how do you heat the other rooms if you don't have the central heating on?

Ithinkitsjustme · 24/09/2012 13:16

Have just given in and put the radiators on - but only because I have to dry my washing somehow! DS3 has gone to school in DS2's trousers because his were all wet this morning.

sieglinde · 24/09/2012 18:05

Are you serious, nappy? The answer is that she doesn't. Nor do we. It's all so very very simple. You get up, you have a lovely warm shower, towel dry pretty fast, and get into a lot of clothes.

PeshwariNaan · 24/09/2012 18:29

Our house is always freezing but DH protests so much about the heat (which, granted, is pretty ineffectual when on) I just layer up and hope for the best.

I've convinced DH to finally get a duvet that covers both of us (we're in a full sized bed) and has down inside though, so that should keep us for a bit.

KellyElly · 24/09/2012 18:59

Its always ok to put the heating on when its cold. That's what its for.

Bunbaker · 24/09/2012 19:31

"Its always ok to put the heating on when its cold. That's what its for."

The voice of common sense.

PigletJohn · 24/09/2012 19:52

unless you're one of those people who has to consider the cost of things.

freddiefrog · 24/09/2012 20:01

I've had mine on this week.

We keep the thermostat at 18c so if the temp drops below that it comes on and it's turned itself on a couple of times

Indith · 24/09/2012 21:20

Fire well and truely on in this house now. Still a bit chill in places but the dining room and ds1's room above it are lovely and toasty.

Immersion heater been turned off, unless we get a late hot spell I don't expect the fire will go out apart from for the occasional big de-ash so all hot water now being heated by the fire and the radiators come on too as an added bonus :). By tomorrow night the house should have reached a nice temperature which it will basically keep all winter long so long as we keep the stove on a nice regular slow burn. Very efficient system really, I love it. Mostly. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to bloody well bring coal in and could just flick a switch!

PigletJohn · 25/09/2012 01:02

mine went on last night, and again tonight. Shame as there was plenty of sun this adternoon. I had hoped the mild weather would last until October when I start my new Gas contract.

MrsJohnMurphy · 25/09/2012 01:55

Our stupid thermostat is right by the front door, hence not very reliable, I haven't turned the heating on yet, prefer a blanket of an evening. Then again I'm the type that has the window open in the bedroom even in sub zero temps.

Dp may have turned it on, not sure.

Bunbaker · 25/09/2012 08:03

"Shame as there was plenty of sun this afternoon."

Blimey. Where do you live? Most of the UK suffered an absolute deluge yesterday.

PigletJohn · 25/09/2012 08:14

South coast. It rained heavily Monday morning but the afternoon was very sunny.

Maybe you should move Grin

PigletJohn · 25/09/2012 08:23

...and it's very sunny again now.

I cracked and turned it on last night and this morning. DS was cold this morning and I have an oil filled radiator in his room to keep him warm. Oil tank is pretty low though, so have to ask my sister to get bring DH to pick up a couple of emergency barrels of oil to keep us going.

Indith · 25/09/2012 11:46

Humph well having said my fire was now on for the winter it had gone out overnight which it shouldn't have done. I relit and the room filled with smoke. Interesting. Poured a pan of water on the fire, took the throatplate out of the stove and it was full of soot and chucks of brick. Great. Sweep coming back on Thursday. Back to fleeces until then! Hope it was just debris dislodged by all the rain and not anything expensive.

PigletJohn · 25/09/2012 12:59

rain radar see?

sugarice · 25/09/2012 13:42

It's cold here but I'm not putting it on during the day when I'm here alone. I've got a nice warm cardigan on with a mahoosive scarf keeping my neck warm, I may also invest in fingerless gloves tomorrow. Grin

Otheregos · 25/09/2012 13:44

Ours is on now and we lit our open fire for the first time this week...I love it all cosy

nappyaddict · 27/09/2012 11:20

sieglinde Yes I was being serious, why wouldn't I be?

So do you just have one fire? What room is it in? Does the heat spread around the house or does it just stay mostly in that room?

sieglinde · 27/09/2012 12:09

I dunno. Consciousness of income differentials? Grin

We have one fire and one wood burning stove, in different rooms. The fire is really only good if you sit virtually on the hearth. Nothing int he bedrooms or bathrooms except central heating.

It's nice that so many of you can afford to turn the heating on early. I can't, and it's not commonsense to set fire to my money to save putting on an extra jumper and some warm socks.

Bunbaker · 27/09/2012 12:39

Not bitter then are you?

Birdsgottafly · 27/09/2012 13:03

I've put a curtain across the front door and have started using draft excluders, it has made a difference.

Since i started walking as a hobby, i have found that i do not like 'artificial' heat, i would rather put extra layers on.

The downside is that i am always uncomfortable in other people's houses, or they look at me strange because i am still not wearing a coat.

There are times that i have to tell my teens to wrap up in a blanket otherwise i couldn't sit in the living room (or send them to their nans, round the corner).

I do think that your tolerance for cold drops the more time you spend in heated rooms.

PigletJohn · 27/09/2012 14:34

hello Bunbaker

More blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and hot sun here again today. I wished I'd taken my dark glasses when I was on the beach earlier.

hahahahaha!
