ballet pumps and skinny jeans just look crap on loads people.

I'm not the most fashionable person so I may be being unreasonable but I just don't understand why so many people think the combo is so good. To me they seem unflattering if your legs are not straight up and down and you are not tall. I mean if a girl has any sort of calf muscle it's accentuated massively by the tightness of the jeans and the flatness of the shoe.
Why are they so popular?

Can someone please tell me what I should be wearing then?!?!

fartattack · 12/09/2012 07:12

thepeoplesprincess

Saying an item of clothing looks crap on shorter people is NOT in any stretch of the imagination the same as saying "great big fat whales for the grotesque heifers they are"

Surely you get that? I thinking maybe you don't Shock

Haven't read the thread, but I agree. It makes them look like carrots.

fartattack · 12/09/2012 07:16

Thepeoplesprincess

There ARE items of clothing that look better on taller people it's justs a fact. Just as there are items of clothing that look better on people with small boobage, smaller waists, bigger boobage, longer legs, shorter height etc etc.

I have explained this many times on here and you seem to be ignoring it.

Thepeoplesprincess

You have written that it would be pointless for a flat chested person to wear a bustier.....probably true but how is that different from my OP?

I would not accuse you of being flat chest-ist FFS!!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 12/09/2012 07:21

Well as I'm short and a great big fat whale / grotesque heifer then I'm fucked really, aren't I?

MrsKeithRichards · 12/09/2012 07:23

Stop arguing and tell me what I should be wearing!

ifancyashandy · 12/09/2012 07:27

Love skinny jeans. But am 5'8", size 10 with cracking legs. But add flats to the equation & I look like Olive Oyle... Heels all the way. Or broughes. Pointy ones.

NCForNow · 12/09/2012 07:31

Yanbu but I am also hating those heavy black shoes younger women are wearing with bare legs...again..unless they have amazing legs they all look weird!

BeeBee12 · 12/09/2012 07:34

I love leggings and flats much more than skinny jeans as I feel dainty in them, but I do it with long or short tops which isnt liked on here but I love it.

TheTermagantToaster · 12/09/2012 07:35

Fartattack, can I suggest you let go?!

I, like MrsKeithRichards, would like to know what I'm supposed to be wearing.

My wardrobe consists of

Work: dress and tights. One acceptable skirt.

Casual: dresses, shapeless tunics and leggings. I cannot ABIDE tight bands around my waist, as although I'm a pear shape I still carry quite a lot of fat there. I have great legs, long and a good shape and then enormous boat feet :( (properly boat-like, currently and 8.5 and I'm only 5'8"!).

I've tried jeans and trousers in every fit but I look like shite, so I escape back to my comfy tunics and dresses. I am woefully unfashoinable!

TheTermagantToaster · 12/09/2012 07:38

Gwen, I'm thinking of forming a modern day Raggy Dolls club - wanna join?

Sooooo, if you're not at ease with your knobbly knees and your somethings are all wrong,
Stand on your two left feet and join our Raggy Doll song!

baskingseals · 12/09/2012 07:45

op could i ask what you wear?

fartattack · 12/09/2012 07:56

I am very unfashionable, as I have said before, it's merely that someone told me I should become more fashionable and get some "skinny jeans and ballet flats". As I said I am not slim or tall with humongous calves and the combo would look hideous on me.
I wear straight jeans and tops that are long enough to hide my rather large belly.

If I go out I will likely wear smart straight jeans and heels with a top that amply covers my waist and doesn't ride up.

OP posts:
baskingseals · 12/09/2012 08:10

thing is that if you took away my skinny jeans and ballet flats i would be naked.

quite agree that a new look would be nice, the burning question is what to wear?

HiHowAreYou · 12/09/2012 08:19

I'm five foot one and skinnies look good on me. As do wide legged trousers, which guides often say should never be worn by short people. Bootcut, not so much.

I don't think you can ever say "this is the rule". It depends on your overall body shape what suits. Which bits are proportionally bigger or smaller on you. And how they compare to the rest of your body.

RuleBritannia · 12/09/2012 08:23

I wouldn't wear them. They just look cheap and nasty; the sort of clothing for plebeians. Probably available in markets and certainly not in prestigious shops - or are they?

WhyTheBigGoldPaws · 12/09/2012 08:32

I think you'll find you can get very expensive jeans (don't know brands but there are loads) and ballet pumps (eg French Sole) so I'm sure 'prestigious' shops do sell them. I'm assuming your post is tongue in cheek because you sound a bit of an arse if not.

I detest the pressure to care so much about this sort of thing although I do frequent S&B rather a lot, having lost a lot of weight lately skinny jeans are something I can finally wear - now I'm told they are dated! I think I will just resign myself to be sadly out of style in the eyes of MN or as BerlingtonBertie brilliantly put it 'Not exactly cutting edge but I'm comfy in my rut'.

LurkeyLurkerson · 12/09/2012 08:46

I saw a woman in town the other day in skinnies and flats. She was probably about a size 18 and 5"3 (so just a bit shorter and bigger than me)

I thought she looked really good. It was like her outfit said 'this is my shape, it's actually ok' , whereas when I see people (myself included in this) in the bootcut it feels more like 'Ooh, I'm not really big me... Nooo...' (non convincing tone)

She gave me inspiration to put my fat tummy and nice legs in skinny jeans, and be confident.

LesleyPumpshaft · 12/09/2012 08:47

So what sort of shoes are good with skinny jeans? I've been wearing them canvas sneakers from H&M. I don't think ballet pumps are very comfy at all, they stretch loads and the soles are really thin.

Apparently your skinnies tucked into knee highs is now a fashion crime. I used to be 'with it', but now I don't even know what 'it' is anymore. Blush

LurkeyLurkerson · 12/09/2012 08:48

i should add I'm not actually a crazy lady who believes clothes talk to her Grin all my imagination!

Birdsgottafly · 12/09/2012 08:54

If you concern yourself with how others look, as many on here seem to do, you haven't got enough going on in your life, or your head (male or female).

I would rather get involved in changing people's political and personal views than their clothes

Stopping caring about this sort of crap, is one of the pluses of getting older, i have found.

Gone are the days when i suffer from self imposed angst about what i could/should wear and the rules that others would try to impose on me.

Kaloobear · 12/09/2012 09:25

Is it really that dated a look? I'm a slim, average height, hourglass almost-30 year old, and wear high waisted skinnies with flats pretty much daily...I think it looks fine and it's very comfortable and easy to chase a toddler around in...

SomersetONeil · 12/09/2012 09:26

I don't wear ballet flats, because I hate flat shoes unless exercising.

I wear straight/slim cut jeans because I think they're more flattering on me. Parsnip legs give me the dread. I'm tall and slim so that + heels + straights means hopefully I pass the imaginary test. Hmm

aquashiv · 12/09/2012 09:40

Ballet pumps are so flat with little support I always think being the old fart that I am.
However I have seen worse combos three quarter length faded blue jeans tight at the bottom and loose at the top with court shoes was the look back in the day. It suited no one.
