Am I one of the only people to think that the ubiquitous

ballet pumps and skinny jeans just look crap on loads people.

I'm not the most fashionable person so I may be being unreasonable but I just don't understand why so many people think the combo is so good. To me they seem unflattering if your legs are not straight up and down and you are not tall. I mean if a girl has any sort of calf muscle it's accentuated massively by the tightness of the jeans and the flatness of the shoe.
Why are they so popular?

The first person to use the word attractive on this thread was you at 18.05.

fartattack · 11/09/2012 18:26

why thank you iloveddaintynuts

It's actually quite apt because I just read M&S alone sold 100,000 pairs last quarter! Ubiquitous!!

I tend to wear skinnies rather than other jeans, I'm size 8.
There's all sorts of shapes of jeans from bootcut to straightleg to boyfriend.
I suit skinnies best.

thepeoplesprincess · 11/09/2012 18:27

I believe your phrasing was they look "crap" on someone "not tall"?

Not heightist at all.

EdgarAllanPond · 11/09/2012 18:27

motherhood has ended the days when i trawled shops for the next in thing,

i am wearing black and pink skate-influenced adidas.

fartattack · 11/09/2012 18:30

Thepeopleprincess

Just because an item of clothing looks crap on someone doesn't make that group of people "unattractive"

I don't suit gel bras because my tits are huge anyhow, that doesn't mean all big titted women are unattractive does it.

Please read my post at 18:15. You're making 1+1 = 5

Arse,

PurpleAndPoppyWearer · 11/09/2012 18:35

The M&S ones (skinnies/jeggings) are brilliant, that's why. They even do them in short leg length for short birds like me.

Shodan · 11/09/2012 18:39

I'm going to be bold and say that they look ok on people of whatever height so long as feet, calves and thighs are all in proportion like.

However, if you are like me and have ludicrously small feet for your height, tiny ankles and rhino thighs then they just make you look like overstuffed chicken legs.

thepeoplesprincess · 11/09/2012 18:39

Just because an item of clothing looks crap on someone doesn't make that group of people "unattractive

It's the simple fact that you are basing whether or not something looks crap on a particular person entirely on their height that's bothering me.

If you're covered with rolls of fat, then yeah, a string bikini won't look conventionally attractive or if you're flat chest then a bustier might be a bit pointless.

But short equals crap? Really?

MarysBeard · 11/09/2012 18:41

I have tree trunk muscley legs and I wear skinny jeans/jeggings & flats. I am a size 14 but pretty toned from going to the gym, and have lost half a stone recently so I feel very confident in them. It took me until I was 25 to accept my muscley legs as they are and realise they are actually quite a good thing and stop trying to waste away so they would be skinny, due to being called thunder thighs as a teenager. Even when I became underweight they were still muscley.

There is no rule to say that they can only be worn by the unmuscled. If you feel good in them, wear them. What am I supposed to do, cover up my legs for life, lest they offend those who prefer the sparrow legged among us?

almapudden · 11/09/2012 18:42

I am tall and slim and I love skinny jeans. I have enormous feet though, so ballet pumps are not my friends :(

MarysBeard · 11/09/2012 18:45

Grr, just read the header again, that bit about accentuating calf muscles really irks me. Why shouldn't calf muscles be accentuated? Something to be proud of not hidden away.

fartattack · 11/09/2012 18:47

Thepeoplesprincess

Short equals crap with this one item of clothing
NOT
Short doesn't mean unattractive and that's all there is to it.

Your conclusion that I stated all short people are unattractive is simply ridiculous.

StormGlass · 11/09/2012 18:49

I think you need very good legs to carry off skinny jeans well. My legs are too fat for them (and frankly I think my fat wobbly legs are more of a problem here than my calf muscles. Toned legs with well defined calf muscles in skinny jeans usually look fine).

But skinny jeans are much more forgiving than leggings.

Lifeissweet · 11/09/2012 18:50

I am an anti-fashion frump. That is because every time the threads start up about what is dated, what is so ubiquitous to have become a cliche, what is unflattering and what people should be wearing I just kind of roll my eyes.

I have never worn: skinny jeans, uggs, Vest tops without a nice cardi to cover the arms, a sleeveless wedding dress (or any wedding dress) or 'mum boots'.

I wear shapes that cover up my arms, legs (horrible calves) bum and thighs, while keeping some sort of shape around the waist so as not to look like a small marquee. That is it. That is the extent of my wardrobe. I don't care if it's out-dated and unfashionable or too common for words. I would look hideous in anything else, so I am doing you all a favour!

but, no. I would never wear skinnies and ballet pumps, but I do know some people who look lovely in them.

doinmummy · 11/09/2012 18:58

I was Trinny and Susanna'd by a lovely , fashionable young lady . She put me in skinny jeans a chiffony type top, blazer and ballet pumps. I was dead chuffed with the look Grin. I'm tall and slim.

ErikNorseman · 11/09/2012 19:00

Yes I'm short and pear shaped but I do have a good pair of legs. They are naturally slim and I look better if I accentuate them with a looser top to hide the belly. Being short and curvy doesn't mean huge heifer legs.

Softlysoftly · 11/09/2012 19:02

peoplesprincess grotesque heifers really?? The only one being offensive on this thread is you peoplesprincess my arse

op have checked wardrobe, also have leggings and shapeless tunic, am fucked! Hair too short for a topknot thankfully.

Am digging out my dusty pre pregnancy heels and if I trip and drop this baby its all your fault.

MammaTJisWearingGold · 11/09/2012 19:02

No skinny jeans for me would have to be at least not obese, surely as I am too cuddly!! I do wear ballet flats, they are comfy and practical.

LapsedPacifist · 11/09/2012 19:11

Lifeisisweet ! Grin Are you my long lost twin?

I find these freds SO dispiriting sometimes. Whatever can a size 18 menopausal 51 year old (who needs orthopaedic inserts in her shoes but ADORES lovely schmutter) do, apart from engage in some form of spectacular self-immolation on the altar of self-loathing?

Should I just build meself a pyre of Vogue magazines, lie back and set fire to my deeply unfashionable pubic hair?

MarysBeard · 11/09/2012 19:18

Can I just ask the fashion police if loads of people are still wearing something, why is it dated? Does anyone actually care about what is or isn't "cool" after the age of 16?

Clothes can only do so much. If people spent less time and money worrying about what they are wearing and more time and money on what is underneath, we'd all be a good deal healthier and look good in almost anything anyway.

TheProvincialLady · 11/09/2012 19:52

I agree MarysBeard. A good bra is so important.

MarysBeard · 11/09/2012 19:54

Quite. I was also thinking about the body under the underwear!

thepeoplesprincess · 11/09/2012 21:13

Lol. Proved my point exactly softly

Say what you like about the midgets apparently, but don't dare offend the fatties.
