Am I one of the only people to think that the ubiquitous

ballet pumps and skinny jeans just look crap on loads people.

I'm not the most fashionable person so I may be being unreasonable but I just don't understand why so many people think the combo is so good. To me they seem unflattering if your legs are not straight up and down and you are not tall. I mean if a girl has any sort of calf muscle it's accentuated massively by the tightness of the jeans and the flatness of the shoe.
Why are they so popular?

I hate flats and skinny jeans together on myself they make my feet look huge big.

TheProvincialLady · 11/09/2012 17:34

They look crap on most people really. If someone is tall and willowy it can be a good look (bit dated by now though, surely?), or if generally slim and with good legs and smallish feet. But on most people, it accentuates calf muscle as you say, and hip baggage, heavy thighs, knock-knees, pigeon toes and bandy legs, all of which are quite common but look fine in more forgiving jeans and with more flattering shoes.

OhTheConfusion · 11/09/2012 17:34

YANBU, it is like any 'fashion'... works best on a model.

Ps. I think this is the first time I have ever seen the word ubiquitous used on MN :-)

tethersend · 11/09/2012 17:37

Even a model would look better in something else.

YANBU.

germyrabbit · 11/09/2012 17:37

ha i've just bought some lovely metallic ballet shoes to wear with skinnies for the first time since i had some in 1985 Grin

still am tall and willowy Wink

fartattack · 11/09/2012 17:38

Interesting that no-one has flamed me, yet, it just seems they are everywhere now. Any age, any place the combo can be seen.

my youngest daughter can just about pull off the look - she is 10 ..... 5'3" , 18"waist - and looks good in skinnies with flats - but she looks GREAT in a tea-dress.

fartattack · 11/09/2012 17:45

Thank god it's not just me. I wear straight cut jeans and a friend suggested I get some "more fashionable skinny ones". I am 5ft 5 and size 12 with inconceivably big calves. I am currently re-evaluating our friendship, my thinking is she doesn't like me much Wink

I actually like the look, even on not super tall and not so slim people.

It is a bit dated now, though.

greenhill · 11/09/2012 17:47

I've never worn ballet pumps, they're too flat for me. I particularly dislike seeing toe cleavage.

But I'm always in skinnies and have been for years. I'm a size 6.

TBH they're more flattering than the sheer leggings and short top combo (I can see their pants even on a grey day, bleurgh).

susiedaisy · 11/09/2012 17:47

YANBU

Goes off to look up the meaning of ubiquitous!

WelshMaenad · 11/09/2012 17:48

I wear ballet pumps with bootcut jeans, I am a rebel.

Megatron · 11/09/2012 17:50

It's a bit like a uniform now really isn't it. I don't mind it really and I prefer it to leggings and uggs but I'm strictly a bootcut and converse kind of gal so I'm not exactly a fashion expert.

Softlysoftly · 11/09/2012 17:50

Yanbu however to my shame I have the combo on today (jeggings not skinny) I appear to have sunk into the combo while pregnant due to the stretch/foot comfort benefits and can't drag my --fat ass- to the shops to fix the issue.

An ashamed Blush

Love flats (simple, nothing too fancy)
Dislike skinny jeans. And just because you are a size 8/10 doesn't mean suit them.
Yes you know who you are Grin

For the record I am not a size 8/10 but I do look in the mirror before leaving the house.

ErikNorseman · 11/09/2012 17:54

YABU
I think they look good on curvier women too. I like the unashamedness of it. Who says size 14+ should wear bootcuts or whatever. I think there is a bridge too far to this principle (leggings as trousers, hotpants) but in general I think that it's not a bad thing to show some shape even if you aren't skinny and I like wearing my skinnies with ballet flats even though I'm a size 14

MrsKeithRichards · 11/09/2012 17:54

Err... Um... Yanbu

RobinSparkles · 11/09/2012 17:55

I wear ballet flats with skinny jeans.

Shoot me! :o

BurlingtonBertieFromBow · 11/09/2012 17:56

I practically live in skinnies and flats. But I do think they suit me. I'm small and slim. I like to wear with a baggy top. Not exactly cutting edge but I'm comfy in my rut

GetOrfAKAMrsUsainBolt · 11/09/2012 17:56

It is very dated, and can be unflattering.

I like skinny jeans but not ballet shoes, they are ugly and dull.

I think the shapeless tunic and leggings combo (a la white house and fat face) is more ubiquitous.
