ballet pumps and skinny jeans just look crap on loads people.

I'm not the most fashionable person so I may be being unreasonable but I just don't understand why so many people think the combo is so good. To me they seem unflattering if your legs are not straight up and down and you are not tall. I mean if a girl has any sort of calf muscle it's accentuated massively by the tightness of the jeans and the flatness of the shoe.
Why are they so popular?

YANBU. Skinny jeans look ok on skinny people. Ballet shoes look ok on ballet dancers.

Drives me mad too that everyone is saying it's so 2003 but can't come up with an alternative.

We can't do bootcuts and we can't do skinnies with either flats or boots, what the hell can we wear??

missorinoco · 12/09/2012 19:55

But what top do you wear with your skinny jeans? I bought a pair in the sale, and now have to wear the flipping things til they fall apart, whach they won't cos I'm not sure what to do with them.

I keep teeming them with a tunic style top and knee high boots, but I look like a wannabe with someone else's style. Every time I think about flats with them it rains, maybe it's a sign.

I like my bootcuts or my skinny flares. Never should have bought these skinny jeans. Even if they are now out of fashion, they are still to close to fashion to suit me.

gordyslovesheep · 12/09/2012 19:59

over sized T shirt or vest - and pixie boots

nailak · 12/09/2012 20:01

some people think curves and chunky legs are attractive

cantthinkofadadsname · 12/09/2012 21:10

You don't hear men having these conversations about the clothes they wear. I wonder how the male fashion industry survives. :)

I'm with the OP. but ill go as far as to say that skinny jeans and pumps look dreadful, especially the low rise ones, on all but about 1% of the population. None of this 1% are men/boys, and all of that 1% are around age 13.
They don't accentuate anything, and the muffin top created on all but the prepubescent is fairly unflattering!
Even leggings thick footless tights look better! sometimes
Skinnies show up every imperfection of the leg, and we all have them and a low slung waist cuts your arse in half, making it look bigger.
As for ballet pumps, they have absolutely no support whatsoever, and are about as good for your feet as Ugg Boots aren't!
I'm totally fed up of the 'rolled in glue and run through a smaller persons wardrobe' fashion.
I'm all for looking good, honestly, but before you purchase/leave the house, have a good look in a full length mirror, and have a look at the back view! Twice!
And before anyone calls me fattist, I am fat. I'm not saying fat, or skinny people come to that, can't look good. There are a multitude of styles out there that look good. None of them are skinny jeans!

Wear stuff that suits you, and there are other types of clothing that cover your bottom half that are NOT jeans. There's skirts in a myriad of different styles, trousers in a myriad of different styles. Even in terms of jeans, you have slim cut, skinny cut, boyfriend cut, bootleg, tapered, flares. If you find something that suits you, and looks elegant/stylish, rather than "slavish fashion victim", you can wear it for years.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/09/2012 10:55

^^ that.

Speak for yourself Saggy...

Puppypanic · 13/09/2012 20:04

I'm a size 6 and look pretty ok in skinny jeans. Just as well as i would look utterly crap in big flares or boyfriend jeans, they would completely swamp me.

3monkeys3 · 13/09/2012 20:36

I think the most important thing is that your jeans fit you, regardless of cut/style/height/weight/build - as long as they fit you, you're probably ok. I also think that the most stylish people know what suits them and mainly ignore fashion, except if something suits their existing style - there is nothing worse than looking like you've tried to hard to be fashionable.

Agree with eriknorseman - I am a size 12 (sometimes a 14 on the bottom) and I wear my favourite DKNY skinnies with pride. I have a big ass, small waist and chunky thighs, and wearing bootcuts (which make me feel like a frump and get wet round the hems in the rain) is not going to fool anyone into thinking I look like Kate Moss in the arse area. I like my shape and I think pulling off skinny jeans is 80% attitude and 20% body shape (not size!)
Bottom line is, people tend to look best wearing clothes they like and feel comfortable in. Different strokes and all that!
